Starting with Qapu Khalqi

List #1 – With a little help from our (Nomad) friends (a budget list)

A basic list, with well-armed Link Team and a lot of Orders available.

What would you need for this list:

  • Qapu Khalqi starter set (use Hafza Spitfire to proxy a Hafza Rifle),
  • Djanbazan HMG blister,
  • Algulaciles riflemen blister (unfortunately only the Nomads starter box is left).

The list:

HAFZA Rifle 0 16
HAFZA Rifle 0 16
HAFZA Lieutenant 0 16
DJANBAZAN Sniper 0.5 31
DJANBAZAN HMG 1.5 35
ODALISQUE Spitfire 1 30
HAWWA’ Hacker 0.5 26
ALGUACIL Combi 0 10
ALGUACIL Combi 0 10
ALGUACIL Combi 0 10

200pts, 3,5 SWC

  • The Djanbazan are there to provide you with long-ranged, high-power fire cover, either with HMG or Sniper Rifle depending on situation. While the list lacks a Doctor, the Djanbazan can try to Regenerate if they are wounded. Keep the Hafzas out of harm’s way – they’re there to generate orders and provide the Djanbazan with Link bonuses. Rear area security (within their 16” optimum rifle range) is not a bad idea though. Also, remember that under 8” range, their Light Shotguns will be a godsend.

This Link can be used offensively, but due to Djanbazan 4-2 MOV, it won’t be very quick on their feet!

  • The Odalisque is a quick, lightweight attack model with good firepower. The Hafza can join her (to provide Link bonuses), though they’re safer in the Djan Link in the back. Switching Links would also require you to keep the Odalisque close to the Hafzas.
  • al’Hawwa is your Hacker, so use him to block and / or destroy any targets that are vulnerable to hacking. Or groups of light models, given his ability to Surprise Shot them with his shotgun. Either way, expect to loose him – sadly, the Navy’s Scouts don’t have long life expectancy – and therefore you should make him inflict as much damage before that happens.
  • The Algulaciles are to do classical cheerleader work here, staying somewhere safe and providing you with Orders – but do not hesitate to use them against targets of opportunity.
  • A variant of this list is possible, switching one of the Djanbazan (I’d prefer to keep the HMG) for a Djanbazan Doctor, boosting survivability at the expense of firepower.

The downside of this list is twofold:

  1. Shortage of Specialists – only the al’Hawwa, unless you go for the Djan Doc instead of Djan Sniper. If you decide to keep the sniper but sack the HMG (for a Doc), there’s enough points to make 2 of the Algulaciles into Forward Observers, who are Specialists, too.
  2. There are two models that are going to see the most of action: al’Hawwa and the Odalisque. If you lose both of them, you’d be down to the not-so-mobile Djanbazan/Hafza Link Team, or the Algulaciles, who can be somewhat underpowered.

You miss the combination of Qapu Khalqi starter set, and the Kaplan Box. Sure they are a little bit expansive but they can handle most problems by them self. Form a link of them or just use the engineer or the doc and you have really survivable specialists.

Oh, there’s a whole lot of possible combinations in QK that I’ve skipped here. For two reasons, really.

First, these articles are meant as a way to show beginner players some possible list builds. Not to be comprehensive tactical analysis threads that cover all the possibilities.
Second, please note we’re trying to make the list budget-friendly. Especially on the low points level. A Kaplan list like you’ve suggested requires extra box and blister, to add to the 6 models already in the starter box.

If you want to use a Kaplan Link in your basic QK build, well, more power to you. Kaplans are a good unit and I like them too. But they aren’t the one right build possible, fullstop – they are just one of a huge number of possible (and playable!) QK lists 🙂

Two questions about the Holoprojector L1 with the Hafsa.

    1) After deployment, when you share open information about your models, you only tell your opponent open information about the model he’s disguised as, correct? For instance, if I disguised the Hafsa as a Jannissary, and the opponent asked what it was, I’d say “Jannissary with HMG.”, right?

    2) Do enemy models need to discover the Hafsa before they can shoot at him? Using the above scenario, would it go something like;
Enemy: “Shooting at your Jannissary with HMG.”
Me: “You need to Discover it first!”
    Enemy: “You wot mate?”

    3) If a model with Holoprojector L1 is killed, do I have to reveal that it was, in fact, a Hafsa or do I simply remove the Jannissary model he was disguised as and let him think he killed a Jannissary?

    Thanks!
