Entries 2016 Q1 [Data-Sphere Painting Campaign]

by Claudius Sol » December 30th, 2015, 8:24 pm

Old post
Howdy, once again!

It's a little early, but I figured a belayed holiday gift for everyone would be to spoil the theme of the next painting campaign.

The next theme will be: Speed!

Anything with a MOV value higher than 4-4 will qualify!

Sorry for the rather unkempt appearance of this post. I'll spruce it back up to the quality you expect at a later time. It's been fixed! See below.

Data-Sphere Painting Campaign!
2016 Q1

The goal of this campaign is to paint our models and show off our progress in an attempt to keep a steady and sustainable pace of painting.
Participants (and observers) are encouraged to share Work In Progress (WIP) pictures and divulge their techniques and recipes for their works.
High amounts of detail and creativity are encouraged, but not required for participation.

To enter:
  1. Post in the season's thread with your entry. Both an unpainted (with a timestamp) and finished picture of the entry.

The theme of this season is: Speed!

Requirements:
  1. Must have MOV value higher than 4-4 possible:
  2. Bikes
  3. Authorized Bounty Hunter (by virtue of bike roll)
  4. Morlocks (by virtue of metachemistry)
  5. etc.

That's it! If you have any questions, just ask and I'll try to get back to you within a day or two.

In the case of a partial profile that qualifies, all models of that profile must be submitted. Profiles such as the Scarface and Cordelia of Mercenaries will require both the "Fast" profile model and the "Slow" profile model (such as Cordelia alongside Scarface).

I got a need... A need for speed!

That's it!

At the end of each Season (this one ending on March 31st at 23:59:59 UTC)(NOTE: THIS MEANS THE ENTRY PERIOD IS NOW 3 MONTHS!), no more submissions will be accepted and the season's submissions will be compiled together. The following month, a poll thread will allow users to vote for which models they most like! There is no strict criteria on what you are casting your vote for! What this means is that users can vote on the "Most Improved", "Best Painted", "Most Interesting", "Most Ambitious", "Most Helpful", "Most Friendly", "Most Involved", "Most Funny", etc.! This form of voting doesn't prevent amateur or new painters from taking part. I know I'll always be voting for those that try their hardest. You'll also have multiple votes, so no worrying about which entries to pick! Votes are changeable at any time during the voting month. Voting for this season will end on April 30th at 23:59:59 UTC.

To vote:
  1. View the appropriate thread for the Season that you wish to vote for.
  2. View ALL entries for that month.
  3. Select your vote(s) from the Poll in the thread.

You're done!

Note: it's possible that the number of entries will require multiple poll threads. In this case, please view all threads.

Prizes!
But wait! There's more!

For each season, there will be 3 winners that will be featured.
Second and Third places will receive commemorative patches and feature in a blog post.
First place will receive the same prizes as Second and Third, as well as some Vallejo paints to reward their artistry.

Note to previous season winners: we're still working out the kinks on prize support and how to handle distribution. Sorry for the wait. We appreciate your understanding.

Best of luck!

If you have any questions, post 'em below and I'll respond in the thread.

By higher than 4-4 do you mean any model that has a value higher than four (so for example does 6-2 or 6-4 qualify) or both values higher than four (so 6-6 and above). Or can we define it as any model where the sum of the values are over 8 (so 6-2 would fail but 6-4 would pass).

Also, if a g:synch like an Auxbot (6-4) works does it also need it's handler?

Yes, sorry!

Total MOV value must exceed 8" in a single order.

If the model is only on the board with another model (REMs and Traktor Muls excluded from this) then the owning model must also be painted.

So, for this example, Antipode Assault Pack will require the Handler and at least 1 Antipode.

What with Metachemistry? One of the rolls gives 8-4 MOV (and I have two Morlocks to paint ;) ).

I'll allow Morlocks. (Note: this also allows ABH)

I've also updated the original post!

Things to note to those used to the old format: You now have 3 (THREE!) months for entry submission. The voting period will coincide with the first month of the next season. This gives more time for entries and lets people continue to paint without fear of painting something that would be qualified for the next season!

I'm up for a bit of a challenge. Every now and again I need a reason to spend some extra time of a model and it just so happens I've very recently finished converting this one. So I'm entered.

Hey guys, I'm new on the forum here and just starting Tohaa. I'm looking to keep motivated as I paint up a 300 point force so hopefully this campaign will help. Does a Rasail Boarding Team with G:Sync Chaksa Peripheral count (mov 6-4)?

Wasn't sure if I'm going to take part in this one - it all depended on the Infinity projects I get to paint. Fortunately during last local event I had a chance to talk to other players about gaming and got some advice regarding all of Corregidor units. Two days later a box of Ariadna Dog-Warriors came in and I started converting my own variation of well known character: McMurrough. Not that I dislike the original one - it is really a great miniature, but I just love the badass look of new Ariadna Dog-Warriors. Had to use one of these, especially that it already has two Chain Rifles. It will be painted just as my whole Nomad (Corregidor) army instead of a 'skirt and squirrel' style.

I used a lot of Greenstuff to change suspenders into a backpack harness. I also used a piece of Scar Face's TAG from bootleg series as a backpack - needed something to be painted plain white to keep up with my armie's theme. There's also a cybernetic-eye implant and some small fur adjustments. I hope that local gaming community will not have any objections for this miniature to be used as McMurrough.

Thanks. I had a lot of practice highlighting black while painting Terminator Genizys miniatures as a commission for River Horse - game producer, last december. Tomorrow will probably post a finished miniature.

Just as mentioned earlier - here's the finished miniature. Hope you guys gonna like it - I tried to test some new things on this particular miniature, including some changes to the way I paint Nomad weaponry, and the depth of grey. Also the 'green' elements will become a standard addition to my miniatures as they compliment the colour scheme really well.

No tartan on the shorts? :P

I have to comment: It looks a little... bland, compared to your prior works.

No way - this one is a badass Corregidor version, no way for the skirt & girly stuff.

Claudius Sol wrote:I have to comment: It looks a little... bland, compared to your prior works.

Do you mean in comparison to two special projects presented here, or overall of my Nomads? This one is just another line miniature for my own collection. It looks almost the same as the rest of my Nomads with a difference of shadows and contrast depth. Opposite to the previous Corregidor miniatures I used a lot of dark blends on this miniature to create more agressive contgrast on Red, Grey and Weapons - the inferiors are much darker than I usually do. That may be the reason this miniature has much more shade variety. Red is also altered to behave more like latex shorts than usual armour.

Another reason this one may seem a bit different is the background. Untill now I used gray background which didn't go well with my colour scheme (Mobile Brigadas for example - look so flat and devoid of depth). It was difficult for my camera to set the contrast right. Now I've switched to black/grey background which let me to read colours much more true to the original. One day I will probably re-take all the pictures of my Corregidor'ians using the new background. Actually I'm still learning to take pictures and use different settings/backgrounds. It will take some time before my pictures will represent my miniatures properly :)

I only wish that you be able to see these miniatures in real life and see the colours for yourself :)

No harm done - this guys is way below the level of two previous works. They took some time to accomplish and were meant to be special. This time I just want to participate, no bravado or 'special projects'. Just plain fellow participation as I had a chance with a miniature that was to be painted anyway. I'm also eager to read any comments - both positive and critique. This way I have both fun and learn :)
