Undercoat for Nomads, black or white?

by Ghost80 » July 19th, 2015, 10:37 am

What colour would you suggest to use for painting Nomads as an undercoat? I was planning to use white for Corregidor and Bakunin, because it seems to me that it better fits the Corregidor's red and the Bakunin's white and orange. As for Tunguska, I was planning to use black, since this seems to be their typical colour.
Am I right or are there some exceptions that I miss? One of my friends, for example, has used white for the Alguaciles and black for the Mobile Brigada, but I've always thought that black wasn't good as undercoat for red colour schemes.

Which undercoat do you normally use? Use that one. It's not about colors, it's about painting styles.

What Pierzasty said. I always prefer painting over a light undercoat so used to go with white. Nowadays, with an airbrush, I tend to do a zenith undercoat with the predominant colour as a time-saver. Never too dark though.

Benefit of a black undercoat is that the hard to reach sections and creases are easier to shade. Downside is that some colours (eg red, yellow, white) require many layers.

But yes, you should go with an undercoat that matches your preferred way of painting.

I've also found that if you use a lot of washes it's easier with a light undercoat because the miniature won't look so dark.

But like the others have said it's all about style.

I almost always prime Black -> Grey -> Light Grey. Zenith style.

This lends towards more realistic shadows for me.

I've been undercoating with astronimicon grey. It works well for brighter models...

Of course a lot of it depends on the final colours. For many of my miniatures I use brown as a base.
