In the official forum I have a thread, where I posted more detailed shots. If you need more input, drop me a line.

Hiso is unable to provide a timestamped photo of the unpainted Joan. That said, he has a dated receipt for the book (and miniature). Would anyone be opposed to this counting as his entry? If no one has any issue, then I will allow it.

I don't know if you read french, but, in blue, it is written "book of Giraldez" and the stamp of the store

Is it good for you?

To that sounds perfectly fine :)

I'm gonna deliver some more pics and a new blogpost for my ABH tomorrow. I'm pumped, guys. Thanks for that! :D

ummm i think something went a little awry in my reply (PEBCAK). I am replicating the same airbrush highlighting technique as you are from Angel's book. My comment on my brush work was in relation to not simply washing the miniature as Claudius Sol asked, but painting the shading in with my finest detail brush.
Although there was a little bit of blending using the shade colour on some of the armour plates, i can only dream of being able to blend the entire model to the same level as achieved with the airbrush in the same amount of time.

I think Hydra is correct though, an airbrush is a bit over rated. Although i cannot complain about the speed i can do things with an airbrush. Its probably that benefit alone which allows me to get anything painted!

Tell you guys something though, I am struggling with placement of the highlights on my models. In the last picture i posted my Father Knight on the right has just had the shading applied. The ORC on the left in the image has had shading and then i've started the extreme edge highlighting. But even using metallic objects as a reference i am struggling with putting the highlights where i think they should go.

Kenza your ABH is looking really good, how did you manage to recover the model after the airbrush spluttering incident?

@Claudius Sol, hiso's dated receipt is fine by me.

Splayed,

You just gotta start with the highlight. Pick a part to highlight (I like starting from the top-down), finish the highlight all the way (through multiple shades), then take a step back and see where you think the light is playing from and where else it would play on the model, do another part, then take a step back, repeat until satisfied.

I started doing some highlighting on the Anathematic's plates. We'll see if I can get it all done in the remainder of the month. Slightly blurry due to cell phone camera usage.

Wu Ming updated! I'm not sure if he is done or not - he seems tabletop ready but not exactly wowing anyone, so I'm open to suggestions.

@splayed: D'Oh, had I remembered your previous posts (sorry!), I would have avoided the mistake. Doesn't take away from your mad brush skills, tho. :)

Regarding the use of airbrushes: I sort of agree. I only started using one this year, everything before was done by brush. I still prefer brushwork to using the AB, but I can't ignore the uses of it. Getting base coats done quickly, especially on terrain and large models is a vast timesaver. Doing some quick first basic highlights is also welcome. That doesn't mean that I don't need to add a lot of stuff by brush. In recent years we saw a rise in almost entirely airbrushed models, especially with the larger kits from GW. While this looks good from afar, it unfortunately lacks a lot of detail work. You'll see Riptides, Knights and whatnot with all kinds of fancy pseudo-OSL, that tries to blind you to lacking attention to detail. I'm not a big fan of that. I rather do some basic work with the AB and then dive in and do my favourite thing - painting the mini "by hand" with extra attention to minor details. It's so damn relaxing for me. :D

Btw, the recovery from that airbrush disaster early on could only be salvaged by sparing on that base coat again from below the mini and very carefully from the top.

@all: Thanks for the kind words on the ABH. I'm almost done, I hope you'll like the end result. :)

@Toadchild: Your black armour is looking really good. That's exactly how it should look! I'm keen to see the whole thing finished!

@vorthain: Here's some ideas: Do some more highlighting on the muscle fibers. Use pure white with a tiny dot of your green mixed in and add dots of that almost white colour to the raised areas of the fibers. Also, your white might need some shading. But be carful if you attempt this. Either give it a beige or light grey shade with very very thinned down colours. Right now the white looks too flat compared to the other colours (this is critique on pro-level, though, so don't get me wrong here ;) ). That could do the trick, I think. Also glaze the gun with some sort of reddish brown (some Devlan Mud mixed with something akin to the old scorched brown). It will give it a more used look and add some more colour to it. glazes on different areas for a tinting process can make a mini much more vibrant, I think.

I hope this helps. :)

Yeah, I thought as much. A few years back, every time I took a pic of my minis, lighting and shading steps disappeared in the final picture. It just would not show. For some reason, taking pics with my iPhone fixed that problem. :)

Make sure you're not using a flash to take pictures. Also make sure that you are diffusing the light that is hitting the model. No lighting should be direct to the model from the source.

You know, lookin' at the stuff on display here...I ain't got a prayer of winnin' this thing. So much skill and pretties to behold! I feel like I turned up to a fencing match with a wiffle bat. But hey-ho, ever forwards. Me old man always said shoot for the moon, that way when you miss 'an thud into a mountain range, you can at least pretend it was scaling peaks you was really all about.

For any of you wonderin' what I have been up to...here is a step by step. I welcome constructive criticism, but I can't promise I won't weep bitter tears of inadequacy once enlightened by you fine folks.

So, One ORC trooper, all base coated with Vallejo polyurethane Black Primer.

Image

Next, I sprayed him with a few thin coats of Vallejo Game Color Imperial Blue.

Image

After that, a 50/50 mix of Imperial Blue and VGC Electrc Blue, makin' sure I am only sprayin' downward so the undersides are left in 'shadow'.

Man, I really wanted to participate but forget to make a shot previous to painting. (I am quite in rush to get my Miniatures ready for the Role Play Convention Tournament in Cologne).

I actually wanted to submit the new Azrail Figure, I guess there is no way somebody believes me I just got it the other day?

If not, I might really need to get this Aleph Starter Pack and the Marut I am planning to buy since several weeks :aleph:

No problem! That picture was all I needed with a time stamp. Before painting could you take a picture with your computer clock or phone in the background with the date showing? The one that you can submit is the ORC trooper. He's the one with a free hand and rifle down with all the heavy armor.
