I have a hard time imagining what I'd do without my own airbrushes, nowadays... My brush work is rather shoddy (thanks to unsteady hands) no matter what I try and the airbrush just feels so natural for me to use. I also have difficulty with brush blending and find the airbrush's natural gradients to be easier.

If you have interests in airbrushes, I think there's a currently active thread on the official forums about it in the Miniatures section.

Do you have any ideas on a color scheme?

Hi Claudius, I'm going with a dark armour, with a blue ish tinge and some green accent colours.

I spent a few hours last night getting it started.

Flesh is a purple/pink. Still need to take the flesh up a notch to make it pop. Green accent needs work and I think I'll adjust the stripes on the head.

Still don't know what colour I'm going to do the bases yet.

You need some bright base to contrast with the dark mini. The teal, that Angel uses, might fit. Or some rusty red...just an idea.

Like your mini a lot. Maybe add some osl effects, with a bright glow, that would look pretty cool. :)

Thanks for the feedback Kenza. Appreciate it.

Yeah it really needs a brighter base. I've been thinking the blue because the red might be to much contrast.

I'm thinking I need more OSL from his hand guns on to his fingers and maybe around his eyes.

Thanks for pointing out the guides for airbrushes. I held off on getting one to force myself to get better at brushwork. But it really is time consuming, so I would probably benefit from starting with an airbrushed basecoat and doing brush layers on top of that.

Anyway here's the Mobile Brigada all primed up.

I'd suggest a teal/blue for the base, but vivid and bright. You might be able to get away with sand/dry dirt. The "green" accent you have looks more blue to me, personally. I agree that it needs some work. Do you have an airbrush? I'd consider tracing those lines with an airbrush to get a slight OSL and add more intensity to the black armor plates.

Nothing prevents you from getting better at brushwork, even if you have an airbrush. They're useful for different effects. The key is to find which effect you're going for and which tool can best get it done. I've painted with the foam that comes in the blisters before, because I wanted that crusty/flaked effect.

What're you looking to do? OSL? NMM? Shading? Highlights/blending?

I can't help you if you don't have a goal in mind.

I... Don't like those whites. They look too soft to be armor. The edges also lack a lot of definition. How're you painting the white? Just straight and then shading? It looks like it needs some color saturation to it.

My suggestions:
-Better define the edges of the whites
-Don't use straight white for the majority of the white, use Ivory or another off-white color for the base color. White is reserved for edge highlights and blending
-Be more careful with how harsh some of those shadows appear.

It looks fine, but could be improved. Sorry if I sound harsh. Just trying to help.

Well thank you Claudius.
It may be the lamp. I haven't used any bright white yet. What you see is a neutral gray primer and about seven layers of milk thin Vallejo Stencil with the first of a planned three layers of Vallejo Pale Wash. It's only about half way there.
I also paint 'for the table' I want the shadows to be harsh. At three to six feet they will be good to have on the model.
Of course, I have been told that there's no accounting for my tastes.

Edit: I tossed a coat of Green on him

What heresy is this? I'm actually making progress on a model? So I consider this to be basecoat done with some first layer stuff, now comes the tricky part of deciding what details I want to progress on and generally where do I want to do in colors.

I've always found blacks tricky because you really gotta go multi tiered grey but you can't go too grey otherwise you lose the black portion of it.

I think my basegood is a good enough black color that I can start the first highlight of lighter colors on top.

Also excuse the fact that my lighting is junk cause it's the middle of the night. Fair warning I'm terrible with a camera too.

Loving how the Anathematic is coming along

In terms of contrast with the base, it might be worth thinking about a split-complimentary colour scheme like this one. Not sure exactly how I'd be using the yellow-green it suggests - perhaps as moss patches on neutral coloured rocks?

I love that colour scheme designer web tool and often play with it to help with colour choices for my minis. I once did an exercise on my blog where I got readers to feed me some numbers to help me decide what colours to paint. This was the colour scheme it came up with and here's the finished result.

Thanks Maxvon_d, that mini Toxic Tilly Mini looks amazing.

Here is my updated Anthematics. I ended up going with a blue and some shrub grass as well. Didn't have any unique grass so just painted some brown grass in reds and blues.

Next I think the tentacles need some more work to highlight them even more.

I'm happy with the armour and toned down the green a bit, removing it from the head because it took away from the mini and his head is slightly warped so it only emphasized the flaw.

Hopefully when im done I'll bust out a better camera than my phone to take some better pictures.

Those grasses have come out nicely. People often don't think about painting static grass but it actually helps to drybrush with a lighter colour - gives a bit of tonal variation and acts a bit like a mascara in thickening and helping it to stand up.

I liked the green lights, I reckon you should push them further to help definition and break up the black shapes.

It's crazy how much just playing around with lighting and backdrop can make on the quality of a model image

It's also frustrating realizing that zoomed up close, all of the sloppy lines you couldn't see before popping up now.

I gotta retouch some of it and work on the shading. I haven't even touched the wires yet.

Ha, yeah, i feel the same every time. You're happy with your results, snap a few pics, post 'em and suddenly all those sloppy lines start to pop up right before your eyes, that you didn't notice a few moments before. I hate it when that happens. ;)

Anyways, i got to work on my horrinle airbrush results from last time. I'm almost done with the armour of my ABH - now it's time to block some more colours in.

For more pictures, please come and check my blog. I'm quite happy i was able to save the paintjob. But it cost me a whole lot of time. I hope, the next steps will be less of a hassle. :D

Great work you guys got in over the weekend!

Sorry I haven't been too particularly active posting my own WIP, but my current project is a little more 1:1 scale rather than 32mm.
