Summer '15 Entries [Data-Sphere Painting Campaign]

by Claudius Sol » March 31st, 2015, 2:25 pm

Data-Sphere Painting Campaign!
Summer '15 Season

The goal of this campaign is to paint our models and show off our progress in an attempt to keep a steady and sustainable pace of painting.
Participants (and observers) are encouraged to share Work In Progress (WIP) pictures and divulge their techniques and recipes for their works.
High amounts of detail and creativity are encouraged, but not required for participation.

To enter:
  1. Post in the season's thread with your entry. Both an unpainted (with a timestamp) and finished picture of the entry.

The theme of this season is: Heavy Infantry!

Requirements:

ARM of 3 or more
Wounds of 2 or more (there are some exceptions, such as the Authorized Bounty Hunter)

That's it! You'll note that models like Ajax, despite being classified as a Warband, will qualify as a Heavy Infantry for this campaign. Please keep that in mind.

In the case of a partial profile that qualifies, all models of that profile must be submitted. Profiles such as the Dog Warriors of Ariadna or a Nomad Iguana or other "transforming" models will require both the "HI" profile model and the "non-HI" profile model (such as the TAG of the Iguana).

Everyone needs some "Muscle" every now and then to smooth over the process. Let's show some love to those big guys!

That's it!

At the end of each Season (this one ending on May 31st at 23:59:59 UTC), no more submissions will be accepted and the season's submissions will be compiled together. The following month, poll thread(s) will allow users to vote for which models they most like! There is no strict criteria on what you are casting your vote for! What this means is that users can vote on the "Most Improved", "Best Painted", "Most Interesting", "Most Ambitious", "Most Helpful", "Most Friendly", "Most Involved", "Most Funny", etc.! This form of voting doesn't prevent amateur or new painters from taking part. I know I'll always be voting for those that try their hardest. You'll also have multiple votes, so no worrying about which entries to pick! Votes are changeable at any time during the voting month. Voting for this first season will end on June 30th at 23:59:59 UTC.

To vote:
  1. View the appropriate thread for the month that you wish to vote for.
  2. View ALL entries for that month in the provided Imgur album (that will be accessible in the top post).
  3. Select your vote(s) from the Poll in the thread.

You're done!

Note: it's possible that the number of entries will require multiple poll threads. In this case, please view all threads.

Prizes!
But wait! There's more!

For each season, there will be 3 winners that will be featured.
Second and Third places will receive commemorative patches and feature in a blog post.
First place will receive the same prizes as Second and Third, as well as some Vallejo paints to reward their artistry.

Best of luck!

If you have any questions, post 'em below and I'll respond in the thread.
If you want to see the last Season's entries, click here.

EDIT: Clarified classification of HI models.
EDIT2: Clarified the procedure for multiple model profiles.
EDIT3: Fixed the dates for the conclusion of the season! For future reference, all seasons will be two months for the entry period and one month for the voting period.

Ah, yes. Don't forget to take those "Before" pictures! That's an easy one to screw up and I'd hate to see good work go down the (sometimes literal) drain!

Quick clarifications: Summer? Shouldn't it be Spring? Also, voting ends a month after the contest ends?

I may enter too (probably with Mr. Pantene Commercial (Achilles) or somebody else), but don't guarantee it yet.

It's Summer because the previous was Spring. They're named after when they end. Probably a bad choice on my part. I'll likely change the naming convention next year, but it's a little too late this year.

Yes, voting starts when submissions are closed. The voting then closes a month later, which is when the next season starts.

I hope you can participate!

Here's my entry. Hopefully I can get him done in a month

Not sure how I'm going to paint him yet as he's the first of my Haqq. Maybe a golden yellow? Thoughts anyone? I don't want to do the usual green and my Tohaa are blue with white details.

Welcome to the 'Sphere, Volt_Ron!

If you already have blue/white... Why not a red/black? Pretty much opposite scheme.

Red is a great color for these sorts of events because it's slightly tricky to get looking "right" and you can use the wealth of knowledge that will invariably visit this thread to provide advice and critique for you.

That's true. Red and black are both hard colors to do but can look really good when done right. I'm weary of black however since I have a huge Protectorate army I originally painted with black being the main color and now I want to repaint them haha! :suicide:

I'll need to retake my "before" picture since I did it a day early, but I'll be taking this opportunity to paint my Anathematic. I've been simultaneously excited about painting this model and also dreading it ever since I acquired it a few years ago.

I'm really excited about this contest. I totally missed the Spring one, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what all everyone puts together in the next couple of months.

Will go for the ABH, but might also do Joan, depending on the time I might have left in the end.

That fine with you, Claudius? :)

I'm in. Either with a Swiss Guard, a Hsien or Joan. I'll decide once I get home and take the picture :)
It does not matter if you win by an inch or by a mile. But the former is usually more fun.

Why not all three? Go ahead and put all three in the "before" picture and you can paint and pick which to submit at the end! Or you can submit them all!

First entry, so I feel it appropriate to put up the first WIP photo...

Image

I decided to go with red for a Red team vs. Blue Team vibe since my Tohaa are blue and white.

Image

The red is pretty much done and I started blocking out some other colors so I could see if I liked it.

C+C appreciated!

Wow, that was quick, Volt_Ron!

While you say the red is done... I think it could use more shading (using browns) to better bring out the vibrancy of the red. As it is right now, it looks very washed out, though that might be the lighting. What are you using the highlight the red? Are you mixing whites or are you using Yellows/oranges? I'd recommend using yellows.

Thanks! I have VERY limited time to paint nowadays due to having a newborn in the house, I gotta take advantage of it. Probably won't see more progress till next week though haha

I have a feeling its the picture (usually) because the red is VGA Bloody Red as the main color and is very vibrant in person. I used VGA Hot Orange as the edge highlight, then 50:50 Hot Orange: White. VMA Hull Red was used as an under coat/shading.

Maybe this is better picture?

Man, painting red is a PITA....

There is a lot of beige in that picture. It could be throwing the auto-white balance off. Could you do it in front of a white sheet of paper?

My first WIP, nothing as spectacular as volt-ron's.

I've just managed to clean the fig from flash, assemble it and make a nice base.
Ready for priming!

And I need to decide on a colour scheme... He'll have to fit in with my Haqq, but he should also definately stand out as a stranger amongst them.

I tried with a white sheet behind and messing with the colors and levels in PS to see if it was closer. This is about as far as I got.
