I'm feeling so super dumb to post this shot but it doesn't help. I tried shooting the top when not worn, but you couldn't see a thing... -_-
So yeah, have this stupid picture of the finished top... >_<

Keep it easy, Yashia ;) No need to feel dumb.

Oh yay! Packing hard foam! It's a great material that only requires a bit of cover-up to disguise it! Light, durable, and slightly flexible to take impacts!

Can't wait to see.

The painted pistol. I added 12 layers of wood glue to make it smooth but I'm not yet satisfied with the result. I think I'm going to retouch it at some time.

Interesting... I'm not too sure if I like it as it is now. Do you care to wear it and taking a selfie? :D

Just looks odd to me as it is. Might have to do with matching color with the head mannequin.

Re: Yashias Cosplay Blog [WIP Oznat]

MUCH better when worn.

Good:
  • Pretty good volume
  • Well done braids
  • Decorations are quite convincing (maybe some more bone-like texture and weathering needed?)

Bad:
  • Not enough gravity defying hair
  • Coloration should be a little more pink/blue towards the end, no?
  • Needs the facemask and helmet to complete the look

Just my opinions there, but it's really coming along fantastically!

Don't know how you'd go about making the hair spike out more while retaining a "soft and not gelled" look. :?:

The coloration could be done by your friend with an airbrush! See if he wouldn't mind brushing a white -> pink -> grey/blue gradient for you!

I will eagerly await further progress to fuel my own motivations.

Color in the concept is mostly white... it seems to be more a shading than coloring.

And the photo show plenty of shading as is.

Coming along nicely and I like the volumes in the hair.

Re the pistol, I'm taking my first tentative foray into the world of cosplay by making a Mass Effect Carnifex pistol and having researched a bit opted to get some Rosco Foamcoat. Apparently they use it in theatrical prop making to give a tough outer shell on polystyrene that's also sandable (if that's a word). Yet to give it a try but I've got high hopes.

Inevitably it won't work how I imagine it will but I'll have to adapt and come up with workarounds, etc. I figure there's a lot of that in costume-making, just as there is in the tabletop gaming hobby :)

Anyway, look forward to seeing how your Oznat progresses. You're doing the whole red skin with white tattoos thing?

This is a compromise. It has to look comic like and unrealistic but still like a real character. Has to be adjusted when the mask is finished, so consider this still a WIP.

To be honest I always saw it like Mob of Blondes:
Mob of Blondes wrote:Color in the concept is mostly white... it seems to be more a shading than coloring.
And the photo show plenty of shading as is.

Neither the Concept nor the Mini shows any pink, so I don't know where you see that. The blue/grayish is a shadow as far as I see it... :?:

TanKoL wrote:Exactly what I was thinking about, it's part of a bigger whole, so need to see what it looks like with the mask included :)

Yes, it does. That's the reason why I first only showed you the wig on the wig head and not on mine ;) The mask isn't finished yet and when it is I'll have to do some adjustements to make both fitting together. So as I said above: The wig is a WIP until the mask is finished and I post the comparison shot ;)

Thanks for the detailed feedback! :)

Maxvon_d wrote:[...] You're doing the whole red skin with white tattoos thing?

Yes, I am. Bought some airbrush body paint for that reason. I'm curious how that'll work out. Don't have any experience with that yet.

Just thought, but why not use a zentai suit for that? Makes it a lot less annoying to reapply the exact patterns every time you don the costume.

Glad to hear you've got the coloration thing figured out. I was just looking at the concept art that was shown on Beasts Of War, but that was probably just discoloration on their part. Looking at the cover of the artbook, it does look rather straight white (with some dirtiness to it).

Well the suit would be against the general rule of cool (in this case cool means I'm not dying a heat death at a convention) ;)

And I'm referring to this Concept Art. It differes a lot from the Artbook artwork :)

Are zentai suits that warm? :?

That's the concept art I was looking at before. Does it not look like it fades down to a blue/grey?

@ Claudius:
For me it looks like the grey is supposed to be shaddow. If hair changesit's color in Infinity it has always been pretty obvious. And I think the wig has a pretty natural color range. But I guess it's taste after all ;)

The suit is not that warm. When I wore my Asura 1.0 a year ago in winter I was actually freezing. But I chose the Oznat because on a convention I'm happy about every centimeter of bare skin. I loved the bare midrift when I wore the Chimera on last years Roleplay Convention :D

As I promised here's the pistol with another 11 layers of wood glue and reworked painting. Think now it's fine.

Hmm... I'm not a big fan of the "soft" appearance of the gun, but that's probably just taste. I would've been much more favorable to sharper and more defined shapes/edges.

Well, I'm still learning ;) But since it will be mostly in it's holster I think I'm satisfied for now :)

I did some weathering on the clothes so neckband, top and the skirts tails are very dirty now. But most importantly: Atzilla used his airbrush skills to give the holster belt some shading. It looks so much deeper and gloomy now! *_*
Image

Since the holster changed a lot by the airbrush shadows have a complete picture here.

You're right! That airbrush really darkened that belt. Much more "fierce" now.

Seeing the vivid red on the pants again... I hope you can match it on your skin! I can't really gauge how well your skin will display color. I'm pretty tanned, so body paint just doesn't work on me. It's always a ton of shades off. And that was in middle school when I was lighter than I am now!

Have you tried matching a body paint with the pants yet?

Where did you buy it? Do you by chance have any pictures at hand? That would help me find the equivalent in my country.

I wish you good luck with your project and make sure to show some pics! :)

@Claudius:
No, I didn't try it yet, since the paint is very expensive.
But I'm very pale (I tried tanning by sun and solarium, but I simply don't take color) and the one time I tried a tanning shower the result was pretty extreme, even though I took the lightest tone. So I guess my skin takes color pretty good (when it's not up to it doing so on its own... -_-)

Hahaha! Well, I hope you can match the paint well, then!

You could always do a test paint on just a small area and see if it matches color with the worn pants.
