Max Von D's Minis

by Maxvon_d » August 25th, 2014, 7:19 pm

Time to start a painting thread on here with my Infinity minis. They'll be predominantly Aleph and Haqqislam with a smattering of Mercs 'n Civvies, though I have pre-ordered Icestorm so don't be surprised to see Nomads and PanO join the party :)

First up, Odalisque with Spitfire:

And also completed this weekend was the O-12 VIP who I decided to give a white coat as he played the scientist in my recent Paradiso Mission 203 game:

Very nice painting here.
As said by Maru, the gun and knife look painted on a higher level than the other parts.

And I like the way you've done the O-12. Good idea, and cool painting.

Cheers guys. For some reason the pictures haven't come out as nicely as I'd like: I'm still getting to grips with my new camera and it does a weird thing with reds/oranges I've found.

Anyway, here's a few more of my recent pieces:

I reeeeaally like your Aleph color theme and how you pulled it off. Also GoGo Marlene is hot.
Not a fan of your Haqq, red+beige just doesn't do it for me but that's just my personal preference.

Cheers for the comments all :)

Arachas wrote: I especially love your OSL, could you share your technique?

To do the glowing lights 'n stuff I've got a really good strong turquoise green, Vallejo Game Colour I think.

I tend to start with a 50:50 mix of that and pure white which I paint in the spot/line or wherever. I think I then go in with a pure white dot or thin line. Next up I use a thinned turquoise, flooding the spot and allow it so spread slightly over the edges. After that has dried I'll go back with the pure white again to really make it glow. Sometimes I'll go back with the thinned turquoise glaze and blur the edges lightly to represent that light overspill.

Unfortunately, as with all my painting, I tend not to have a fixed technique for things and often go back over areas fixing things as I see them, so it can be hard to lay out a step by step recipe. But that above is roughly the approach I use I think.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that does help! I assume you apply the OSL at the final stages of painting the model?

Yep, that's right. In the case of the ground lighting it's about the last thing I do before painting the faction symbol (what the heck was I thinking when I thought that would be a good idea?! :D ) and varnishing.

Oh, your the guy with the wicked red Haqqislam. I've seen those guys around a few times, very nice.

I really like your take on GoGO Marlene, that's done with wet blending yah? Or is it some sort of airbrushing trick?

Re: Max Von D's Minis

Cheers.

For my blending I tend to use the glaze approach, coupled with a wet palette so that I can mix up a fairly smooth range of colours. What I tend to do is mix up slightly different tones on the palette and apply them directly, then I'll often go back with a thinned version of a mid tone and lightly paint / glaze back to smooth things out. It's quite liberating to know that you can always go back and paint back over an area and tidy things up - especially as the original colours are still sat there on the palette.

The colour scheme on GoGo was inspired by the artist Hyung Tae-Kim who I've seen using some lovely lime<-->orange gradients. His style seemed very appropriate for our cutesy journalist. I also figured that she would find it essential to colour accessorise with her camera bot!

I did actually use soft pastel shavings for the rust red colouring on the Haqq bases. Way cheaper than modelling pigments :) weathering on the boots and bottom of coats would be a good idea. For some reason I never get round to doing it!

Anyway, I've been on a bit of a painting break, doing little more than assembling some of the Op:Ice minis.

However, the muse is back with me and I'm working on some more Aleph stuff. Here's WIPs on a Deva and Myrmidon Hacker:

Quick little addition as I'm now working on getting a simple 300pt PanO list up and ready as quickly as possible. First up is Fusilier 1:

Image
PanO Fusilier Miniature Speedpaint by Maxvon_d, on Flickr

He's messy compared to my usual stuff but I really want to get these to table as fast as possible so, having set myself a countdown timer I managed to get this one done in a record-breaking (for me) three hours

Also, wish I could remember who it was who inspired the camo fatigues so I could pass on the props. I had painted them on my Haqqislam before but seeing how cool they looked on PanO I just couldn't resist. I tried going through the minis forums here but couldn't find them

Thanks!

I was pleased with the platinum coloured hair on the Deva and it made her look quite different to the studio job.

Next update is another PanO Fusilier:

Image
PanO Fusilier 2 by Maxvon_d, on Flickr

She weighed in at about 3.5 hours and I'm really pleased with the result:time ratio. I took a little longer this time with the blue blends and on the hair and face. I like painting their tiny faces!

Also, I decided to get the camera out mid way and do a step-by-step guide to painting the camouflage for my blog. You can find it here:
