I'd have to agree with Maru and think the greens could use a bit of brighter, thinner line highlighting to just have it pop a bit more. The subtle highlights work on the flatter panel joins, but those corners could stand to be more pronounced.

Still looks like it took skill to do, though, and I support this!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Usually I mix the green highlights new on every model, but for the large areas of green on Scarface I decided to use old paint jars and mix the two highlight colours in them, so I wouln't run out of paint in the middle of the process. Seems I was a bit to careful with adding the Bonewhite I use to ligthen the green up. So for future models at least, I will remedy that. Don't know if I'll be motivated to retouch an already finished model, we'll see :)

So, turns out I was motivated enough :D and retouched Scarface with a lighter green on some of the hard edges (Doesn't look like it is visible in the pic :( ).

Edit: I'm doing some additional details on him, will post new pics when done

It looks better.

You could stand to pronounce the effect further, if you're feeling up to it. Maybe an off-white-into-green very edge highlight would really make those edges pop more? Like a mint kind of color.

Anyway, just my two cents.

That's something :) Not sure if I want to take it up further, because it risks him looking to different from the other greens in my force...

Anyway, did some additional details on him:

I'm of two minds when it comes to the really hard, white, highlights.
It looks good from a certain angle, but like a lot of painted on lighting effects, it can lose something when you move the model around. Great for a display case, but doesn't always work on the table. That is, of course, subjective and situational, though.

Also, it's become a standard style which is a little confused with artistic ability. It's a bit like saying Picaso was more skilled than Divinci because you personally prefer cubism. I'm not saying the style doesn't look good, I'm just saying we should be careful to recognize it is a style.

I'm just a sucker for the well defined and pronounced edges.
Gives harder edges that just really make models pop for me.

As an aside, if you have trouble with eyes or just want to make them better, a nice trick is to paint them first.

Sorry for the interruption, please go back to admiring Sandmanns' awesome paint jobs :D

:)

Finished painting a Sekban. He's slightly converted - the gun was trimmed down, and I removed the gun from his right holster- so that it looks as if he just drew it from there.

Thanks guys! I hope to give the Sekban a whirl when I finish his two buddies, so they can be my Haris-team when I use my odalisques as my main link.

And now, for something completely different:
A friend gave me his McMurrogh to paint, giving me the opportunity to test out two things that were new to me:
Airbrushing and painting a tartan pattern. McMurroghs armor is the first thing on a mini ever that I airbrushed - I bought one only recently and have been using it to mess around with terrain mostly.

Great paint job - I really like the red armour, very aggressive looking.

My only comment - and this could just be the photo - is the armour looks a little flat. A dark red or light brown wash in the crevices and some pale orange highlights would make the armour look really sharp.

I generally think your tones are a little too pastel, to my taste, but I must say that plaid is absolutely brilliant, what's your method? I have one that works ok but wouldn't do that.

@H1ghlander: Picture is not the best, the armor looks better irl. It got a final accent painted on with, you can just about see it in the second picture on his arm. I thought about washing it, but didn't want to destroy my work in case it didn't work out alright... Next time

@Hordshyrd: Well, there's no accounting for taste :D I like them.
The plaid was relativly simple (only three colours, you can do way more): First basecoated dark green and higlighted slightly. Then the green lines were drawn in. After that the red ones. What you try to do is a criss-cross-effect: so one red line goes under a green line and over the next. The next red line does the same, only the other way around. Finally highlight red+green and put little beige/white dots in the intersection and a few highlights to the dark green.

Dark brown leather parts could use more hightlighting and the guns look a bit boring all silvery like that. At least the grips and handles should be plasticy black. Eyes and cloth look great.

Or woody brown. Or plastic brown, or tan, or olive green.

The browns usually get two highlights after washing. Either my mix was too dark this time or the pictures swallowed some of it - they look alright in person.

On the guns: Yeah, I see what you mean. However, I think I'll keep it the way they are painted now, if only for consitencys sake.

Warning, shoddy pics incoming! Finished a Sekban with Spitfire, but with only interior lighting, the photography didn't turn out so well...
