Flower bed? What about a latticework to let climber plants climb? If you put only plants in some zones of this trellis, you get two different surfaces to break the walls.

Or awnings, that can give variation and also volume if deployed. Or combining the ideas, a pergola.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

I'd honestly leave the skylights white, they look great as-is.

Thanks all. This has been an interesting project so far, but I think it is for the most part a success, at least in that I am learning quite a bit about scale modelling buildings in 28mm scale (actually 1:55 scale, but close enough)

Arachas wrote:I bet you could land a pretty good job as an architect mate! Maybe you already are and you're doing this in your spare time...

Naw, just took some courses in High School several decades ago...

Alf O'Mega wrote:Really great, inspirational stuff. How have you made the curved roof terrace? Just intrigued as to how you get a smooth curved wall.

I use forms, and laminated the paper to it... Look carefully and you can see the lamination layers in the following photos

There is a bit more, like making the forms etc, but simply put, if you glue 2+ pieces in a curve, they will hold that curve-- for the most part-- when the glue cures.

Excellent suggesting. Thanks :) I like the trellis idea best. So I'll try it. The Pergola would have to be detachable, but would fit in with the style. I may try it. Just be careful how you say 'pergola' when in Finland ;)

Here is the finished rooftop. I went with a light gray for the skylights. White was a bit too stark a contrast.

The skylights are removable, for playabilty of course

And a scale comparison with the building from the Icestorm box

Works out nicely, eh?

And a bit OT, but I finally started assembling the GenCon minis. The Bootleg Penny is a fantastic mini, and a perfect Kum biker. The Cosplay Bolt not so much.(missing her backpack too... I'm sure the replacement is in the mail...) Still, I'll use it as a Bagh-Mari proxy.

Clear is probably better for allowing lines of sight, so if you plan to let people shoot through the windows that's probably a good way to go.
The frosted glass is better for not allowing firing lanes.

For a building like this with such small windows it's bit hard to say which way to go. Opaque windows won't do much to change the nature of the building while lof offering windows probably won't come into play very often, but it would provide a good bit of sneaky unexpetedness now and then.

So it's easy to go wither way, except in the bathrooms of course, keep those frosted!

Thank you all for the input. Clear for the common areas, frosted for the bathroom. Works well. For firing through windows, well, hmm, *hand-waves* -- bullet-proof glass-- or better yet, curtains or blinds. Interior details are forthcoming too, once the exterior is completed, whenever that may be :(

Here are the finished windows, and the doors-- minus the handles. Clear for everything, as mentioned, except the bathroom windows-- there are 3 of those, 2 small ones over the toilet and the shower, and a large one by the bath-tub, shown here in these photos
ImageImage
Here is the front
Image
And a close up of the porch
Image
I do like how those tiles turned out. Now just a few more exterior details, and a bit of paint and boom! done with the exterior. Then re-do the interior, using what I learned from building the Comfort Station. Like making the interior easily removable...

Thanks, and Me too. Printing floors ( for the interior) is the way to go I think. The exterior tiles have to be the real thing. I am very happy with that patio. :)

Arachas wrote:I might have missed this: what material are you using for the windows?

Thanks and for the *glass* I am using plastic from an old DVD case (the frosted glass), and from a plastic plate
Image
Score the area areound the ridges and snap out the circular shape. then just cut to fit, or rather score and snap, and then use a nail file to clean up the edges if needed.
Image
The plastic from the DVD case can be glued using model cement. I am not sure about the stuff from the plate, but I suspect that model cement will work on it too.

And just a bit more work. Added the vigas to the building
ImageImage.
Slowly working my way through the punch list. I should finish the exterior soon enough... RL permitting....

Although I found a little time for a papercraft project. Something to hone the skills for a big papercraft project-- a galleon. This is a 1:43 piece WIP. If it works out, I may scale it down (digitally of course) and print a 1:55 version for use in Infinity.
Image
This papercraft stuff is fascinating, now that I am looking into it more. Let the printer be your painter. :didactic:

Dozers and scrapers could be of different sizes.

Your paperwork fits Infinity wery well without rescaling and redoing that job again (doesn't count if you are a bit masochistic and enjoy assembling it :D )

M2Cat makes a good comment about the dozers, that type of industrial equipment seems to be built to such similar designs at different scales that some times you have no idea how big something is until you're right next to it.

Blackjack and Girls do not mesh well with heavy machinery. MoB is right, I would be most upset to have an over-sized vehicle on the table. It would, IMHO, destroy the effect I want. I can be rather particular at times. And there are two more such vehicles I for which I have plans. I found them here http://cp.c-ij.com/en/contents/2027/list_15_2.html I just got a new Canon printer and it seems Canon wants to induce me to use up a lot of ink. Effective plan that those corporate weasels have ;)

For example, here are the failed efforts for the rooftop. You can see two failed skylight attempts and a failed vent attempt.
Image

And the wall vent for the shower. First try at a covered vent, well, it is crude, to say the least
Image

The second try is much better. The color choice still nags me a bit. Thoughts?
Image

The cellar door turned out fine the first time though. See it next to the source for the idea
ImageImage
Blue doors too. Fits perfectly with the design choices I've made. Gotta love that :)

Not much else to show. Thanks for stopping by.

Scale of things, sometimes, depends in the small details. Put wrong size of ladder or cabin, and everything changes.

Not interested in the huge dump truck? I had found that page once you showed the 1/43 try, as well as some other models from other places, there are 4 construction machines and also two firefighter trucks that could be nice (boxy is not an issue, otherwise some cars and helicopters too). One of the other models was 1/25 and someone did 1/50 with the same blueprints. The issue is that for those that are not into building a lot, or value time, some of these machines can be had in 1/50 prepainted and all for not much money (relative... or maybe resin, MDF, card kits are expensive).

Most vents are designed not to stand out, at least as far as I know, try a color that fits into the wall better, perhaps black or a darker brown then the wall behind, would detract the eye without making it altogether invisible.

I would go for something already there (same supplier) or similar (trying to get a match, but different suppliers), like the brown from the window frames or the columns or the vigas. Same for the cellar door, unless security code or something it has to be shinny blue, something more earthlike would look better.

MoB, yeah, interested in the Dump Truck. All four construction pieces actually, because they look nice, and would make great terrain for a mining facility or some sort of large scale construction/terrascaping project. I think I'll try a scaled down version, say 80% of the original (which would make it more or less 1:55) first, once the current piece is done. There are many interesting pieces there on that site. I downloaded most of them already :) If for no other reason than to have the files available to modify for my own purposes at some point.

Thanks for the C&C guys. The vents will be brown. The doors stay blue. I like blue doors. It is a unifying motif on all my Bourak buildings. Plus it matches the source material.

Woot! Double Frickin' post. :)

Little bits of things done, since not much hobby time. Some Objectives for Infinity ITS scenarios... papercraft supply crates on custom bases. Bright colors FTW! Easy to see on the table.
Image
Also some planters, WIPs of course. The crates are not fixed to the bases, so I can use the bases for other objectives, like antennas ( or antennae if your name is Gaius Iulius or somesuch).

Decided to try again with the hill plus building idea.
ImageImageImage
I like the idea of 'contour' buildings. We'll see where this goes. There will have to be a dome though. It is de riguer, n'est-ce pas?

Oh, and yeah, a fence/wall for a contest. First the form,
Image
Never can have too many clamps. Never can say that too many times either :didactic:

Then the result
ImageImage

When put side by side
Image
The plan is to make 8 of these 6" pieces, and 4 corner pieces, 2 with gates, 2 with something else. Then decorate all the stuff somehow, fountains, planters, who knows. I should end up with an 18"x18" walled area. Perfect for a garden... or a guesthouse ;)

Thanks for stopping by.

Oh... I'm pretty curious to see where you take that wall project. Will you have decorations "follow the curve", so to speak, or used to "straighten out" their form?

That contour hill/building is also quite a fun idea.

The Objectives aren't as exciting to me, but I suppose probably took the least amount of effort, as well.

Well Claudius S, the objective markers are a quickie, just to have something on the table. I don't normally faff about with the ITS Scenarios and so have never wanted/needed objective markers like that.

Now the fence OTOH, is at this point
ImageImage
and the gates-- there will be 2-- will look like this
Image
and there will something else in each of the 2 remaining corners. Possibly a gate house or garden house. Currently undecided.

And just to be a completionist, an experiment
Image

Some quickie planters, which now need a proper paint job
Image

And the table I brought to the Baltimore Brawl
ImageImage

I'll have more on the buildings, contour and otherwise soon enough. I need to actually paint a mini or two. Although I did have a mostly painted force at the tourney. Only 3 minis had visible primer. So I had that going for me. And had a lot of fun too.

Thanks for stopping by.
