Can someone suggest a beginner-level Morat skin recipe?

by flintlocklaser » August 31st, 2014, 9:52 pm

Like it says. I haven't been able to play Infinity since the beginning of the year and I'm starting back up this fall. I'd love to get the new Morat minis on the table, but in addition to my normal worries about my terrible painting skills, I am also completely clueless as to how to approach Morat skin.

Can anyone recommend a fairly simple recipe that gives a decent tabletop result? Ideally I'd like it to not be much more complex than base color + shading + highlight as anything more complex than that is a bit above my pay grade. I mostly use GW paints but have access to P3 and Vallejo at local stores.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

I thin VMC Cavalry Brown is fairly good muted base for a red. VMC Flat Red for highlights and... Black wash? (I use washes rarely).

I'd suggest something bit lighter than khorne red, then baal red wash (whatever it's called now) and then highlight something along the old blood red. For tabletop i, personally tebd to use a three step gradient - black undercoat -> 2:1 mix of black and blood red -> 1:1 mix of the previous -> pure blood red. Also instead of washing i recommend you doing it with two brushes. First apply the mix and then spread it with clear brush. It gives a somewheat smooth gradient without an airbrush.

Edit: leave black in the deepest recesses.

Actually, for the super-simplest red skin recipe, try a base of Vallejo Basic Skintone or Sunny Skintone, then wash with Baal Red or whatever the hell GW is calling that color now.

2-3 coats of wash will give you a good, deep red color with dark shadows and pretty bright highlights.

Job's done.

I'd be tempted to do:

1. red base coat - dull red like Vallejo Model Colour Red or GW Mephiston Red
2. highlight pass with something like Vallejo Bronzed Flesh highlight pass (GW Cadian Fleshtone?)
3. (optional) Dot highlights with Kislev Flesh
4. followed by a 50:50 mix of GW Agrax Earthshade and Druchil Violet wash

I used a similar technique for my Sedition Wars Strain minis and you can see a step-by-step on my blog here

Adding a purple tone into the red shadows will give a nice rich colour I reckon

Hey folks - I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but when I asked this question back in August, real life got in the way and I shelved the painting project - but unfortunately forgot to come back and thank everyone for their suggestions!

Among my minis are two of the old Daturazi: I plan to try out Section 9s simplest paintscheme and see how it works out. But again, thank you all for the suggestions!
