Alu foil (kitchen) could pass as steel, with the right sanding/stratching/polishing. Or tin foil (crafts). Microscale has a glue for metal foils.

MoB, I tried the foil idea first (heavy foil, not the thin stuff). No go. Too flimsy on its own, and too much of a pain to plate onto anything. At least at this scale, and with the limited amount of time I have to experiment. It does have potential for other projects though, so stayed tuned...

Didn't know you spoke Dutch! Yeah, I had a blast. Italian lakes are beautiful, albeit a bit rainy during this time of the year. I've even got to see Venice which is more awesome than I had imagined it!

Good luck with the deadlines! It looks amazing and much more detailed than I would ever thought possible at that scale.

Metal foil version with black lining, just the main part, no extras:

It could had been done earlier, but the useless archiving of CB forum had preference. For any future item depending on this tech, I will remember to have the base perfectly smooth before wrapping with the foil, and maybe experiment with different polishing, as this one is really shiny from some angles. It was a bit rushed because I wanted to move on and have something. Too late for your competition anyway. Good luck.

The foil is just too easily marred, and a pain to affix to anything without a backing. However, It has potential.

I think in the future for stuff like this, I'll just use a printer to 'paint' the brushed steel look.

Judging is underway. So we'll see soon enough. I'll post more pix here when the judging is all done.

Different build approach, the thin foil wraps a solid part. Given a smooth base, it should be better than my rushed example.

Speaking of... any good sandable primer that sticks to near everything? Or thin filler for small areas. Without having to get into sprays, VOCs, etc.

As antithema as it would sound, GW liquid green stuff paint pot is kinda good for small gap filling. Doesn't dry clear or anything though. You might try Vallejo airbrush primer. It seems like it would be sand able in my experience using it. Of course, heavier duty primers will stick to more, but are likely less sandable. Not sure what you mean by VOCs.

Liquid Green Stuff... if just expensive acrylic gel (with pigment), tried and a bit rubbery.
Vallejo sells acrylic medium with marble dust under different names. Also tried.
Vallejo Surface Primers are acrylic urethane based. Tried too.
All them peel too easily when they meet sanding tools. Sometimes they work, sometimes they peel or leave visible jumps.

Volatile Organic Compounds. Smelly stuff.

The purpose is surface finishing, not hole filling, to be clear.

Might sound weird but once had a friend who filled small gaps with super glue. Sometimes liquid, sometimes gel. With an activator it cures really fast and is sandable.

For the filler, I've had different levels of success using miliput. I suppose most of you know it, but if not, it's basically a 2 component putty somewhat like GS. It's water soluble however, so you can make a "paste" of sorts of it, and in my experience it'll stick to most stuff. Never had it peel off without serious effort on my behalf, at least. Dries rock hard and is sandable.

If you haven't used it before, I'll recommend a pair of gloves, btw. It sticks to your fingers like crazy, especially if you're making a paste and need to knead it thoroughly.

Other than that, there's always stuff like Revell Plasto or Tamiya filler, although they might not stick THAT well to smooth non-plastic surfaces.

Oh, if you just want surface finishing... Why not sand beforehand? Most primers should level out any slight imperfections left behind by the sanding.

Mix talc/baby powder with super glue. Work fast because it dries fast and is sand-able. Wear a mask while using, for some reason it smells worse

Knew about and sometimes use Milliput and Tamiya, both a bit messy (gloves / washing, etc). Big waste or tricky mixing with Milliput for such small tasks, acetone for Tamiya makes them not get in the "quick to get out and store back" list.

Also tried superglue, but with baking soda for filling and reinforcing mostly. I will try with talc and keep looking for something easily "knife-able". Thanks.

The foil trick is what people building metal airplanes use, BTW. Also for chrome in cars. And I think I found the issues: base surface must be perfect (no rushing) and the foil must be plain (go for non "cute" one, or buy special products, maybe with the glue included). Mine has some kind of texture with logos and all kind of decorations, requiring prepolishing that will never reach the level of flat sheets.

I heard about white-out, yet to try, how does it hold and sand when applied to metals or plastics?

If you want dark metal, you can paint black or dark grey, then use pencils or the dust of sharpening them to get the dark shiny look.

It holds better to metal, and obviously paper, and sands readily enough, but can clog the paper. It is like really thick house paint.

I'm now wondering about the foil duct tape used in HVAC work. I think I'll get a roll next time I'm at the DIY store.

1000 mile-per-hour tape? It's pretty heavy duty aluminum foil, probably twice the thickness of "heavy duty" kitchen foil, plus the thickness of clear packing tape for the adhesive.

Yeah, you want thin to a degree, not thick. The common sources are kitchen foil, gilding supplies (maybe too thin) and hobby products with the glue included.

I've used that foil for subsonic wind tunnel testing before. It's good and strong but difficult to achieve a mirror shine as the process of removing it from the roll will naturally make wrinkles and creases. It's not the path I would go for scale modeling at this level and purpose.

I got a roll of it to play around with. It will be decent for chrome effects, not useful for brushed steel. It just takes a bit of care to work with. I think you guys are talking about the really heavy duty stuff, not this, which is quite thin. I can find uses for it. The glue smells like tomato vines though. Ugh.

I wonder if there is brushed steel contact paper. I have chrome contact paper... the search continues.

Bare Metal Foild doesn't list any steel (this is the hobby product I was talking about, the one with glue). But plain alu foil can be brushed as well as treated chemically.

Now, if people want to buy alu with micro stamped hexagons, I can supply.
