Announcing hidden deployment?

by captainspud » July 29th, 2014, 3:00 pm

A very quick one: When I was learning the game, my opponent told me that when you place someone in Hidden Deployment, you have to announce that fact; you don't have to give any details, but you have to present a headcount. Eg, "I have three models in hidden deployment."

I never questioned this because it made a certain amount of balance sense to me, but given that AD troops aren't announced, it did seem sort of out of place.

So I just looked up the rules for TO, and under hidden deployment, there's no mention of announcing the presence of hidden models:

Hidden Deployment. It allows the same type of deployment as CH: L-2 Camouflage, but there is no need to make use of a Marker. Provided that he does not move, the figure with CH: TO Camouflage will remain completely invisible. The player must take note of his figure’s position in the most detailed possible way (Cover, Prone, etc.) so that the adversary will be able to verify the data in the moment in which he reveals his position. If the miniature moves, the player must place a TO Camouflage Marker, and show his adversary that he really was in that position from the beginning of the battle. If the figure performs any other action, he will have to be replaced by the miniature instead of the Marker.
A miniature in Hidden Deployment does not add his Order to the Orders Reserve, as he is not on the game table. However, to carry out his first Order, which reveals his presence on the battlefield, he will not receive the Order from the Orders Reserve but will have to spend his own.

So, long post short: I'm assuming that you don't actually have to announce these models, and that the person who taught me to play (and by extension, my entire play group) has been playing it wrong. Is that correct?

You do not announce any deployment that does not have the model on the board. Neither AD nor Hidden are announced.

Deploying as a marker requires a declaration of sorts.

No model? No marker? No info for your opponent.

That said, I'd recommend taking a picture of where your TO guy hid. This removes all possibility of doubt. Just be sure to ask your opponent to turn around and to ask him to turn even when not using hidden deployment. Or just rely on the trust system.

I take a picture whenever I'm using JSA, even if I don't have any Ninja or Oniwaban for that reason. I don't bother doing that when using my Ariadna force though.

Agreed. You do not have to announce anything. You should, however (especially in tournament circumstances, where should becomes a must) take a picture, make a note, or whatever else. When we play casually at our LGS, we don't really mind...but in tourneys, pictures/notes are necessary.

Writing down during deployment a note something like this generally covers you (made up numbers n'stuff):

Sabotage (4-19)
Telemetry (3-15)
Ko Dali as AD2
Malignos Hacker back left corner inside of blue building
Shrouded #2 Lt

Although sometimes not only is it easier to just deploy as a TO marker instead of Hidden, you get the added benefit of the order being available as well.
