[Marc C's] Field Research Center

by MARC C » July 20th, 2014, 9:39 pm

Here is an idea I've been thinking about for a while :

Image
Image

The center can be opened easily to place models inside.
Image

Things to add :
1 - A ladder on the back of the center piece to climb to an antenna platform at the top.
2 - A second floor mezzanine inside the center piece.

Very cool. :) You could even use the middle and side sections as three separate smaller buildings/sheds too.

Well done. The second floor mezzanine? Any plans for exterior access to it, a small balcony perhaps?

Great work (as usual).
Are you going to make some more buildings like this?

@Lord Sessadore : I was thinking along the same lines. ;-)

@red harvest : A balcony is an excellent idea... wish I had that idea before I glued the model !

@Harlekin : Of all the stuff I created in the last year this aesthetics is to one that appeals the most to me. I'll be doing more of them in the coming weeks.

Thank you for the positive feedback guys.

Painting test :
Overall metal drybrush (you can't see it on the picture but it makes to cardboard look metallic.)
Orange/yellow shading for parts of the plating.
Not sure about the black lines along the edges?

Looks fine :)

I'm just not a fan of your idea of random orange shapes on a gray / metallic surface.
They say there will be Heaven and the Fount of Kausar,
That there, there will be pure wine and honey and sugar
Fill up the wine cup and place it in my hand
(For) ready cash is better than a thousand credits.

I like it! I'm actually a fan of the orange shapes on the grey. Not digging the black lines on the edges, though. Maybe an edge highlight of white instead or something like that?

Make another one. SImples ;)

Try a drag brush technique over the black edging.. it's like drybrushing only you drag the brush over the surface. Practice a bit with it first though. Use a gray or metallic. and a flat brush, not a round or filbert.

The Orange/Gray look makes me think it is for Nomads. I like the idea. The only other thing, perhaps some signage? I still need to figure out myself how to do that nicely.

Funny guy! ;) I'll be making more.

Yes signage at that scale is not easy. Every thing I tried up to now is not good...

Finished painting the exterior. I decided to put dark gray lines on the sides instead of black.

I love it. I love the building design, I love the dots of color on the building, I love the edging that matches the building's colors. Is the roof removable?

Please tell me you are doing a full table in this style!

Love your enthusiasm ! Yes I'm doing a full table the will mix my latest two concepts. The rounded roof buildings will be Research center buildings and the flat roof buildings will be the Military buildings protecting the civilians and scientists.

Lift the building and voilà! :

This is great stuff... I still haven't found a cheap source for the card stock you use, though.
I'm wondering if I could use red harvest's method of laminating thinner sheets together and then 'steal' some of your ideas.... hmmmmm.....

Staples will sell illustration board or presentation board. That will work. I think it is $5 for a 20"x30" sheet around here. Cutting through laminated stuff means cutting through dried glue, several layers sometimes. Most cutting should be done before hand, among other things.

I wonder if a razor saw would cut the chipboard. Save some wear and tear on your fingers.

Are the colors random, or do they act as a code for what each building's function is?

They create interesting LoFs, and the overhead piece (forget the word for it) blocks some LoF from higher up

What other type of building(s) would you like to see on a agricultural research center?

Mdbeyes: Are you in the USA? If so try Hobby Lobby and look in their cardstock/portrait section. They will have the heavier cardstock and presentation board like that.

You can use the %40 off coupon each day if you get their smartphone app. Makes it well worthwhile.
