Det paper terrain red outpost

by det » July 16th, 2014, 12:58 pm

Hi there!!

I built this table up in a couple of years, and may still add bitz and pieces. One thing I'll do eventually is try to repair it: lots of damaged ledges and corners which need attention before it's too late.

So...final table is this:

another, much sparser, layout:

This is all made from printed cardstock (everything) and foamcore (roofs and bases) plus some wood sprayed red/orange for the table itself.

Looking good chap, I'm using the same stuff for my club board.

Like the different sized crates as well. I've started sandwiching cereal box card between the two layers to make it all a little more solid.

It'll take a while, but i've used that one update that had the zillion photos from all angles to convince people that paper terrain is worth a look, so i'd love to have that one over here too

I used some of the David Graffam stuff (http://www.davesgames.net/) to fill out a table, but I'm moving toward using more and more scratch built stuff. The textures and designs are great, though, and your table looks like it would be a lot of fun to play on.

Here's a picture of a couple of his designs... the tower is a direct print of one of his pdf's and the sort of bunker is something I made from one of his paper designs, but from foam core and other materials.

Everything is playable, roofs come off, chairs and some tables can be moved...here is the proof: some close ups and internal shots of it all with some minies for reference.

thanks ladz!

@lupus: cool! keep it up!

@ jherazob : I'm migrating here most of the stuff. Probably some of the older wip/unfinished pics won't make it though.

@mbdeyes: I recognise both the tower and the building! I have them too! The problem with the tower is that it's interior is closed...argh! The bunker though I've had it printed but not yet built, since it could/should/will be the start of another terrain set, more bushy/foresty than this one.
I kept using paper terrain for this board for consistency: scratch building is cool but it looks IMHO way out of place on a paper terrain table.

Agreed. I'm trying to be more crafty so I'm phasing out the paper stuff. I still rely on some of the designs and I still use it to fill out a secondary table if we have more players, though.

lupus: glad to give ideas!

jherazob: ;)

mbdeyes: I understand, still you can have some good inspiration from paper terrain stuff...keep it up!! My problem is the painting: painting minies is already a big feat for me, I simply couldn't think of painting terrain, that's why I opted for printed terrain. I do like it in the end.

Looking at all those interior shots of the paper terrain, I was getting a huge olde-schoole XCom vibe... :D
