Really hope it achieves your desired outcome of knocking some heads into line and breaking the old 'Infinity is too expensive" line that some many people pull out.

Tx!

I'm really hopping to get more FLGS to start supporting INFINITY with this low cost and easy to make scenery.
Stores always have die hard fans willing to give some hours to build terrain.
With the forth coming set of plans all they will need to do is buy cardboard and wood glue!

Cheers!

My usual response to the Infinity is too expensive is that pretty much ANY tabletop game as a $500 minimum buy-in. With GW games, it's $100 for rules and codex, at least $400 in minis and no terrain to get started. Privateer Press is better, with a $50 rulebook, about $300 in minis, and the remaining $150 in terrain and other miscellany like focus tokens. Infinity is a FREE rulebook, $100 in minis, and $400 in terrain.

After all, how much does it cost to buy a PS4 and a couple games? $500.

I'm done for the weekend. Other plans will follow next week.
Cheers!

@section 9 : Sure... but some people don't want to pay 4 times more for scenery than the cost of the army. So I told them what if you could play INFINITY for just 100$ and 30-40$ of scenery. They said SOLD! were do I sign. Cheapest games around! ;-)

Its raining, change of plans

Building Module 1A

• Step 1 : Cut one 3" band (walls) and one 3,25 band (roof, floor)
Image

• Step 2 : Use the Xacto to trace the etching marks and the cut marks (forget the pencil - saves time!)
Image

• Step 3 : Cut, cut, cut.... and cut. Did i say cut?

I am now the proud owner of two more modules: (WIP)

SAFETY FIRST :
1/8" chip board is thick. Some of you may be tempted to try to cut it with one pass by applying a huge amount of force. That is the best recipe to end up in the hospital with a deep wound. I have seen this happen in design school. Its hugly, lots of blood fast and you end up with stiches + an unsuable hand for a few weeks.

I 2nd that I've lost about 25% of the range of movement in my left index finger due to a cut that went through the tendons; sustained why making terrain in my younger days.

If you can manage it always cut away from yourself or ensure that when cutting back towards yourself that you're direction of travel will finish askew your abdomen. I have seen too many injuries that would have been avoided if the person doing the cutting thought about where the knife/saw/axe was going to end up if they slipped or exerted more pressure than needed.

And after scaring everyone, change tune to positive:
Just cut the same place multiple times, with minimal pressure. It will work like magic, you repeat and repeat and then it's just cut. Always try soft and multiple times, increase pressure as experience dictates. It's also less tiresome and normally the first cuts will quickly guide the following ones. Soft touch can be applied to many other tools, like sanding or powertools (here just make sure there is no kickback or loss of control, and let the tool work, maybe try higher speeds once you tested low ones).
Hmm... maybe we could collect a set of tips about all tools. :didactic:
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

LOL! Yes of course. I have been doing this for 25+ years without any injury to report.

Other TIPs:
- Change/refresh the blade regularly. Nothing worse than cutting with a dull blade.
- Once the cuts are done some of the edges may be fuzzy. Use the nail of your thumb to make passes on the fuzzy edges to push them back to normal.
- When cutting the 1/8" wide slots its better to make them slightly thinner then larger. You will get a tighter fit of the pieces.
- Etching: You can either do two light passes with the blade or one heavy.

• Step 4 - Dry brushing
Use a large brush. Remove excess paint on the brush with a tissue paper.
Image

• Step 5 - Stripping, lettering
Use clear acetate and blue poster gum to position pieces. Apply paint.

Print font you like. Cut out the letter in clear acetate.

Also, if you're cutting cardboard, doing one shallow cut on the other side might help reduce accidental tearing.

I note a pile of off-cuts in one of the photos. Any plans to use some of them for scatter pieces-- crates and the like? Waste not, want not.

Safety, yes. Sharp blades ( I use a whetstone to keep the blades sharper longer ) and good lighting are a must. And on a no slip surface of some sort.. I'm wondering if a utility knife or a B handled Ex-acto might be better for cutting the chipboard, since they are sturdier blades. At least for the major cuts.

One of the reasons I'm not publishing more plans is that I'm debugging the system as I go along. For example the first design of 1-level staircase turned out to be too long (5 steps) if someone decided to do a door on the long panel. So I adapted the design to allow that (4 steps) :

I've decided to publish all the plans in a single PDF document similar to what was done for YAMS. Sorry to make you wait.

Marc,

You know your 1/10 more famous than you were a week or so ago right?

Your thread over on the official forums has gotten some air time on the most recent 0-12 podcast. Didn't quite give out your forum name (not sure why since they clearly had the thread open at the time) but still well worth the coverage. Clearly shows how people appreciate the trouble you're going too; not only for your local META/FLGS but for the community a whole by offering your work up in such a readily digestible and easy to follow way with the plans you have being offering thus far.

Have another hearty well done that man for me good sir.

P.S. you might want to contact Tom or Kip over at 0-12 to let them know you're intending on presenting your plans in full later that would be most welcomed I believe.
