No Signature Banners?

by Guges » July 16th, 2014, 3:27 am

Seems like this forum doesn't allow sig banners. That seemed to be an integral part of the culture on the "official" forums and would love to see that functionality included here.

It's one of the choices we made when Data Sphere was created. We felt like the forums would be a lot easier on the eye without the myriad of images that were allowed on the CB forums.

But if enough people want it, we'll look into it. But don't expect half-page-long sigs, though.

Don't worry, i'll just add two tiny 10K x 10K photos of the moon, not much

But now seriously, the fact that CB kindly provides us with things like this

is enough to consider it. And where else are we gonna say something about a list?

Half page sigs would be a little egregious. The CB forum allowed unlimited 780x110 banners.

I would love to see us be able to do single 780x110 banners. Maybe we should start a poll?

Ill put a vote in for no banners. They took up too much space on the infinity forums, and made things look cluttered.

Well, I can see that some banners are really ennoying, but the old forum had the option to either disable a specific persons banner (if someone really exxagerated) or disable all banners (if you really dislike banners at all). Maybe something like that would be possible here, too?
Or a maximum banner hight would do it, too.

I really don't want you guys to change your project into something else and I totally get that you wanne follow your own style, but I always enjoyed the cool / funny / creative banners "over there" :)

The fact that you can disable them in your user options makes me hope that they're turned on, if you don't want them you can make that happen only for you.

Seems like banners with an option to disable would be the way to go to make the most people happy.

I hope something like this would be doable easily enough.

Definitely needs dimension limits.

Oh please no banners, or at least keep them small. People use that space to put billboard size visual monstrosities that dominate a post more than the content. I'm all for waving the flag for personal expression, but the majority were/are just bad. They make scanning posts needlessly difficult.

Speaking of noise, please disable globally the "sent with my" which goes in the post bodies. I don't mind configurable signatures so everyone can see or hide at will, but not the nonsense that even polutes the search results.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

I don't mind sig banners so I'm all for them. Set up a max size so you don't get those half-page long ones (and whoever does those is already cruising for a bruising) and it should be fine.

This x 10.

People often include useful links in their signatures to blogs and useful posts, I don't feel we should have to make the decision to turn off sigs in order to avoid pages being cluttered by garish banners.

I vote no banners.

I voted for no banners and I'll keep my stance.
I'd be OK with limited-size banners if they were kept to the sigs (so anyone can turn them off with one option), but then again, that turns off all the other information as well.

Re: No Signature Banners?

I do not like banners, but that's just my personal opinion. While I enjoy some of them where they appear, and some really gave me a hearty laugh, I find them annoying in longer threads, where the same banners appear after every contribution - one line of text, five banners, another line, two more banners, a written like, another banner torrent, then, suddenly, text without banners, but with some utterly pointless army list that contributes nothing to the topic. Meh.

If it comes to a poll, you'll probably find me in the "no banners" or in the "one small banner" camp. Or halfway between the two.

Re: No Signature Banners?

Two things to consider:

  • You can set your account to not show signatures. This kills all banners even if they allowed billboard-sized ones
  • phpBB can be set to limit the maximum size of images in a signature, and if i'm not mistaken, the number, so even if enabled they could be set to, say, the ones issued by CB for ITS, plus one more the same size

So, turning them on with limits, and setting "show signatures" as off by default for all new accounts should be a good compromise

If you have new accounts default to "show signatures" being off, it'll never get turned on except by advanced users.

I'm voting "whatever" because I've already set my profile to hide banners.

If you do enable signatures/banners, make it clear to everyone where you can turn them off.

The official forums had banners?

I never saw them. I didn't show sigs on most of the forums I was on, either (yes, I still had one. Didn't mean I had to look at anyone else's though. :P)

My view on sig banners is not dissimilar to the view espoused by the captain on the topic of the saying of grace on that woefully overrated space cowboy show.
"Only if I can hear it". Or in my case, "only if I can see it.".

If you enable them, allow me the option to do a virtual fingers in ears "la-la-la" I don't care 'do not show sig banners'.

And your point is?

You don't have to look at mine, either.

As to the "forced to see crap" thing?
There is always an option to have the account killed and to leave the board. I've burned bridges before - and I don't particularly care if there ISN'T an internet forum for the game. :p
