Scarecrow's Tohaa

by Scarecrow » May 18th, 2013, 12:33 am

My first model painted in quite a while. Hoping to get more of these guys done over the next couple of weeks. I have no delusions about these being awesome paint jobs like Maru's or Magno's, etc, but i'm happy with it.

Really nice job, very neat brushwork!

Think the skin tone looks good, and contrasts nicely with the colour of the armour.

Nice to see a bit of attention put on the base as well, an area often overlooked!

Thanks for the feedback.

Just to calrify regarding the quality, im justing aiming for a quick and simple paintjob given that im not a painting guru. Ive also only got minimal time to paint the models, so trying to keep things to about 1.5-2 hours max per model.

Essentially the paintjob is prime, basecoat whole mini with airbrush in a Dark Seagreen/Black mix, then paint armor panels green grey, and highlight them with bonewhite. The dark grey just gets a pretty weak highlight of straight dark seagreen, except the gun gets harsher highlights and yellow glow. Buckles are mechrite orange, with a mechrite orange/sun yellow mix. The skin on this test model was done too many times for me to remember exactly :(, so im just going to have to wing it now

how a bout a Black & white chelenge ??
this will show you why minis don't Pop instade poo - there is rely 1 error you make - but is "invisible" as long as colors are involved
get mini - paint B/W - you will c this error - as i c him without changing your photo to grey scale :D

Thanks for the tips Maru.

I know that the highlighting isn't the best, nor is it realistic, i just chose to edge highlight as a way to bring everything out as quickly as i could.

I would try a black & white challenge, but unfortunately i dont have the time, or the skill to try.

ye nothing bad about it
but - this tech lack something
and that something is final touch on yours minis - it is realy addicional 2 minutes for each of them to make them "complete"
i may present it in form of digital overpainting to visualize you the missing stage

Re: Scarecrow's Tohaa

by Maru » May 20th, 2013, 4:19 pm

so here we go :)
leady first :P
as you c i turned you photo to grey scale (this grey scale photo checks over all contrast of mini not including color contrast )
and is not so bad - just "flat" at least armor don't meld with cloths
ok look below i just add white spots in "special places" over armor and gun - this made armor to Pop up - making impression it is completly different material then cloths -0 look how much more "eye candy" it looks now
Image
below foto present 1:1 how it looks
Image

how to make that - well tip of the brush + white paint
but not to thick paint - it have to be in a state like "i will paint eyes now" so you are able to get precise dot
- and just make small dots of white in corect places
thous dots imitate rays of light that bounc of the surface
all Awesomnes of Picster Work is all about this effect

but how about backpacks ?>
exacly same descryption :) - just place white small dots in correct place
Image

Image

so what is with this Greyscale painting and B/W chelenge - well in GS it is easest way to c real contrast controary to "fake" one composed from colors
human eye is made in a way that if it is a dey it c colors but after dark it swiches back to "original" and c light contrast - all effective predators use light / shadow contrast instade of colors contrast that is actualy usable only to track red objectives (red = fruit = sugar + vitamins)
btw VS light / shadow vision a 80% natural camuflage is ineffective controary to human color vision - we may miss a elephant on mady area - wich is obviously visible as soon we change photo to grey scale
all enchanted vision devices use Grey scale ... and solders in "bad uniforms" just "shine" like a huge fireflays when thous in good one made with mind in light contrast - meld same good ad with just human eye

BTW - don't paint your car black - you just ask your selve for car crash
human eye react different to different colors - red is "fastest" information about it will travel to the brain and back to the body in below 0.06 sec - so mostly instant (it is about 30 cm in car with 60 km /h )
but what will happend if we c black car - information will travel 0.2 sec .... same car speed 2 m to react
black color got lowest priority in information network in human brain and is transfered as a last - so black object is the last that human brain will react to - this have no matter in "normal" world but if you are 120 km/h
- well count how fast you will c and react to red / green / blue car and how slow to black :P

I was not keen on the white dots on the fusiliers, maybe because they are so dark overall, but the Tohaa example which Maru has mocked up looks very good.

White dots are forthcoming :).

This guy is currently missing lots of highlights :P.

I was going to finish this guy off to the point of white dots, then do all 4 painted minis at the same time.
