Red Harvest Paints

by red harvest » June 3rd, 2016, 11:23 am

I have finally motivated myself to paint ( to completion) some of my Infinity miniatures. Here are a few of them. They are...fully painted anyway. I do take extreme close-ups with the camera's macro setting.

Halfway through the Haqq starter box. Possibly just in time for CB to release a new one.

More to come as I finish them. It takes me, on average, 10 days to paint a mini. (short periods of painting over the course of 10 days.)

Nice disguise of the tactical shit. And painting in general.

Thanks Schoon.

I did finish the Medical Nasmat. That means both are done, finally (I got them in early 2013). Final Photos

And as always, I see areas to touch up.

I won't confuse them on the table, which was part of the reason I chose the paint schemes. Cool little minis.

Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you, kind sir.

Continuing the trend of painting wee robots, here is the Janissary's tinbot. Yes, I would rather have had the 4th janissary.

Fun to paint. I'm almost done with the wee bots. Yojimbo's Crazy Koalas are all that remain. Now that I finally have some hobby time, maybe I'll get a few more minis painted this year.

Not a fan of the mini. But it's done. And there is the old Najjarun I need to paint. :S

Now a mini that I do like, a WIP of the Naga Sniper. It's for my ASA, hence the green and blue.

It's maybe 70% done.

I tried, but I just couldn't make it work. A bit above my skill grade at the moment. And I even used a color called Porcelain Doll-- A Martha Stewart Craft Paint. Ha, take that Vallejo and Citadel.

Oh do try. I think it would look great. Where I went off course, I think, was in 3 places. 1) Shading too dark on the hollows of the cheeks and under the eyebrows, 2) making the face lines/seams too dark, and 3)not 'floating' the highlights-- by floating I mean mixing with glazing compound so the highlighting seems to float over the base. It's a technique used in faux finishing things to look like marble, for example. In any case, It needs more of a satin finish than it has. Then again it is a tiny face. Only so much room to work. More research and practice needed, obviously.

Color test on the Zhanshi.
Image
Sticking close to the studio color scheme. I can paint faster when I don't need to think about what colors to use.

You're painting reds over yellow?

Other way around, yellow -- yellow-orange-- glaze over red ochre. Gives an interesting effect.

Very vivid. No way to lose that mini, eh? Takes a while to build up though. Mini is about half finished. I wanted to make sure the green would work out before proceeding onto the other Zhanshi, the ones in the Painting Challenge on the official forum.

Busy week. That time of the year. Finished one of the Zhanshi for the painting pledge on the official forum.
ImageImage
ImageImage
Colorful. I went all in on the secondary colors too, with the addition of the purple hair-- and the hair did not want to play nice. Not well sculpted hair at all. Decided to play with the porcelain complexion a bit. Interestingly, it works better when you add a dark red to it to darken it, rather than an umber. Face reminds me of some actress, but I cannot quite place it.

EDIT: new photos and better too, with the hair touched up a bit. And for grins, an extreme close-up.
Image
Has a certain oil painting quality, no? I like it.

Now to finish the male before the month's end. And the other female, but the male is part of the painting challenge so it gets priority, and then the Zuyong for the Painting contest on this forum.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas.

This finishes the Zhanshi. I think I am going to count number 3 as finished in December, since most of it was.

Next up, the rest of the Yu Jing box, including the Zuyong, which I did not finish in time for the Data-Sphere contest. :(

MoB-- Someone else said Lauren Bacall.

Lauren Bacall had a taller face... and CB doing references beyond 80s? Nah.
Unless that guy meant old Lauren Bacall. Then yes, she got a wider face.

That stick under the foot, temp support or frame to be hidden inside something?

That's because you're in California. ;) I wanted to keep that neon green that is on the older ninja minis, and the orange on the new. I don't paint things black, so I went with dark green for the base color.

MoB-- There was only one real Lauren Bacall. And she knew how to whistle. :D Leg support is temporary.

All Done.

A fun mini to paint, and possibly the best in the Red Veil box. Certainly the best of the Yu Jing minis.

Wow!

Do love that Ninja. I'm looking for motivation to string the bow for mine. Then I get to paint lots of blue-green glow effects for her to match my Imperial Service.

Thanks Schoon.

Section 9: what would you use? wire? thread? I think a very thin gauge copper wire ( like 30 gauge or smaller) might work best. That tactical bow is fragile. The lower arm broke on mine and I had to pin it back into place. A royal PITA.

Ah, the reason for posting, Tiger Hacker painted
ImageImage
ImageImage

I'll be painting the Hsien HMG next. I have to say, it is the least appealing mini in the Red Veil box, aesthetically, to me. There's just something about it. Meh. The Ninja, the Tiger and the Zuyong are all outstanding, as is the gun over the shoulder Zhanshi. Shooting Zhanshi is there, and passing wind Zhanshi is awkward looking, to my eyes.

I'd go with ~4lb monofilament fishing line. Should be thin enough, and I think you can get it in something less than 25m lengths.

I like most of that Tiger, but the white on the jump pack looks almost unfinished. Maybe push the contrast up some more, with darker shadows and brighter highlights?

Here's a blog post on doing this with string, and the Massive Voodoo people actually use human hair. I've seen somewhere people taking plastic sprue, heating it with a lighter and stretching it to form really thin strings which could also serve for this (and would be perfect for plastic minis as you could glue it very firmly with cement) but can't find it now. For any mini that'd see the table i'd go for the string though, i doubt hair or the thinned sprue will be that resistant.
