Dave H's Infinity Models

by splayedpaintbrush » March 11th, 2015, 11:48 pm

Thread title says it all really. I am just starting out with Infinity having split Op:Icestorm with a friend, I have ended up with the Panoceania models. I am not the quickest of painters (I am trying to speed up) and I don't have as much hobby time available as I once did, so updates to this thread might be few and far between.

Now that I have got my excuses ready ;) I'll start off with my first Infinity miniature, I joined the forums just in time to get it painted up for the Painting Campaign: Spring '15. If you haven't voted go do so (poll 1 & poll 2), there are some very nicely painted models in there to look at. I suspect though if you are looking in here, you've probably already voted

Still think that's rather great there!

The base is very convincing, actually. If anything could be improved, I'd say you could use a bit more highlighting on the armor. Just a thought, though. Not really necessary. Maybe a bit more accent colors?

Yep, agree with Claudius Sol. Nice and tidy and they'll look cool on the tabletop. :)

I'd recommend pushing your contrast with some edge highlighting, for example, and then pushing the shadows with near black lining between sections, maybe.

The freehand is really cool.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it is appreciated.

I agree with you there isn’t much contrast in the model, the blue armour plates do need some highlighting. I have to admit normally I would have paid the plates more attention but I have been cutting corners to speed up my painting. The blue was done with an airbrush, something I am still learning to use really, I have had it a while but have not had the time to really sit down and get proficient with it. So while an attempt was made to highlight the plates, sadly it all ended up looking more like a zenithal undercoat, if you understand what I mean. I did go back and add a small edge highlight in places but shied away from doing a good job of highlighting the plates because of time.
The black lining could be done quickly with a thinned down black wash I suppose.

The white armour plates were my nod to an accent colour, perhaps I should have painted a few more areas white?

One of the things I am guilty of that wastes a lot of hobby time is sitting and looking at the model details and wondering what colours to paint things. I have tried not to look at the various details on the model specifically so I do not do waste time like that. Maybe I should allow myself a short look and see what I could add colour-wise.

It doesn’t help that what I thought would be different looking greys have ended up looking very similar. Gun casing and gloves for example.

@Claudius Sol
Glad you like the base, I make & cast them myself so was wondering how I could paint a very flat looking base to appear interesting. To be honest I am very pleased with how the worn/chipped painted concrete look turned out. I guess it is a little ironic that the base has more contrast than the actual miniature

@ Maxvon_d
I think I spent more time painting that :pano: symbol than I did on any other element of the model lol. The numbering was easy in comparison. It took a few attempts to get the symbol as good as I could get it. So I am happy that someone has commented on the freehand. :D
I think my age is starting to take its toll on my eyes, I am sure I would have found it much easier a few years ago.

I have the remaining two O:Ice Fusiliers in the process of being airbrushed, so I shall try and make a better job of the blue armour this time round by including your suggestions.

When I mentioned accent colors, I was thinking more Red/orange/yellow to contrast the blue.

I noticed you didn't paint the "LEDs" on the model, which the icestorm and other official sources show as being red LEDs.

Color Wheel suggests an orange color for best contrast between the armor and the LEDs.

Quick (rather dodgy lol) phone pic of the 3 Op:Ice fusiliers.

Image

Tried to add more contrast, my HI for the summer challenge should be an improvement in that hopefully. More details painted, although still left a fair bit blue too. And some purply-pink LEDs. I am a little out of practice with OSL, that and painting quickly at 1am didn't help

Like that camouflage on the pants. The OSL isn't so neat, but understandable, given the circumstance. Not a bad result, but could be improved.

I can see from the detail brush work that you have the skills to pull off a really stunning result.

As has been pointed out above, painters really need to increase both contrast and color saturation when painting in "scale" to get results more pleasing to the "real world" eye.

I'd recommend doing some experimentation on a figure or two that you really don't care about, and then apply what worked.

Thanks for the critique guys, it is appreciated.

@schoon I would love to be able to experiment and get the result I want on some random mini before starting the important models. Unfortunately for me it is just a matter of not having enough time.

Finally got round to taking some pictures using something other than my phone.

Hmmm I've forgotten to update this thread for quite a while.... Oops.

We'll since painting the three Op:Ice Fusiliers I have completed an ORC Trooper.

Image

Image

Image

The ORC was finished back in May, for the Datasphere Summer Challenge: painting HI models. I started the Father Knight at the same time, but haven't had chance to finish him yet.
In fact the FK has not progressed much since this picture, just having the armour plates black lined (well blue).

More pics of the ORC on my blog here.

August saw me paint up a Pathfinder for the Autumn Painting Challenge: any Specialist model.
Again more pics on my blog here.

I think I made a good job of the base, better than the model ;)

Other than maybe more shading in the red (tricky, as always) and black (just some small touches so it doesn't appear grey)... all matches.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

You mean that spot where the black got a bit out of control on the upper arm of the cross? Add a dot of black to where the arms meet to get the lower arm to match.

I can be overly critical of myself, so maybe i just needed a more sane input to remind me ;)

I went back and may soem adjustments as Mob of Blondes suggested. Which also has probably corrected what I had missed but that Section 9 had pointed out.

I was just feeling like it was a splodge of dark paint on the tabbard, only being recognisable when holding the mini at the right angle. However i think that is just the symbol in general not being that 'bright'.

Anyway here is the current model work in progress.

Re: Dave H's Infinity Models

Hmmm I could do with some help/advice. I am struggling with the red sword. Ideally I'd have liked to have a nice red *cough* power sword *cough* but highlights are proving a problem. I either end up going pink, which wasn't my intension or end up orange. Where I was aiming for a white final highlight.

Image

So any tips on highlighting red up to white without going pink?

Unfortunately, mixing red and white makes pink. I guess it depends on how you want the highlights to look. A smoother transition may be harder than strong, thin highlights. Maybe some very thin glazes of white over the red? One of my friends regularly uses oils on his minis - maybe that route may yield the results you want.

Start with a darker red as a base, almost black and highlight with pure red. Only do edge highlights with pink or white.

You could also try something like this, I've done it with blue and green, don't know how it would look with red.

Re: Dave H's Infinity Models

When doing that sort of transition, I'll make the sword's highlights in monotone greys. Once I'm happy with the transitions, I'll use a bright red glaze (Vallejo's Bloody Red works well, I think) on the medium and darker shades. Then I'll come in with a glaze of the same bright red as before with a small touch of Ivory and glaze the remaining grey tones, but leaving whites as they are.

Though, this tends to give a more "red metal" look than a glowing effect.

If what you want is glowing, try basing it all a deep crimson (such as Vallejo Fire Red) and use successive highlights up to brighter reds until you reach the brightest non-orange, non-pink red you can find. Once that's done, use several layers of super thin white glazes in the crevices and engravings. This will give the illusion of a glowing hot metal. increasing the areas that you use the layers of white will increase the "temperature" of the glow.

Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated.

I have been busy over the last few weeks (unfortunately more with real life than hobby stuff) frantically trying to get a force together to play fully painted in a tournament tomorrow. Northern Open 3 over at Leeds.
This is the fruit of my labours:

Wish I could have entered the Aquila HMG into the painting challenge, but i'd got him base coated about a week before the start of this season; never mind.
