Thanks Vis.

Markyr, that'll be a while. But in the meantime...

More work on the contour building

I like the way the ledges are working out. There will be more.

And the final small building
Image

Going to really ramp up the strangeness for this one, since it is the last small building for the table.

Looking very nice so far! That last building looks almost like it belongs on the side of a cliff.

Thanks.

A bit more work on the building, but not much. Been busy painting some old D&D minis instead of building.
ImageImageImageImage
Don't worry about that flat roof. I'm thinking a partial second story, and of course a dome. I like the porches. They turned out well, IMHO. Ended up using a bit more filler though. Hmmm.

Very nice. As it builds up, I'm thinking my favorite feature has got to be that tall pillar on the corner! I don't know why, but it seems so full of character.

No worries. There are plans for the column. And Yes, a while since I posted here. Been painting stuff, non-Infinity stuff. But I finished this little project, a nice bit of scatter...

Cylindrical Advertising Lightbox

The Inspiration comes from this thing.
Image
Image
Start with some spice bottles. Use the Goo Gone to clean up the adhesive residue left from the labels after they are peeled off. The goal is to minimize scratching the plastic. Goo Gone, unfortunate name notwithstanding, is good stuff.
Image
Assembly for the top. Adding a reflective liner, since it is to be lighted.
Image
Cutting a hole in the top for ease of access into the interior. Not a necessary step, but it makes things much easier, especially aligning the posters.
Image
All the parts. Do note the parchment paper in the lower right. It is used as a diffuser inside the tube. It really improves the look of the thing when it is lighted.
Image
Assembled and unlighted. The one on the left has a frame, like the models shown in the first 2 photos. The one on the left does not. I am still deciding which I like better. Feel free to voice your opinion.
Image

And here it is with lights.
Image
Image
Image
Yes, that is real aluminum foil. I believe I mentioned an interest in trying to make use of it in a project. How does it look? Dented and scratched, like an outdoor piece would look? The thing I am seeing is that the darker posters look better when backlit. So I should replace the posters on the left cylinder with darker ones, or darker versions of the ones that I am using.

That is absolutely fantastic! WOW!

It's a good thing I was already sitting down!

The effect is incredibly convincing. I almost thought you made a large mock-up first! Though, I think they're a tad large, in scale. Mind you, only just a tad. It's still a very convincing piece!

Submersible LED, it is in the photo between the caps.

Claudius Sol, yes, possibly a bit large, but if you look at the one photo, the real ones are about 15 feet tall.

It has been suggested to me that framing is good when you have multiple posters like I have done, but no framing is good if you have one continuous poster. I agree. Also, I should figure out how to make it spin. Now, that would be really cool if it were one continuous poster.

Yeah, you mentioned wanting to using foil, remember the hexagonal toilets.

Some other places have them bigger. Sometimes alone, sometimes with extras inside/attached, like WC or trash container or seats.

Yep, good look as they are. Maybe some musical box mechanism?

What is Battle of the Boards?

I've already jumped in on the mini painting contest here on Data Sphere, so I am supposed to be painting minis. But y'know, Had an itch to throw something together.

And following up on something someone suggested about tic tac containers. I remember them as rectangular and made of a clear plastic -acrylic. The new ones are a slightly foggy soft plastic. They are larger too. However, I tried anyway.
Image
Hmm, the packaging looks like chrome...
Image
...So I used it as chrome. Elmer's gluestick for packaging to plastic , and superglue on the edges of the base and cap (packaging to paper)
Image
Image
Although I think I over did the chrome. I'll try again, and just paint the base a dark gray or brown, and add some greeblies. The cap, I'm thinking an overhang of sorts. I see ad stands with those. . A little overhead cover is nice when there are snipers around, eh? I'll leave the 'chrome' on the sides of the box itself. it looks nice as a trim. Adding lights to these will be more work than I want to put into them, but there is enough space that one could squeeze something in. They'll make nice scatter too.

And I want to find some more interesting posters. Beer and Travel posters, possibly with some anime themes, or something slightly twisted.

Thanks for stopping by.

Light? Easy, coin cell CR2032, LED, sticky tape or magnets to hold legs around cell. Done. Disassemble for "off" position. No resistor or soldering needed, as max current is low.

Battle thing.

The internet supplied them :) I think the search terms were Metropolis movie poster, Yuengling Bock beer poster, Elysium travel poster, cleaning products posters, and a few other terms.

Hydra wrote:Wow. It can be that simple... Consider your brain stolen...

Well, yeah. If it can be done with dice cubes, why not with spice bottles, or even pill bottles?

Anyway, an experiment here. Half a building, but the experiments are about the upper windows and about the columns that jut above the roof.
ImageImageImage
I'm going for a slightly into the future look. The windows? Clear glass? colored glass? smoked glass (if I can find something to simulate smoked glass)or frosted glass? The building will be a light beige, like bleached concrete. Perhaps with some siena accents to it. if it works, the half building can be placed with the open side against a table edge.

Oh, I switched the images, so the darker posters are frameless-- well I gave them an internal frame-- and the lighter posters are framed. I think this is the way to go

It evolves thus ;)

Material for the windows-- 2 separate products, the poly envelope and the index dividers
Image
These will make for some nice 'smoked glass'. And come to think of it, could be used for solar panels and such

Then insert them to see which looks better, the index divider material
ImageImage
Which is a matte finish. Has a frosted glass effect. Or the poly envelope material
ImageImage
Which has the look of modern glass. In this instance I prefer the latter. I think the window frames will be a brown metallic, which is a fairly common sight hereabouts.

Also made an adjustment to the doors. The major work is done, so just a few details-- like the roof, and painting. Then maybe finish the interior.

Thanks. I am liking the half-building idea.

An update. I found a good material for the tic tac ad displays
Image
The inner seals from peanut jar lids. A nice burnished look, without being too shiny. I think the next display base-- once I eat more peanuts, or my Parrots eat them, since the seals are rather smallish in size-- might get a panel or vent.

The building with all the windows ready to be finished.
ImageImageImage
They'll be permanently attached once I get the building painted, and it is ready for that. As soon as my back is well enough that I can sit and paint comfortably I get 'er done... until then it is standing and scratch-building.

A small issue with the window dividers:

They seem to be a bit flimsy looking and not really straight and true the way the rest of the building is.

Also, the second floor seems a bit warped. I'm not sure if that is an element of the picture taking process or something that is actually a problem. If it is a problem you should definitely fix it. Your overall level of quality makes errors like that really stand out.

That's because the dividers aren't finished ;) They need painting, and then I'll affix them to the plastic. It is much easier to paint before rather than after in this case.

The floor does have a slight bow to it, but it is just a placeholder-- being single layer corrugated cardboard, I have no faith in it. I will replace it with a proper floor, of the right thickness (scale dictates that it needs to be 6-7mm thick) and with some indication of a stairwell. Corrugated cardboard is decent filler, but it always needs something to keep it from warping, bowing or otherwise distorting.

Thanks for mentioning it. C&C is always welcomed.

HEH. Well as usual it is indeed C&C from me. I reread my note and realized it could be taken in a rather harsh tone. Certainly not intended that way though. >.<

But then, you being you, I'm sure you caught my intent anyway.

As usual looks awesome. Just got to point out all the small things because that's usually all there is to complain about.

No worries. Now, just to placate you ;), Here's what I was intending...
Image
Temporary floor slides right out, because having the floor fixed in place makes any kind of work on the interior a PITA.
Image
Permanent floor-- nice and level and flat-- will slide right into place when I'm ready for it, and
Image
And it'll be done. However, I will need to tidy up the cut-away, and add in the permanent floor to the first level too. I'm just going to use inserts for the walls.

Oh, the scale has the 1/2 building at 16' deep and 26.5' wide, if that matters.

As I mentioned, the half-building was an experiment, because I wanted to play around with some ideas. Well, first of all, I needed to refine the whole windows thing. ( Not a fan of the Windows. Especially the new spyware edition. ) So, here is my solution: make them modular.
Image
added a frame around the window frame to keep it straight.
Image
It slots in nicely, and no curving. :D And as a bonus
Image
I was able to add a frame to the inside as well. Something that was on the "get around to it" list. The interior needs much work, but mañana.

Here is why I was experimenting, for the objective room. Early WIP shots.
Image
Image
Image
However, I am thinking about removing the 'feet' from those columns. I'll decide after I finish the roof and maybe a second story of some sort-- since it won't always be an 'objective' room. I'll worry about the interior, well, mañana otra vez.

Other thing, other experiment.
Image
The planter, how believable is it as granite? I ask because I was thinking of facing the half-building in it, and the objective room too.
Image

Thanks for stopping by.
