Willowran's Question Thread

by Willowran » July 21st, 2014, 2:25 am

Just where i will keep ALL of my queries, so as to not tax the servers more than i need to.

So i remember GrandMaster IJWTM mentioning back in the day that "all movement in ARO is considered to be a "dodge."

In my latest game, my opponent "moved" with his Speculo impersonators in reaction to my "discover."

Now, in leu with "all movement in ARO being a 'dodge,'" my opponent rolled his PH. When he succeeded, he 'moved' 4 inches (full first mov value).

This confused me slightly, as if it were a "dodge" then shouldn't my opponent be only able to 'move' 2 inches?

Yes, he should have only moved 2" (half of his first MOV). You were, intentionally or not, cheated out of 2". :)

Yes, ANY "movement" in ARO is treated as a dodge, and ALL movement from a dodge is at HALF the FIRST mov value. If they are prone, this is halved again.

So if it's a 4-4, then they get a 2" dodge move. If it's a 6-4, they get a THREE inch move. If an 8-6, they get a 4" move (but bikes dodge at PH-6 as well).

Also worth mentioning that Dodge is not on the list of skills that are allowed for Impersonators/Camo, so the Speculo was revealed as a result of this declaration.

Yes it was.

Now, just for the sake of fair representation, my opponent's argument centered on this line in the wiki:

A figure dodging in ARO can move half of its first MOV value, or make any other Short Movement Skill that does not require a roll.

He also cited the chart of available AROs, in which "dodge" and "move" are listed as two separate options.

Does it ever explicitly say anywhere that any movement in ARO is a "dodge"?

Sure does. http://infinitythegame.wikispot.org/Dodge

'It is permissible to react with a Move, by performing a Short Movement Skill, as an ARO to Order. Any Short Movement Skill carried out in ARO is considered as a Dodge and will require a Normal or Face to Face Roll of PH against the corresponding Attribute.'

My emphasis.

Dodge and Move have be listed separately on the skills table because they're different types of skills so are in different columns.

Yes, on the same page.

It is permissible to react with a Move, by performing a Short Movement Skill, as an ARO to Order. Any Short Movement Skill carried out in ARO is considered as a Dodge and will require a Normal or Face to Face Roll of PH against the corresponding Attribute.

So what is the wiki referring to when it says "any other short movement skill"? If every ARO move is a dodge, how can there be "any other short movement skill" for the wiki to refer to?

Dodge is not a movement skill. It just happens that any movement in ARO (be that moving, going prone - or, for those units with the skills, Climbing Plus or Super jump) is dependent on a successful dodge.

So with Operation: Icestorm releasing a precursor to N3 rules, which rules are "legal" in ITS, or will it be "either or" depending entirely on the judge.

IE: New camo rules, or old ones.

As an extension of this, what about old/new profiles? Until the new profile is "officially updated," could a person build a force using the future loadout? IE: MSR units are said to cost 7 points less.

ITS 2014 should continue with 2nd edition, then once we get N3 fully released I'm expecting a couple months for learning/practice before ITS 2015 starts up using N3.
