Laser Cut Card Buildings

by Lampyridae » February 10th, 2014, 8:13 am

Since the great Data Purge of early 2014, LCC's droolsome pics of his new Infinity-styled buildings were lost. I present the link to LCC's FB page, where he has begun the next building with ramps, based on the early prototype we saw. It looks really awesome.

Looks great. I'm really looking forward to see all the other things that LCC will bring for their SciFi range.

Thanks for recreating this thread guys - I really appreciate it. I've been hectically busy with Real Life so a few things have fallen through the cracks :)

Here is the rough cut of the monorail train - and I mean really rough.

Image

This cut was just to see how the models interact with the train and to identify any problem points.

So a couple of questions:

1) There is a platform that the train sits on... you can see models standing on it front and rear. Do they need to be able to stand on the sides?

2) we are designing this for an elevated track to fit in with the train station but for the Infinity campaign is it rather needed to be on the ground?

Any other comments would be welcome

I think that for the campaign the wagons can be accessed at same level (rails lower than the rest, like in modern stations) or with small jump (ground level rails). I don't remember anything about having to climb.

About walking around the wagon, you can look at the template from Infinity download section, under Markers, if that is what you want to implement. It's basically a box with a door in the one side and a seat in the other, and a console to the side. No plataforms around, and the back one is part of the next wagon.

BUT not everything has to be the same to the millimetre. If you ask me, the official design is pretty meh, double wide trains are bad for aerodynamic reasons... and all the cargo is in the open too... it's beyond explanation... other than "let's make this silly thing". Yours at least look armoured and slow, so aerodynamics matter less. It looks more plausible for what it's supposed to do.

Your rail is fine, if assembled without columns it could be used flat on the table. Maybe figure a way so columns can be sloted from below when needed?

There is no requirement that the train be at ground level but it wouldn't really make sense for it not to be - certainly not in a servicing station like Paradiso implies. There's some art in the book that I can scan to you that shows the station. The train itself is an actual train with proper cars and not crates stacked on a flatbed trailer behind it.

Just to give you an idea of how falling damage in Infinity works, you basically take a damage roll where the damage is the height in cm. So a 20cm fall is a 20 or less on a D20... XD It has amusing and painful consequences. It's quite hilarious to see a deadly trooper coming for the kill to scale a wall and break their ankle on the other side.

Love the Ghosts of Mars look for the train!

Lets just for shits and giggles say 1inch or 2.5 cm's in the old Infinity = roughly 1 Meter in IRL so yeah I don't know about you but I've certainly hury myself falling roughly the height of a free standing 2 1/2 story house. I've also gone down hard while in battle dress and kit march gear.

The falling damage is a little rough but its not crazy unrealistic.

As for the train its awesome and don't change it to be more like the one from the book its just so wank. Its not like your the only one working on a train either why have 4 or 5 manufacturers all making the same thing 'from the book' instead of what feels most likely to sell to them.
What I do: Chef by trade, arsehole by choice and I play and TO for Infinity when I'm not being either.

I've sustained a tib-fib open compound fracture from a ~3.5m fall. It happened because of a variety of reasons: soft ground, boots restricting ankle movements and cold weather causing my muscles to be more tense. Luckily I was extremely fit then so the doc was able to reconnect the bones without a pin and stuff. So yeah - this can happen.

The book train is OK but the template itself looks different anyway. Go for something you think you can sell... plus I can still see this as being 40K-ish with some application of skulls...

I like the ability to fit around the sides of the train. Makes for much more interactive scenery than just a LOS-blocking wall.

Here is the CAD render and the test cut for "urban scatter"

Steve is amazing... he did the cad files for these in about 15 minutes. There are some minor bugs to fix but i think the level of detail, given the card thickness, is incredible. They are TINY!

Should retail for $3.50

High speed maglev monorail test render

We weren't happy with the initial train design for a number of reasons. So we have started from scratch and come up with this. More Aston Martin and less tank. I think this looks substantially faster than the original one :)

I like this a lot. I think you are going away from the Paradiso train?

To be honest, and this might be a controversial view, I'm not convinced a lot of people are playing Paradiso and even those that are I think might flake out and not get to the train mission. I wonder if commercially it would make sense to design a cool looking monorail (as you seem to be) that people can use in any game, rather than a massive square, implausible train for Paradiso that looks horrible and is only needed for one mission that you might never play!

Thank you everyone for commenting on this and you especially surprize for raising this. You have put into words what we were feeling better than we could have and have confirmed that we are on the right track. We're aiming to make a cool piece of terrain that can be used if you want it to with the campaign but if not, will still look good on the table.

The main reason we are playing with a monorail system rather than maglev is actually for game utility... if it is a monorail then the train can be "out of the way" above the table top and models can move underneath it.

Having said that, someone on another forum suggested that we make the monorail support stands detachable so that the train can run on the ground too, which we will look into if and when we get that far.

Thanks again for all your feedback... we really appreciate it

Honestly, as someone who doesn't play Paridisio anyway I would much rather have a monorail because I've always picture monorail as near future tech so it looks better to me in Infinity than a ground based one.

Cha-CHING!!! Order for 2x buildings placed. I'll post the review here as soon as they arrive (weather and the South African Post Office permitting). Might be a good idea for that terrain blog that was being discussed?

I think that's one of the joys of your chosen medium: its a low investment start-up cost, so the impact of any product "failure" (lets say) isn't going to be significant in financial terms, time maybe, but even with low sales on an item you still have the pride in a new product of a great design... it isnt all about making money ateotd.... :)

plus... you never know what people will actually buy.
