Scarecrow's Nomads (Corriegdor)

by Scarecrow » August 1st, 2013, 12:39 pm

Well i had a spare Alguacil floating around here that I got as part of a prize in a tourney, so thought I give it a test paint. I also tried to do speed painting for this guy, to see what I could achieve. For 2 hours of work, I was pretty happy.

That's pretty good. That's the inverse of how I want to paint my corregidor minis. The back of the Alguacil looks pretty damn awesome.

Cheers guys. For anyone interested, colours/process as follows:

- Prime Black
- airbrush VMC Luftwaffe Uniform WW2 from the top with a wider angle
- Airbrush VMC French Mirage Blue directly from the top
- Edge highlight the black in the above two colours, with a final highlight of VGC Wolf Grey
- Red sections are GW Mechrite Red, then VGC Hot Orange and finally VGC Firey Orange
- Weapons are VMC Neutral Grey, then paint VMC Sky Grey leaving VMC Neutral Grey only in the gaps. Then 50:50 mix of VMC Sky Grey: VMC White, and final edge highlight of pure VMC White.
- Skin is VMC Flat Flesh, than VGC Fleshtone Shade Wash, with final highlights of the Flat Fleah again.
- Hair was VMC Flat Earth, then VMC Gold Brown, then VMC Flat Yellow, and finally VMC Sand Yellow.

I could possibly quicken then process by simplifying the gun painting, but i do like the way the white comes out, so i think ill leave it

To those of you who do commissions, what would be a reasonable rate to charge for this level of painting per model? I was thinking maybe $15 for a 25mm base and $20 for a 40mm based model.

Not sure ill go the commission painting route, so just figuring out if at the very least it could fund me enough to remain dollar neutral in the hobby...

Commission painters I know charge $15 an hour. If you could knock that mini out in one hour of painting, not counting drying time, then you're reasonable.

Generally, painted models go for retail on the fleabay market, and unpainted go for half retail. And that's assuming that people are going to strip the models.

Zip ties, mesh and what more? Slices of plastic tube?

Heres a couple more bases. Having a lot of fun making these. Still trying to get the hang of using weathering powders better.

Well as your full well know Scarecrow from the Aus Infinity Facebook page I picked up some cheap Nomads and I've had a crack recreating a colour scheme similar to what you have done so far but I have to say without airbrush wide and top angle highlighting they just don't look good like yours.

Ohh and a little feed back on the Moran Massai the scheme looks fine on him but for me its the face that is letter the overall job down. Maybe lightening it up just a touch might help?

I could try a further highlight, but I quite liked the skin tone... probably looks better in person than the photo suggests... i hate skin tones as it is, and this dark one was harder then i anticipated... I nearly just painted this guy with the same skin tone as the Alguacil ;)

I hate painting dark skintones, too, though it's because I gotta paint the eyes! (I normally don't paint eyes)

Maybe if I woulda painted that whole 200+model Empire army in Warhammer Fantasy I would have a better grasp of eyes... :suicide:

I'm not going straight from the bottle; nor using just that particular colour which might be why your not seeing the same results. I'm sure Scarecrow is the same.

Scarecrows work is leaps ahead of mine though but you can see which bits and pieces I liked about his speed painting and thought I could emulate without an airbrush.

Well, my orange is coming out kinda chunky and milky at the same time.. I've added thinner to it, and even put a piece of pewter in there so when I shake it, it gets all agitated, to no avail. You guys don't have the same problem, I'm assuming. How are you achieving such brilliant oranges?

I think the important thing is to have a darker red as a shadow colour, as it will make the orange look brighter

Definitely!

I use P3 Sanguine Base under my reds and it adds a lot of intensity to the color. If I was painting orange, I'd start with an orangy mid-red like P3's Khador Red base. (I like the P3 colors for reds and oranges, the liquid pigment helps make layering less obvious, without two-brush blending.

Been busy building real life terrain, so not a lot of hobby stuff done, but heres my latest... A nearly finished McMurrough. Still have his weapons to finish.... Also thinking i need to paint his kilt bag in White also.

Keep in mind this is a reasonably quick paint job, to get my Nomads on the table faster then ive been painting my Tohaa, so there is a fair bit of sloppy painting... That, and ive not been painting at a desk, so my hands are shaky not being able to support my elbows...
