Hacking Helper

by Dozer » February 4th, 2015, 1:28 pm

I was reading Crits Kill People and they posted a great intro to a new aid for hacking in N3 by a bloke with the name Capt Spudd.

Check it out, looks bloody awesome.

Nice - Yeah I'd have missed it due to lack of Facebook.

Guess I need to follow the Datasphere's FB feed, then...
“I'm curious, son. When has 'This might be a trap' ever stopped you?”

We also have Twitter, if you prefer.. And G+. Although the hacker helper hasn't been pushed on those channels.. FB remains the most active.

Had this program for a while now and have to say it is both immensely cool and useful!

Gives a feeling of a 'sub game' to hacking, and a nice introduction of modern smartphone tech into wargaming with both players sat selecting options on their phones. Think it fits Infinity nicely!

It's cool, but it's unusable offline (all the images are stored separately from the functional files).

I use it offline fine. Often not even a wifi connection where I play and it runs fine from the homescreen (android tab running kitkat 4.4.2 on chrome browser).

If you cache the entire page (images included), it should work just fine.

I'm not too sure on the peculiarities, but try this?

Firefox "save page as" fails to store the images. And this is not the only case in which I have seen the function fail in some way. It's buggy or pretty poor. :dejected:

But a tool like wget with parameter --page-requisites managed to save a lot more, and by opening index.html it works locally, with only minor error like missing highlight in header (link is generated by JS, which explains the issue). Manually solved by telling wget to also download the 4 PNGs. :toot:
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

Saving the site to your local files sort of works, but the image references and stylesheets may not link correctly when accessed from there.

I'm not 100% sure of the specifics of each platform, but in general you want to add a bookmark to the site while you do have Internet access. Once you do, clicking that bookmark while you're offline will load the site the way it appeared the last time you visited (as long as you haven't cleared your App Cache -- which shouldn't be an issue in Firefox, since that is cleared separately from the normal cache (at least in the desktop browser)).

If you do have any trouble getting it to load up offline after setting up a bookmark, shoot me a line on the official forums or at captainspud at gmail dot com and I'll be happy to help puzzle through it with you. :)
Check out my blog, Captain Spud Is Amazing, for updates on whatever the hell I'm doing lately.
