MASTERCLASS VOL.1 (ANGEL GIRALDEZ BOOK)

by Koni » January 27th, 2015, 5:54 pm

“If there is a date which is important to me is the October 24th of 2013. That day I decided to start a new stage in my career, a step up to become a better artist. This new goal was to release a painting book to show and teach my personal painting techniques applied to the Infinity models.”

In that moment Angel decided to start a new adventure. And now Corvus Belli is pleased to present you “Masterclass Vol.1”, the first painting book by Angel Giraldez.

Image

Ángel has matured as an artist within Corvus Belli, and his tireless work has earned him a place among the foremost professional miniature painters in the world.
This manual describes, in meticulously detailed step-by-step tutorials accompanied by hundreds of full-color pictures, how Ángel applies his technique to some truly extraordinary Infinity pieces.

With the book, you could find an exclusive model that has been totally and re-designed and re-sculpted of the special character Joan of Arc. This model follows the new PanOceania design as featured in the “Infinity. Operation: Icestorm” Battle Pack.

Enjoy it!

I somehow suspect that you will need to increase the size of the print run, just to cover all your pre-orders.

Awesome news I've been looking forward to this release. I am worried about the run size so for this pre-order I'll be placing my order directly with CB. I'd prefer to go through my LGS but with the heavy emphasis on Limited Units, I don't want to pre-order and get cut short by my LGS' distributer.

Yeah, but what's the difference between 5000 in your one print run ever and 10,000 in your one print run ever?

That there will be no 10000 print run. It seems Angel picked 5500 as limit. Some people say it relates to finances or tax laws, based in a podcast... don't ask me... I would guess that being a preorder (or like a crowdfunding, but without another third party asking for a pound of flesh)... :ok:

And now someone under the nick Giraldez said again it will be 5500 and no more, that the spirit is that and that there were studies about what to do in multiple fronts. http://infinitytheforums.com/foro/index ... ntry264897

Translation (quick review of auto one, to save time, I will fix anything later, if needed... but the original isn't good anyway, more like "phone talk"):
hello

Sorry to join so late but I have a lots of mails and also I am in Granada overseeing the production of the book.
I will try to clarify some doubts.
This book is my project, I financed, developed, implemented, promoted, etc ....
CB and Vallejo only sell the book.
So whatever decisions are my own, do not blame them because they have NO fault, I am the maximum responsible for both good and evil.
If this book is a success or failure will be for decisions I make.
This book is a dream for me, a goal, something I wanted to do forever.
I have been offered financial assistance and make a kickstater, indigogo, etc ... But I said no.
I want this book to have the spirit of doing things without those platforms, that with work and effort dreams can be fullfilled, I spent many years saving to be able to finance it alone.
I trust this project 100% and I put a lot of dedication into it.
12 years ago when I decided to become a painter of minis no one trusted me, called me crazy, where do you expect to end by painting minis, spent years and many painters were telling me anything but nice ... hard years ... But what I did was gather all those negative and convert them to positive comments.
On the subject of language, as they did a study and found that it was a risky decision, was the most difficult decision, I feel sorry :(.
Notice that I am not a company, I am a painter of miniatures publishing his first book.
The issue of limited edition is similar, after and study, I tell you that at the beginning many people did not trust in the project.
The end result is that demand exceeded supply.
The theme of preorders, what happened is that many stores have put the book before the official date.
The book is trying to do a fair distribution among all dealers, stores, etc ...
And the Spanish market has its copies.
In less than 2 days I have already placed the 5500 books, this Monday Infinity {sic, should be CB} will have a few copies in their shop online.
Vallejo has to tell me exactly how many they got left.

And to increase the print run, no, I will not do because I said 5500, and doing more doesn't fit the spirit of the book

Many of you will agree or disagree with some of those decisions, sorry
regards
Angel

He forgot to say CB puts the "lead". Which means he had to bought rights, etc, or CB did some other kind of deal.

I've talked to Angel, personally, one-to-one, concerning his book. He ordered 5500 books from the printer. He's funding the entire project himself. He had to take out a loan to do so. 5500 copies is the limit to which he can afford.

The reason he wants to be the sole source of money for the project is so that he has complete control over the direction of it. He wants it to be for the hobbyists.

So negotiate such condition with any investor.

A local painter took around two decades to finish a portrait, from first photo session to delivery. He was always "not fully happy" so he kept doing changes.

I didn't ask too much into the personal details of the loan, as that get's rather invasive rather quick.

This has been in the works for over a year and he's had several friends and associates inform him of what he can do. I'll trust he's made a good decision regarding that loan.

Ah, I'd thought this was a funded-by-CB thing, who could have afforded a 10k print run without too much trouble (I assume).

Most people would make that assumption (I, myself, did until Angel told me otherwise).
No worries, mate.

I think CB could've afforded much more than just 10k. Though, they'd be feeling the investment for a bit.

Vallejo seems to be involved too. For some value of involved. After the official statement, not money; but maybe they could had been, should Angel wanted, as they have published multiple things already it would not be new to them.

Vallejo and CB are only involved for PR and Distribution. Beyond that and the actual Printing being done by DIA CASH in Spain, Angel has done everything, from what I know. I think maybe Carlos helped out with some typesetting?

by Mob of Blondes » January 30th, 2015, 10:56 pm

"Are only" because Angel wanted so, but it could had been differently, as I said you can get total control if the other party agrees in the negotiation. CB agreed about a miniature after all (so sculptor, brand link, casting, etc), not just PR and Distribution. It seems others offered help, maybe AV, maybe more from CB, maybe some other third parties. In the Spanish forums, some wonder if in the end too much pride is somewhat getting in the way. And I tend to agree, if you are not doing it for the money but for sharing your work, just do no promises about limits or reruns and see if you can do another later, once financial issue is solved and if there is enough demand. Well, at least if the idea was to share the work with many, many people. :ok:

The clusterfuck of shop/distributor comunications is also not helping. You can see the uncertainity about dates in multiple forums, shops accepting orders early and so on. FLGS is pretty much confused with the release; when I asked, they mixed this with a restocking of the Infinity Art Book and so far haven't told me anything else. If this is just a collection of the tutorials hosted at Facebook, with no or minimum extras beyond the miniature... I wonder why I even asked. :pennsive:

PS: well, maybe Angel casted and packaged all the 5500. :v:

There has certainly been a fair share of issues with the release. Though, I'd sooner attribute these issues to the various distributors rather than Angel. Angel seems like he set out the release plan very meticulously. Stores that started selling pre-release copies (AHEM WARSTORE AHEM) early pretty much ruined how the process was meant to happen. Once warstore started selling their copies, other stores were inclined, financially, to follow suit. This all resulting in a clusterf*** of conflicting information, especially since warstore used images intended for distributors, and not images intended for the general public. That's where the confusion started.

Short story: thewarstore ruined it for everyone.

I've been very dissatisfied with Neal's company, of late, so take my words with a touch of salt. Pepper to taste.

Surely no blame on Angel, only how the commercial selling has been handle.
Warstore (or other sellers) is a part of the problem, the other is the lacking of information on the official store, I mean almost all copies have been given to other sellers and only few for theirself.
Then when lot of players wanted to buy a copy found problem with pre-order button and after few minutes the "out of stock" message.
Therefore I think most people were upset.

As customer my feedback would be negative

Of course I'm not discussing the number of the copies released or the method of selling (i.e. Kickstarter or whatever), everything was pretty clear before the preorder therefore is fine ;)

Through Fantization? They came out on Angel's page this morning and said they'd failed to limit the number of pre-orders in their webstore. They were trying to source more copies from CB, but weren't hopeful.

@ Blind Sniper
Thanks I'll give them a shout.

I put in me pre-order through Meeplemart, they are based in Toronto, Canada pretty close to Ottawa (...only 4-5 hours drive at 120 km/h - us Canadians are an odd bunch). I put in my pre-order first thing in the morning and I got an e-mail around 1900 hrs saying they canned my order due ot lack of supply.

Wow, this is worst than don't preorder at all!

Anyhow I hope you can still find a copy even if it would be more expensive.

Looks like they are out of stock.

I hope I find a copy as well - I'm new to the airbrush and because everything is so bloody close- not really, it's hard to show up at the Cons where he runs his tutorials.

I'm not miffed at Giraldez, I just hope that if the book does well he changes his mind on the limited one time one print run. It would also be nice if CB would bring out the Joan mini as a bootleg in the future. Awe well...

Dozer, if you can afford it, I'd recommend going to GenCon and attending some of his classes there. You can also just stalk Angel at the Corvus Belli booth, like I did. You learn a lot. I mean... A lot!
