Did my first game of Horizon Wars yesterday. We did a 25 point game which is the largest battle. 12 units per side on a 4x4. It was fun. We didn't spot any major problems with the rules. It felt like playing a 2500 point 40K game, with flyers, without all the problems of GW/Priestly games.
My opponent was a Heavy Gear, CAV, Battletech player. He says this games rekindles the flame for him. He is buying the book and building his army for our next game.
My List : 5 Mechas (1 heavy HQ, 2 medium, 2 light) + 2 tanks (1 canon, 1 artillery), 3 troops (2 medium armour, 1 light armour infiltrators), 2 flyers (1 Bomber, 1 fighter)
If you are looking for a rules light yet engaging Mechas + Combined Arms game you should buy this book. There are no official miniatures. I used my Dropzone Commander models. Any 6mm to 10mm miniatures will do fine. There are no factions. The players customize their armies with a small budget for each Mechas and conventional troops. Its not as complicated as it sounds. Making a list takes 15 minutes.
Each unit has 2 actions tokens. Player alternate activating one unit at a time. You can keep one action token to react to the action of an enemy unit. The combat system is straight forward and easy to understand. No tables to check. The game uses d12s. You will need 7. 12 is a critical. The units loose points from their stat bar for each hit. They become less and less effective as they get damaged. It takes several hits to damage units. Even the infantry is resistant and effective.
Really enjoyed my experience. Looking forward to the next game.
