Haqqislam noob advice

by despo84 » November 18th, 2014, 8:25 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to Infinity and I've decided to go with Haqqislam because I love the models. I was hoping some of you more experienced players would give me some advice my choice of models and especially what it may be lacking i.e. what models I should consider to make a well balanced list . I don't expect anyone to write a list for me but any ideas on shortcomings or units I might not need for a small 150-200 pt list would be much appricated. Also I think my choice of Lt may be a problem as it will be obvious and draw a lot of fire. I was thinking the relgious special rule should off set a Lt kill a bit or maybe I should make a Ghulam the Lt to hide him.

I currently have;

3 x Ghulam Infantry (Rifle + Light Shotgun)
2 x Naffatun Heavy Flamethrower
1 x Haquislam - Feuerbach
1 x Hassassin Lasiqs (Viral Sniper)
1 x Hassassin Ragiks (Hacker)

My general plan for a list is to;

use the Ghulams and naffatun for cheap troops/orders.
Use the Lasiqs for sniping and doing a lot of the killing
Use the Haquislam - Feuerbach for HI and TAG killing
Use the Hassassin Ragiks (Hacker) as a compact jump unit to hack or go on killing sprees behind enemy lines using the V.Dogged rule
Use the Asawira Regiment (Spitfire) as a Lt and killy unit (also I love this model to death)

Any ideas from more experienced players would be great as my experience is mainly from guide online and watching BatReps.

Cheers

As-salamu alaikum, brother.

So, what you really need is experience - the thing you get just after you needed it ;) First of all, then - practice, practice, practice.

The models you have - it is quite a mix!

As you can see - too many for a 150pts list, too few for a 200pts. Also, it is only 8 models, 7 of which start the game on table.
That's not good. The typical advice (and a sound one, unless you're already an expert and really know better) is to start with no less then 8 Regular orders on table in a game of 200pts or more.

Now, keep in mind that 3rd edition of Infinity should get here like mother of all sandstorms within 4 to 6 weeks (officially, shipping starts on December 8th). We don't know exactly how the fine points of the game will be working after that, so any advice given now may become more or less outdated in a month or so.

That being said, your idea of using Ghulam and Naffatuns for order generation (and rear area security) is perfectly viable. Keep in mind though that Naffatun, if they can get close enough to a target, are devastatingly effective against groups of enemies - also, against targets that, due to Camouflage / ODD, are otherwise damn difficult to hit. I would also consider upgrading one of the Ghulam to Doctor (for staying power - and get him some Nasmat REM) or HMG (for real punch. In 2ed HMG is, hands down, the most universal and effective weapon around. Luckily we know in 3ed this will be balanced out).

The Azra'il Feuerbach... the figure is great, the profile not so much: Feuerbach doesn't get much Burst nor Range. Close-up, he can use his Assault Pistol, but that's a short-range solution. I'd consider using him as another, more generalist loadout - Spitfire or Panzerfaust.
At 200pts, TAGs tend to be a rare sight (unless you face Corregidor, Qapu Khalqi, or Merovingia who have access to really cheap, if second-rate TAGs) so I wouldn't count too much on finding a decent target for the Feuerbach.

Lasiq Sniper. Provided you can put enough distance between him and his target - she's an excellent man-stopper. However, everyobdy knows that, and no one's likely to volunteer into her field of fire. And Lasiq isn't very fast, so repositioning her is going to eat your Order stack pretty quickly. She'll do fine as a blocking asset, but don't count on her actually acting aggessively.

Ragik Hacker. I'd drop him to regular Ragik rifleman, that's 12pts in your pocket, and when it goes to shooting stuff, he does that exactly just as well. AD 3 deployment in 2ed is a tricky beast, and counting on landing close enough to your target yet in Total Cover (as to not get shot the moment you touch ground) can be difficult. Therefore many players deploy their Air Deployed troops as AD L2: Airborne Infiltration.

All in all, I'd say you need some actors. Some more models capable of taking the fight to the enemy. Fast moving and hard-hitting. Say, Odalisque Spitfire...?

Say, something like that:

Image Odalisque Spitfire (31|1)

Or, alternatively, you could try to cut the points and field your models as a 150pts list (not without some proxying, but oh well. Infinity crowd is proxy-firendly in general ,especially towards the new players):
Image Haqqislam | 8 models
________________________________________________________

Image Lasiq Viral (26|0)

I'd advise against purchasing any models for their stats right now - this may all change soo. Still, if you love the look of a model - don't hesitate and get it :)

wow thanks for taking the time to give me so much info. Yea I've been advised to drop the hacker by another player too. The points regarding the sniper are useful too, it seems shes more of an area denial unit than a straight up killer from your comments. I love the model :) so its good shes useful if used right.

I might also drop the Azra'il Feuerbach until I get enough enough practice to do higher point games. The lists you posted made me relaise what a points investment he and the hacker really are.

I think I might just paint them all up and wait for 3rd ed to jump in to playing, seems like a good way to start to avoid rules confusion.

Thanks again

For getting into the game, you can easily use the models you have for a nice 150 points list, which is quite close to the Operation Icestorm forces:

Image Haqqislam | 7 models

Image Naffatun HFT (12|0)
Image Naffatun HFT (12|0)
Image Ghulam Rifle (13|0)

Image Azra'il Feuerbach (41|1.5)

You have some LI, an AD trooper, an MI with some skills and equipment and an HI.
Just make sure, you get the basic rules first, and the advance from there.

Thanks Harlekin,

150 seems the best place to start. Your list is what I think I might go for except I think I will drop the Azra'il Feuerbach altogether and replace with something with a HMG or equally nasty gun. It will give me an excuse to get a new model or two :)

If you still need an excuse to get new models you're not yet into the game ;)

Anyways, just give every model you own a try for a few times to see how it fits your playstyle and what its strengths and weaknesses are. Every single unit (and loadout) has a place in the game.

Or, hopefully, will have in N3! ;) Khawarijs, for example...

On topic, though - test-field everybody you can find in the barracks (proxy, proxy, proxy)! We have a plethora of troops in Haqqislam, so this will take you many, many games.

Regarding list building philosophy - keep in mind that you need cheap troops to fuel Orders into more expensive ones. However, keep in mind that under right circumstances, your Order Monkeys will be able to tip the scales to your favour. Or simply they will be the closest guys with guns in their hands.
It's Infinity. With enough rolls, a sheer volume of rifle fire can kill anything. I once ARO killed a Lizard, and that's a fully blown Main Battle TAG in my book (well, OK, it blasted my Link Team one by one, and effectively killed me out of the game before it was down) with nothing more than rifle shots.
Bottom line - they are effective troops, just not as flashy as more expensive ones.

Haqqislam is considered to have some of the best light troops in the game. Give them some extra consideration. Some of our Light Infantry types (like Odalisques, Kaplan or Muyibs) are rather expensive, but they outweight some Medium types in other armies...

Haqqislam (like Nomads) doesn't need any "cheap" troops to fuel the expensive ones as an whole (and great) army can be fielded with every model costing between about 20 and 30 points. And in such lists, every single model can be your "Rambo" B-)

Well, I consider any model costing more than 20pts to be quite expensive... those worth more than 30pts are rather expensive, and those over 40pts are expensive like hell...! ;)

...I guess I couldn't play YJ like a buddy of mine does here - a horde of Keisotsu order monkeys plus Hac Tao and Daofei...

You could try ISS ;) Above average LI troopers, with access to expensive elite toys and cheap exploding order generators in case you want to spend some more on the toys. Vanilla only brings more options to the expensive toys.

Luckily, I still should have a year or two before it is released!

..I'll have to bring my QK, CJC and recently HB to the point by then...

You call that three armies? That counts as 2 in my book... Although in my book I also have about 5... so in your book... I don't want to think about it!

Anywho, great advice abounds as usual. I will say you have done well by getting the ghulams and the nafftun, ghulams are good solid low cost models, and Nafftuns are a must include for just about any vanilla Haqq player. The cheap order and heavy flamethrower can just be so very usefull.
