Dark Sphere, London - Narrative Slow Grow League 1

by Markyr » February 6th, 2015, 4:21 pm

London Slow Grow League - starting Tuesday 17th February 2015 @ Dark Sphere http://www.darksphere.co.uk

Format – Interactive narrative slow grow league/campaign
System – Corvus Bellie Infinity N3 ruleset (with round specific list restrictions)
Rounds – 5 fortnightly rounds / 10 weeks total (starting at 150pts building to 300pts)
Rules – Mission briefings will be published online the Friday before the next round (additional side missions may be added by direct correspondence)
Reporting – All results are to be sent to me asap after the match (win/lose/draw, score, objectives completed, victory points etc)
Matches – 1 match per round minimum (ideally on the Tuesday, but can be any time you can fit one in) – there will be a meet-up following the last round for prize/gift awards
Cost - £5 given to me to join the league (this does not include table rates – these are to be paid directly to Dark Sphere as usual) – ALL league joining fees will be put towards prize/gift support
Interest – please send the £5 via paypal to mark_g_renshaw@yahoo.com and let me know your real name, forum name, the faction you will use and if you will be going with a sectorial or vanilla force (this is locked in when the league starts) – note that on special request it may be possible to bring a mercenaries list, please contact me directly
What you need each round – Army list, models to complete your list, any playing aids (rules, templates, dice, tokens and tape measure)

Background – Following discussions within the existing Dark Sphere Infinity group there was overwhelming interest in a spiced up slow grow league, with the preference of making it into a narrative campaign. I volunteered to run the event and have written the narrative, decided missions and how the story progresses depending on game outcomes. We want this to be a really interesting league, showing off the great rules system. This has meant that the event will NOT be an official ITS league.

Scoring – A scoring system will be posted prior to the league starting. There will be separate scoring systems for a) Gameplay and b) Painting. Gameplay will be resolved from who wins and what objectives were completed. Painting will be resolved by ‘best painted’ and ‘best progress’. Painting must by Infinity models, all of a single faction (not necessarily the faction you are using in the league), with the aim of painting 150pts of models being no further progressed than primer on the start day of the league and being finished by the end meet-up.

Prize/Gift Support – We have some and it is growing. Due to some very generous companies we will have some nice prize and gift support. It will be quite well distributed – so whilst there will be a small incentive to win – everyone will get something Infinity related as either a gift or prize (so long as they continue on to the end of the league!). I can’t thank the companies enough for their generous donations – and it further support will be given throughout the event!

Prize Support Companies (in order of confirmation):
Dark Sphere
Customeeple
Systema Gaming

A slow grow is about a) having fun and meeting people, b) playing the rules and learning the game and c) getting us to actually paint something. This particular league should have something for everyone! We will sort b) at the table and c) between games. As a group of players we, and Dark Sphere, simply do not tolerate intimidation, poor sportsmanship and general nastiness. We expect that if any disagreements come up they are sorted in an amicable manner or at worse with a little chat with me. That said, any poor behaviour could result in you being removed from the league.

Round 1 - Investigations on Caballo

Today’s briefing is on the immanent joint military campaign of utmost importance to O-12. A long running investigation into weaponry forbidden by the Concilium Convention has found numerous links to illegal weapons trafficking from a Nomad enclave working from a base on Caballo.

Caballo is a small Ariadna colony planet under Nomad protectorate in the Honturia System, coordinates 14’22”N, 120’37”E. Geographically Caballo can best be described as an urbanised space rock. The planet is split into four areas; with Topside, Middleside and Bottomside populated by the Ariadnian and Tailside providing accommodation for the embassies of the other powers. Since the Ariadnian colonists first landed they have spread from their original settlements of Fort Hughes in Topside, Fort Mills in Middleside and Fort Drum in Bottomside, which have formed a continuous low level urban landscape covering a significant proportion of the planet’s surface. Due to the increasing presence of Yu Jing forces, specifically operatives of the Japanese Sectorial Army based in the XO district of Tailside, the Ariadna governors agreed to the protection offered by the Nomad fleets, providing them with a district in Topside now known as Corregir and Cavite. Further geographical information is in your campaign packs, with more detailed information being provided on a need to know basis.

The first mission in this campaign is to gain proof that illegal weaponry is being trafficked from the planet and find any information at our targeted locations that may lead to further progress with our investigation. Each targeted site will have additional objectives specific to their location which will be provided immediately prior to your departure for the mission. We expect there to be security details at each location, but not significant military presence. You will only know about your own targets and objectives. If captured the mission will be denied, there will be no negotiations for your release and you will be announced as having gone rogue.

Without proof that illegal firearms trafficking is happening on this planet, the investigation will be significantly hampered and our approach to the investigation will need to be reviewed.

Nomads and Ariadna ( :nomad: :ariadna: ) – Supplies mission represents the routine moving of weapons and files to more alternative locations.
PanO, Yu Jing, Haqqislam and Aleph ( :pano: :yujing: :haqq: :aleph: ) – Supplies mission represents obtaining proof for the O-12 Investigation.
Combined Army and Tohaa ( :ca: :tohaa: ) – Supplies mission represents disruption of armament movements and gathering samples for reverse engineering.

Points – 150pts (no retreat, no hacking, REM's can be included without a hacker or TAG)
Mission – ITS 2014 Supplies (lieutenant considered as a specialist)
Classified – 2 classified objectives (including HVT rules)
Bonus – This is campaign play and is about epic heroic actions. All heroic actions are to be reported to the TO, an additional point will be given each round to the actions picked by the TO.

Round 2 - Cavite Cartel Spearhead

The first stage of the investigation has had significant set backs. It would appear that the Nomad contingent on Caballo is either trying to clean house or the investigative force has a leak very high up in the organisation. Thankfully, whilst a significant number of our operatives were wounded or killed, a number of agents did return with vital information. Weaponry forbidden by the Concilium Convention was found at 3 different sites and a manifesto outlining part of the organisational links to illegal weapons trafficking has been noting Nomad enclave working on Caballo.

It is vital for us to gain further information on the key operatives. We will be sending you out again into Fort Hughes and Fort Drum in the Ariadna territories and a more comprehensive incursion into Cavite where a number of the organisations are based that were mentioned in the manifesto retrieved. The facilities and districts that you will be entering all have been analysed by O-12, and remarkably all have a series of jamming devices creating a nimbus zone protecting them from surveillance. Your squads will be entering into these target locations almost blind, and whilst the information will be stored on consoles - the exact locations are not known. Each targeted site will have additional objectives specific to their location which will be provided immediately prior to your departure for the mission. These targets are not simple warehouses, but completely within enemy held territory. As such you should expect there to be security details at each location and the possibility of more advanced military presence. Again, you will only know about your own targets and objectives. If captured the mission will be denied, there will be no negotiations for your release and you will be announced as having gone rogue.

The level of evidence that we have obtained to date is far less than we anticipated. To resolve this arms issue will require far more information - the contacts and logistics information that you are being sent to retrieve are vital for the success of the operation!

Nomads and Ariadna ( :nomad: :ariadna: ) – Nimbus Zone mission represents the removal of back-up systems due to concern of a number of targeted covert operation attaches recently experienced.
PanO, Yu Jing, Haqqislam and Aleph ( :pano: :yujing: :haqq: :aleph: ) – Nimbus Zone mission represents obtaining names, locations, supply routes and shipping logs for the O-12 Investigation and the removal of jamming devices to allow surveillance to resume.
Combined Army and Tohaa ( :ca: :tohaa: ) – Nimbus Zone mission represents the removal of jamming devices which will effect the TO camouflage technology of their spies penetrating deeper into the Nomad territories.

Points – 175pts including 5xp Spec Ops
Mission – N3 Scenario 4: Nimbus Zone (lieutenant considered as a specialist)
Classified – 1 classified objectives (including HVT rules)
Bonus – This is campaign play and is about epic heroic actions. All heroic actions are to be reported to the TO, an additional point will be given each round to the actions picked by the TO.

Round 3 - Turning Tide

The investigation is making very slow progress and 0-12 have been caught unaware. Nomad forces, along with their unknowing Ariadnian allies, have managed to hide the majority of their arms trading enterprises. Joint Force Investigation operatives lie dead, or worse captured, throughout the territories.

One of the Nomad shadow commanders has had enough of the 'coincidence' of the recent incursions that have been turned aside and is concerned at what the insurgents are looking for. Knowing what is at stake, sizable task forces are gathered in Cavite and given their instructions for a bold mission - to sweep through the territories gaining control of the communications networks to block any transmissions and to ideally find out what all the recent attacks have been for. For once there is simply no time to torture the answers from the recent captives.

Franz 'Mouse' Castelle is sat with his Wildcat squad mates in a dingy warehouse full of veteran operatives. A fight breaks out on the far side of the warehouse, a purple haired woman causing a scuffle with some Kazaks which stops as soon as it starts due to the main doors opening and a dark figure entering.

Shadow Commander Miguel Lima walks up to the makeshift stage and speaks in a quite, stern voice that somehow manages to travel throughout the large room - "Troops. You don't need to know what has led to you being here - you just need to know what your here to do! Your mission is to protect your Vortex operatives, they know what needs to be done and will be leading you for this mission. Go." He turns and walks out - leaving a quiet room.

"Where were we then sweetness" shouts a man - all eyes in the room turn to see the purple haired girl surrounded by five Kazaks. In a heartbeat she stamps forward stabbing her stiletto heal into his crotch and turns to walk off. One of the Kazaks draws a hunting knife and the rest advance on her as the assailant screams on the floor. A Kazak goes to grab the girl who grabs his hand, snaps some fingers and wrenches him to intercept the knife swinging towards her in his shoulder. She then lashes out with two kicks knocking out two more attackers, leaps over the stabbed assailant and into the arms of the shocked knife-man. She slams her forehead into his nose repeatedly, at least 10 times, leaving a bloodied mess as the man drops dead to the floor. Casually she turns and leaves the warehouse.

"Mouse, what the hell was that?" says his number 2.

"Vortex - Kitty, you may remember her from last tour" says Franz, "lovely girl, but doesn't like attention - at least her brother isn't arou..."

Five shots ring out and two tall dark armoured shapes with white skull-masks are standing over the Kazaks with smoking pistols.

Franz grabs his coat and walks towards the exit "spoke too soon. Her brother Blitz and his esse Longshot - stay away from them - great in a fight, cheats at cards, bad at drinking and more trouble than they're worth"

Nomads and Ariadna ( :nomad: :ariadna: ) – Seize the Antennas mission represents attacking a number of joint investigation operations bases to gain control of the local communications (closest antenna to deployment zone), find out what the joint operations intelligence has found about Nomad activities (central antenna) and to implant a virus into the joint operations systems (furthest antenna)
PanO, Yu Jing, Haqqislam and Aleph ( :pano: :yujing: :haqq: :aleph: ) – Seize the Antennas mission represents protecting a number of joint investigation operations bases, sending the names, locations, supply routes and shipping logs to O-12 (closest antenna to deployment zone), upload the latest renewed surveillance to 0-12 (central antenna) and to analyse what military capacity the Nomads and have in the system (furthest antenna)
Combined Army and Tohaa ( :ca: :tohaa: ) – Seize the Antennas mission represents hacking into the planetary communications systems networks (closest antenna to deployment zone), hacking into the planetary military systems (central antenna) and to delete all information found about the Combined and Tohaa sightings in the system (furthest antenna).

Points – 200pts including 7xp Spec Ops
Mission – ITS 2015 - Seize the Antennas (lieutenant NOT considered as a specialist)
Classified – 1 classified objectives (including HVT rules)
Bonus – This is campaign play and is about epic heroic actions. All heroic actions are to be reported to the TO, an additional point will be given each round to the actions picked by the TO.

Round 4 - Who's Hunting Who?

The investigation is continuing to make very slow progress and the information uploaded to O-12 has been compromised. All named contacts of the Cavite Cartel have been found to have been terminated and our only hope now for bringing justice to those involved in the weapon trading is via a coordinated assault on the storage locations noted in the retrieved manifests.

During the last mission a number of operatives were able to not only transmit the information gathered in the first stages of the investigation, but were able to get the surveillance remotes back online. Latest intelligence has shown increased activity at 7 key locations - which will be the basis of the assault.

Whilst we have no reason to expect organised, prepared resistance - these are military facilities that are being targeted, so expect well armed security units.

This could be our last chance to catch them red handed. We want these locations secured for specialist investigators to take over.
...........................................................................................................................................

In a large disused warehouse in Cavite ...

Franz 'Mouse' Castelle is sat at a thrown together bar in a dingy warehouse. Almost empty as there is still half an hour until the meeting he is joined by a slight girl with shocking purple hair. "Hey Kitty, congratulations on the mission - good to know your brother and his thugs are good for something! What'ya drinking, they're on me this time."

Kitty lithely leaps onto the stool next to the grizzled Wildcat and signals for a beer. "You look like hell Mouse, your too old to be messing around with the boys around here - with your record you should be running things on a quiet ship near the silk routes. What are you really up to?" The room slowly starts filling with soldiers including a most of the Wildcat contingent. "At least you've trained those kids to turn up to school on time".

"It's more complicated than you know Kitty.." Franz growls and stops as all the barn doors are opened by hulking armoured suits and the remaining soldiers run in to to catch the briefing.

Shadow Commander Miguel Lima walks up to the makeshift stage and speaks over the nervous murmur in the room - "Troops. As can tell, things have escalated. Thanks to your hard work we were able to filter the information going to O-12 - more than that, thanks to 3 of our teams we hacked into our oppressors systems and know that they are preparing to assault a number of our warehouses! What they don't know is that these locations are actually our training facilities and you will all be there to meet them - with a little extra support...". 2 Iguana Tag's and 8 Gecko Units enter through the doors blocking almost all external light. "Your mission is to destroy these insurgents and to protect our assets at each location - whilst we have moved all our supplies, each location will have an intelligence officer - they can't be taken. Get to it!" - He turns and walks out - leaving a quiet room overshadowed by the ominous Tag presence.

"Well Kitty, I was hoping to tell you before the meeting. It's not just the Vortex I train, and I'm here to look after my own assets" he says nodding discreetly towards the giant figures. " best of luck Kitty, keep safe and try and see me before this is all over".

As Franz goes to stand he is pressed firmly back into his seat by a large masked figure - "This guy bothering you sis?"

"Blitz, one day your going to get yourself killed - try making sure it's not today" says Kitty, sliding of her seat taking an offered beer from a Wildcat next to her, a contact card from another and walking through the forming crowd.

"Walk away" growls Franz. Blitz replies "not a chance as he lets go of the Franz, kicks the legs out from one Wildcat and and breaks his stool over the others head.

Turning back to Franz he hears a knife slide from a scabbard to his rear, spinning around he sees his potential attacker fly over his head and smash into the drinks behind the bar and Longshot enters from the shadows.

Blitz walks towards Franz who has still not moved from his seat, "stay away from my sis - got it you useless fossil! And I'll leave you with a reminderaahh". The two Intruders hang 4m up in the air, lifted each by an arm with their knives rattling on the floor. The Iguana operator lowers her arms and the armoured figures are put back to their feet and then forced to the floor.

Franz flicks open Blitz's skull mask and stares into his face "You always were too rash even when training, it's a shame you haven't learnt to be more observant yet. "If you don't remember me, then ask Kitty who I am. If you ever pull a weapon on me again - I will kill you." He gets up pressing on Blitz's shoulder and the rest of the troops leave carrying their unconscious squad mates.

"Who was that prick?" asks Longshot rubbing his wrist where he had just been lifted. "I'm not certain, but things around here just got a lot more dangerous" replies Blitz, "only 5 people know about my shoulder, including you and Kitty, and the others I thought were all dead - I need to speak to Kitty. Get your kit and the boys, we have a mission to do and we'll sort this out when we get back."

Nomads and Ariadna ( :nomad: :ariadna: ) – Quadrant Control mission represents ambushing a number of joint force investigation assaults on training facilites to better understand the nature of the O-12 mission
PanO, Yu Jing, Haqqislam and Aleph ( :pano: :yujing: :haqq: :aleph: ) – Quadrant Control mission represents gaining control over a number of weapons starage facilities to allow detailed O-12 investigation

Round 5 - Endgame

The investigation on the Cavite Cartel is not going according to our plans and as such O-12 have started to restructure their resourcing and are planning on removing assets from the planet. A final operation, code named ‘Endgame’ will take place across the planet. The locations chosen have been taken from detailed analysis of the evidence found in the previous missions – unfortunately this means that rather than having specific targets each team will have a number of objectives to make the most of the resources we still have.

Each operation will likely met with military level resistance, and it would be fair to say we are unlikely to have the element of surprise. For this missions we will be issuing a deck of kill cards to each unit to familiarise you with key targets – they are to be taken dead or alive (preferred).

This is our last chance. Don’t fail O-12.
................................................................................................................

In a dingy bar on deep in the slums of Cavite ...

Franz 'Mouse' Castelle drains the rest of his beer and slides the bottle with force along the counter top smashing against the wall with the shards falling in the bin below. “I’ll see you soon Kitty, you know where to find us when this is all over. You can even bring your brother and his pets.” He sighs and walks towards the exit.

Blitz and Longshot walk into the room and are eased to the side of the door by the Mobile Brigada doormen, letting Franz through – without him sparing them even a glance. “Who the hell does he think he is anyway – arrogant s.o.b” said Longshot.

A petite brunette thrusts him against the wall with a hand to his chest – “you've learnt nothing about manners since I hung you to dry the other week I see, fool. Mouse is more than you know and you still haven’t figured it out. How many people go to meetings with Gecko escorts or a bar with a full pain-train of Brigada bodyguard?”

She lets go and a pack of cards falls to the floor. “Extra mission briefing, you’re 4 of clubs, wanted and likely on an O-12 hit list now – try not to die big-man” she purrs following Mouse out of the bar”.

Kitty lithely leaps off her stool and passes a beer to each of the Intruders. "Making friends Longshot? You two always piss off the wrong people. I warned you to keep quiet about Mouse and you now piss off one of his favourites – Luna trained with me, she’s Vortex”.
Blitz flicks through the cards, handing them in order to Longshot and Kitty – “she’s right, we’re all here, names, units, everything – it even has all our vitals. Longshot as 4, me as Jack and Kitty as Queen of clubs – Lupe as Ace of hearts…your lady friend is queen of hearts – hahaha, at least they have a sense of humour! Shadow Commander Miguel Lima is Ace of clubs, those Ariadnian dogs seem to be lumped into diamonds – though some cards seem to be missing.”

“Shows who’s the real bosses around here esse!” replies Longshot taking a long swig of his beer, “Kitty, I never knew you had these – you hide them amazingly well - splu” he stops as he recoils from her slap.

“Kitty, why did you want us here anyway? We have a fight to get ready for – some JSA are meant to be targeting one of the drop points and we need to be ready to welcome them!”

“After this mission we are off planet. We have a new home ship from now, new contracts and new allegiances. Shadow Commander Lima may be in over his head and I’ve got us a good deal. Mouse pulled some strings and got us a good deal.”

“Pulled some strings – I don’t need no help from some bent-double, washed-up has-been – who the hell is this fool Kitty, just tell us” rasps Blitz, anger barely held in check.

There is a thud on the exit door from the last leaving Brigada, as he turns and walks out – coat trailing – a card is pinned to the board with a hunting knife. “Evidently he’s the Ace of Spades”, she indicates to the card – empty but for the word Mouse and a poor hand sketch of the Wildcat that had just left”

Blitz - “Oh no. What have we got ourselves into”

Nomads and Ariadna ( :nomad: :ariadna: )– Highly Classified mission represents an alpha strike against key O-12 investigators, systems and key JFI personal
PanO, Yu Jing, Haqqislam and Aleph ( :pano: :yujing: :haqq: :aleph: ) – Highly Classified mission represents the arrest mission for key Cartel operatives, evidence and corrupt officials
Combined Army and Tohaa ( :ca: :tohaa: ) – Highly Classified mission represents the final stage of the alien research project prior to increased aggression in the system

Classified – 1 (chosen) classified objectives (including HVT rules)
Bonus – This is campaign play and is about epic heroic actions. All heroic actions are to be reported to the TO, an additional point will be given each round to the actions picked by the TO.

Conclusion

"Good Evening Citizens of Caballo, this is Hank Smirkov reporting for CTV. Our planet has been rocked over the last 24hrs as a number of skirmishes between rival factions have erupted across all cities. The planet has been put strict curfew and is being enforced by the Aleph and Nomad military forces. The government have requested all diplomatic envoys are to meet in the capital and send all non-vital personnel back to their orbiting assets...

"... we have a new report coming in. It appears that a number of high level O-12 investigators have been found dead on the planet - though it has yet to be confirmed if this is linked with the disturbances noted over the last day. O-12 have released a report stating that the curfew will need to remain in place at least until the diplomatic delegate meeting has been held."

"In these troubled times, all of us here at CTV would like to remind everyone to stay at home, do not go out on the streets, and we will keep you updated. I've been Hank Smirkov, and you have all been fantastic, good night Caballo."
...............................................................................................................................................................

Kitty, Blitz and Longshot are hurriedly packing their packs in their 6 person dorm room. The door splinter inwards under the impact of a Gecko foot. A full link of Mobile Brigada charge past the retreating Gecko, quickly snapping the necks of the other inhabitants. Blitz and Longshot go for their sidearms as Kitty grabs their arms - stopping them from their futile action.

"Kitty - plans have changed" says Franz 'Mouse' Castelle, "I'm sorry for the show, but you must come with me now. We may have succeeded in our missions here, but this is only the start - things are about to get very difficult. We, including you reprobates, need to get out of here."

Blitz steps forward "what the hell is happening, why kill our guys you crazy bast.." He silences as a gun appears past Franz's shoulder and Luna eases in the room .."..wait, wait - what is happening, this whole operation has been crazy".

Franz pushes the gun down "all I can say is that you are in over your heads, you need some help, and if you agree to follow my orders then you'll have it. If not then I'll leave you for the O-12 storm that is about to hit this world. I'm taking my ships and I'm going to the next place that needs me and my troops - I won't ask again, follow or stay, we won't kill you - but I can't promise about those that are on their way here now!" He clasps Kitty's hand, sighs and turns away "I wish it wasn't this way, not so early" passing through the door followed by Luna and the Mobile Brigadas.

Gun shots can be heard from a few corridors away - "Crap - Kitty, do we have any options" says Blitz. "No guys, when Mouse is around it's best to do as ordered. I don't know what his part is, but he wants us safe - but for what? Whilst it might be good for us in the short term, only he knows what it looks like in the longer term. But by the sound of it - staying here will not help me get to old age!"

"Longshot - lock and load - looks like we're following your Queen of Hearts" says Blitz as he rigs a booby trap, picks up his bag and follows Kitty down the corridor towards the waiting Geckos.

Slow Grow Final Scores:
1 Rob (Corregidor :nomad: ) - 45/51 and 2 bonus points for cinematic gameplay and best of the slow grow painting comp
2 Chris (Aleph :aleph: ) - 36/51 and 1 bonus point for cinematic gameplay
3 Tim (Nomads :nomad: ) - 35/51 and 1 bonus point for cinematic gameplay
4 Mark (Corregidor :nomad: ) - 31/51 and 2 bonus points for cinematic gameplay and 2nd best of the slow grow painting comp
5 Luis (Nomads :nomad: )
6 Stuart (Ariadna :ariadna: )
7 Ryan (Steel Phalanx :aleph: )
8 Luke (PanO :pano: )
9 Gabor (Shas :ca: )
10 Paul (Ariadna :ariadna: )
11 Alex (Ariadna :ariadna: )
12 Matt (JSA :yujing: )
13 Eduardo (JSA :yujing: )
14 Stevie (Corregidor :nomad: )
15 Alexander (MAF :ca: )

To add a little to the above:
Rob played 5 very tight games managing to get good wins in them all and only dropping 6 points over the whole 10 week period! He also won the painting part by default as my stuff isn't great and no one else entered (and he does a nice job on the stuff he paints!)

Chris is a relative newcomer and was known throughout the slow-grow as warning players how inexperienced he was before pulling out an impressive win. If I have learnt 1 thing from the slow grow - it is to always bring your a-game, otherwise a sneaky sneaky unknown will come and take your crown!

Tim came with some reasonably risky lists, but managed to pull out the wins by focusing on the missions at hand and consistently grabbing high scores in often very closely contested games. Got a little reality check from Eduardo in the middle of the tournament, but came back strong.

Luke possibly had the most painful game in league with a particularly malicious Rob pointing out any tactical mistakes with brutal efficiency.

Matt, Eduardo, Stevie and Alexander seemed to have had the rough end of the stick in their games. Having played 3/4 I can honestly say that a roll or 2 different could lead to very different results. Matt's ability to hold a corner of the table in his last match, and my inability to roll my forward observe rolls, kept me out of the top 3 - so Matt will pick his prize last tonight (only joking  )

There is a special award for sportsmanship - going to Stevie. Whilst I have heard nothing but good things about any of our players - a number of people have noted Stevie was a total gent throughout, helpful and generally a great opponent. This has elevated his pick position. To show how much this is appreciated in our group Stevie will go from 14th pick to 6th. Congratulations and please keep it up!

Final note on prizes - whilst not 'normal' for a slow grow league, I wanted to try and push this one as far as possible and went to a number of companies asking if they would have interest in prize support. I would like to thank our prize/participation sponsors for the event - I was truly touched by how generous you were and everyone went off with some great items - as well as memories from the league. Reviews will be posted of all items, but below are the companies that I managed to agree something with:

http://www.systemagaming.com/ - They provided some terrain items from their new Futura City range to my order for the league including an FCB-one with banners and a garden.
http://www.microartstudio.com/ - They provided some terrain blisters and token packs that greatly helped in getting a great participation prize to all involved. We were also able to reach into their miscast bins to add some great scatter to the club tables - which are already well used!
http://www.customeeple.com/ - These guys were fantastic, sending a pack with (literally) no questions asked - We got a whole range of tokens and camo-marks and silhouettes which went to faction specific prizes and participation packs.
http://www.madmechaguy.co.uk/ - He was kind enough to send us one of the original Hercules drop ships - this thing is a beast providing approximately 1/3 of a tables worth of terrain in a single item (that plays very well). Chris chose this as a start to his new table!
and of course https://www.darksphere.co.uk/ being the base of the tournament, the home to the games, the facebook page to arrange the matches and store credit for some prizes.

My final thanks goes out to CB for making this great game and the tournament players - who not only made the league challenging and enjoyable - but also managed to give a handful of intro games to passers by who were interested in getting into the hobby! Thank you all...

Re: Dark Sphere, London - Narrative Slow Grow League 1

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:11 pm

Mark has done some great work on organising this campaign and with the emphasis on it being cinematic and having some plot I wrote some short stories to go with each week. Some of the characters in Mark's intro stories come from what I wrote. I thought I'd add them on here for completeness and for people to enjoy

The Surprise Attack - Nomads Wk 1

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:12 pm

Lieutenant “Blitz” Alvarez scanned the compound, to the casual observer it was just an ordinary shipping depot. Lightly guarded by a fireteam of Alguaciles and nothing else. It was of course but today it had a special cargo. Everything about it was all need to know and he didn’t, his job was to keep everything low key and destroy any evidence they were there.

A more thorough observation of the area however would reveal a totally different story. The fact that the fireteam charged with protecting this innocuous depot was lead by none other than Lupe Balboa was the first giveaway. Not only that but there were also two Intruder Commandos hidden in the area, Lt Alvarez himself and “Longshot” Rodriguez up on the nearby roof.

Somewhere in the shadows Blitz noticed movement, he scanned through the frequencies of his multi spectral visor to try to get better image. A short affirmation told him Longshot had seen something too. A sharp sting of surprise suddenly hit him as he realised what he was seeing, there were Shasvastii outside the compound! Before he could get a warning to his comrades, a Shasvastii warrior came from the shadows and gunned down one of the Alguaciles.

Longshot needed no such warning, the hyper augmented vision of his helmet allowed him to to target the skulking Shasvastii warriors with impunity. Within the space of only a few seconds he had accounted for three of the aliens, the anti-material sniper rounds smashing through cover and alien bodies alike. Lupe guided her fireteam to collect the package from where it sat at the gatehouse of the compound awaiting the pickup, there was no way it could be allowed to fall into alien hands. With the package secure, Blitz ordered them to withdraw as quickly as possible with Longshot sharp eyes keeping watch for more Shasvastii lurking in the shadows.

There was just one more task to be completed here and that was the retrieval of the shipping manifests. The aliens hadn’t seen him yet but breaking cover to get to storage locker wasn’t an option as he’d definitely be seen. A hideous worm creature scaled the compound walls ahead of him with inhuman speed and started to rifle through the datafiles. Blitz could see it knew what it was looking for. How did the aliens know they were here, let alone why? Some questions would need to be asked when they returned to base.

“Looks like time to go to Plan B” thought Blitz to himself. Without giving the alien any more chance to find anything, he hosed the area with the underslung flamer of his combirifle. The worm let out a squeal and collapsed in a heap of burning flesh and plastic. The threat was neutralised for now, taking the shipping manifests with it. The remaining Shasvastii warrior made a futile attempt to get to the burning datafiles but the heat from his burning comrade was too intense and he let out a hiss of frustration. His work here done, Lieutenant “Blitz” Alvarez shouldered his combirifle and melted back into the shadows.

*End credits*
*Burning corpse filling background of scene*
*”Blitz” walks towards camera, slow motion, combirifle in right hand resting on shoulder*

Nomads Wk2 Prelude

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:14 pm

Blitz and Longshot sat at a table in the corner of The Decompression. The bar was a dive but it had become like a second home to them over the last few months. At the other side Lupe and the remains of her fireteam were noisily toasting their dead comrade as Pancho her pet dracomon attempted to steal their beer when they weren’t looking. The two Intruders watched absently with silent amusement
“Its the waiting that kills you really” said Blitz flipping a stack of five beermats and catching it
“No argument there man” Longshot agreed sliding a couple more mats across the table to add to the stack
“Still, we should probably make …” he paused mid sentence “Oh, shit!”
Longshot looked up and followed his gaze to the beautiful lady who just walked in. She was dressed in figure hugging black with her purple hair up in bunches. She walked with catlike grace towards the bar.
“Wow! Who the hell is she?!” exclaimed Longshot with a wolfish grin. He paused as he caught the look on his comrades face
“My kid sister” came the sullen reply
“Oh crap, so you gotta babysit her now?”
“Oh hell no!” Blitz spat “Crazy bitch can look after herself and she’s the best goddamn hacker on the payroll”
“So whats the problem then?”
“Shes fuckin’ Vortex, ya know Special Ops!” Blitz looked at his friend, a grim smile on his face “If the brass have sent her here, it means this shit just got real”

From The Skies - Nomads Wk2

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:15 pm

Catherine “Kitty” Alvarez switched on her VR Combat HUD and scanned over the map picking up the enemy positions from the sat-feed. To the west was a group of fusiliers, about fireteam size, not something she was worried about. To the north however, a Nisse sniper was camped up on top of a building with excellent firing lines across the battlefield. His multi-spectral visor would make a mockery of Lupe’s smoke grenades leaving the fireteam vulnerable. To make matters worse an Orc Trooper heavy infantry was parked at the bottom along with the legendary Lt Stephen Rao. Even with the element of surprise it was 50/50 whether Longshot could take them all down. The sniper would laugh at the odds in his gruff cocksure way of course but there was no way she was taking the risk.

Blitz had originally requested a Tomcat engineer to join them on this mission but at the last minute she had subbed him out for the Hellcat “Archangel” Lopez. She usually tried to avoid pulling rank on her brother because she knew how much he hated it but this time she was glad she had.

“Archangel inbound, gimme me the DZ”
“Affirmative Archangel, drop in at 315, 523. That’ll put you right behind them so go in hard”
“Ha! Is there any other way?”

A small jet buzzed over at low altitude, Kitty saw a small man sized object drop from the underside like a stone and disappear behind the buildings. As soon as it had gone from sight Kitty heard the distinctive “choom, choom” sound of a boarding shotgun on rapid fire. Archangel had gone to work.

“The sniper is down and bleeding but you got an Orc comin’ your way” Archangel was back on the comm
“I see him” came the voice of Longshot in a slow drawl
Up to her left Kitty saw the muzzle flare as he fired his sniper rifle once, then twice and withdraw back into cover
“Hmpf, this damn Nimbus Field spoiled the shot. I’ve winged him but he’s heading back to you Archangel”
“Yeah, I see him brother, he ain’t goin’ far”
The loud “choom, choom” of the boarding shotgun sounded again, accompanied by sporadic combirifle fire this time.
“Haha! Kick ass! He’s down and I managed to bag that mutha fucker Stephen Rao into the bargain! Sucker’s is in so many pieces right now”
“He’ll have cube backup Archangel so it won’t be the last we see of him I’m sure. You hold the others and we’ll mop up the rest of the fusiliers and clear the objectives”
“Sure thing Kitty, they ain’t goin’ nowhere fast, are ya boys?”

The Patient Hunter - Nomads Wk3

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:16 pm

Miguel “Longshot” Rodriguez jogged quietly to the top of the stairs and ducked down behind the parapet at the top of the building. Slowly he eased his sniper rifle into a firing position taking care to keep a low profile. The intel said this base was occupied by the JSA but they were hidden well in the surrounding streets and the Nomads had yet to see them. Wait, there, behind some crates, Longshot’s visor enhanced vision picked up just the topknot of a japanese trooper. Longshot quickly calculated where to aim based on where the troopers head should be, adjusted for the crosswind, steadied his breath and fired.

The stack of crates absorbed the brunt of the impact from the explosive bullet. The unfortunate Keisotsu staggered back as he was sprayed with shrapnel. He looked around, relief returned to his face as he realised he had survived. The second shot hammered straight through his throat, its explosive payload severing his head from his body.
“All clear” he muttered into the comm
“Affirmative Longshot” came the reply “Keep us covered from up there”

Longshot watched as Kittty and the alguaciles fireteam advanced across the waste outflow canal and into the warehouse ahead. There was no way he was gonna be stupid enough to hit on his friends sister but he couldn’t help watching as she pressed her lithe body up against the containers in the yard. Peeking around the corner, she saw the way was clear and jogged to cover against the next container. Her purple hair bounced when she ran as did her other assets.

The sudden revving of motorbike engines dragged Longshot back to the matter in hand. The Zond over to his left fired off its flash pulse picking out a speeding Aragato. Longshot carefully tracked the bikers movement and took the front wheel off the bike with a single shot. As the bike careened into the wall of the warehouse, another Aragato sped out from behind a building way over the other side of the battlefield. Longshot switched his aim to the new threat, gently tracking its path as it passed behind buildings. A bullet to the chest blasted the rider from his saddle leaving him in a crumpled heap on the pavement.

More flash pulse, this time from Lupe’s fireteam alerted the sniper to a pair of Haramaki Samurai rounding a corner. With little time to aim this time, Longshot tagged one then the other. The first survived the high velocity round, his armour absorbing the impact and he limped back where he had come from. The second was not so lucky, the bullet penetrated his helmets eyepiece and detonated inside his skull. The headless powered suit staggered for a second before crashing to the floor.

Longshot smiled in satisfaction, the Japanese would think twice now about coming out of cover and things were about to get a whole lot worse for them.
“Archangel incoming”
“Roger that Archangel” came the voice of Blitz over the comm “Longshot has them pinned behind the warehouse, time to gut them from the inside out”
“And thats why you bring me along Boss”

Death Is Not Always The End - Nomads Wk4

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:17 pm

Blitz poked his head around the corner, the sat feed told him the contact was just up ahead. Archangel and Reaper had jumped in and cleared the way although Archangel had been hit by a nanopulser and was in a bad way. Up ahead was a Devabot but Blitz was well out of its range so he gunned it down without even a seconds thought. Suddenly there was the loud crack of gunfire, Blitz found himself on the floor. He looked down to see the high velocity round had severed his leg, arterial blood spurted from the stump. The pain was immense and he died of shock
____________________________

He awoke with a start, his head pounding. His body felt cramped so he stretched and rolled his shoulders. “Thats odd” he thought, his shoulder had always hurt since the incident years ago but now it felt good as new. Memories came flooding back, he scrabbled at his legs in panic but they were both there. Confused he got to his feet and looked around. He looked at himself in the mirror, it was definitely his face but the scars he’d come to know over the years were no longer there.
His thoughts were interrupted when the doors crashed open as “Longshot” Rodrigues strode into the room.
“Wassup esse!“ he shouted punching him on the shoulder “We fuckin dead maan!” he laughed
The big sniper waved a sheet of paper under his nose, it was headed “KIA” and listed names which included the two of them
“Its all over Maya too, some fuckin Aleph propaganda or some shit. Say we wanted criminals and this fuckin post-human bitch Neith took us down all on her own”
“What about everyone else” the man exclaimed “Wheres Kitty? Wheres my fuckin sister?!”
“Hey, don’t get ya knickers in a twist big guy” came the sultry voice he recognised instantly “takes more than some fucked up Aleph bitch to kill me”
“Ha!” laughed Longshot “she fuckin saved both of us man, dug tha cube out ya skull with a combat blade so I hear. Wouldn’t leave till she had it” he looked sad for a moment “course that’s just hearsay on account of me being dead at the time, sorry bro”
“Nah, don’t sweat it man” the man replied “so what about Archangel, he was banged up pretty good before they got me”
Kitty gave him a look “Fuckin Archangel? The mans fuckin crazy. Hell, he was up and about before they’d taken your new body from the tank. Only reason he’s not here is he’s pissed that nanopulser ruined paint job on his helmet and is making sure its repainted properly. Sure, nanites chewed half his face off but as long as the paint looks good he’s a happy man”
“So we’re alive!” the man exclaimed “I knew going into Vortex was a good idea sis, you got fuckin serious clout with the brass I tell ya that much!”
Kitty shrugged “wasn’t me, at my pay grade I’d be lucky to get you rez’d at all, let alone in a top-a-tha line body like this one” she said poking him in the stomach
“Then who tha fuck …”
“That would be me, Blitz”
Lieutenant “Blitz” Alvarez spun around to face the new arrival
“You all know who I am” said Shadow Commander Miguel Lima “and I have one last job for you boys and girls”

The Kid - Nomads Wk5

by Anxt » April 26th, 2015, 9:19 pm

Pvt Vazquez hunkered down behind the barrier on top of a building listening to the radio chatter. Lupe had posted him up there as a lookout along with Pvt Perez, she was the squad’s forward observer. Vazquez checked the magazine on “Betty” his missile launcher, he was certain she was perfectly ready but it didn’t hurt to be certain. The radio chatter became more frantic, it seemed like something was wrong which didn’t bode well.

“We’re coming in hot and someone’s fuckin’ with the goddamn guidance” came the voice of Archangel
“I know, I know!” Kitty responded “Shit, this guy’s good!”
“You better fuckin’ sort it soon missy or we’ll drop somewhere halfway to fuckin Svalarheima!”

Vazquez peeked over the parapet to the square below. He could see the Vortex “Kitty” Alvarez crouched in a corner, her Hacking Device in full VR mode. She was obviously locked in full-on Infowar combat with a hacker somewhere out there. At that moment out of the corner of his eye Vazquez spotted something in the distance. Crouched behind a wall with his back to him was one of the Japanese, his fingers playing the telltale air-piano of an active hacker.

“Archangel” Lopez sat in the drop compartment of the small shuttle watching the drop coordinates spinning out of control. With someone hacking the shuttle there was no telling where they would land. He paused in the tirade of abuse he was hurling at “Kitty” to look over at “Raven” Romero sitting opposite. He’d have preferred to have “Reaper” and his Spitfire but instead he’d been given “Raven” to babysit. The girl was new to the Hellcats but apparently the brass needed a medic along for this one and had chosen her. He flashed her a smile and went back to shouting at the drop coordinates.

“Hey boss, I think I see your hacker” shouted Vazquez
“Well don’t just stand there with your finger up your ass, shoot the fucker!” came the rather terse response

Taking a deep breath, Vazquez steadied “Betty” on his shoulder. The angle was tight and if he screwed this up he’d need to worry more about Lupe killing him than the enemy. Easing into the shot as he’d done so many times in training Vazquez fired off a burst of two missiles. The first one sailed over the hackers head but the second impacted with the low wall he was hiding behind. The explosives took out both the wall and the man behind it spraying the area with shrapnel and body parts.

Suddenly the coordinates stabilised themselves and Archangel grinned.
“Nice work Kitty” he said into the comm
“Nothing to do with me Archangel” came the response “Vazquez turned him into paste with his missile launcher, talk about overkill” she laughed
“Ha! I’ll have to buy the kid a drink! You got us some proper coordinates then?”
“Yeah, no change from before, you guys ready?”

Archangel landed with a thump and rolled into cover, Raven landing beside him a second later and following him. Looking around he saw where the Japanese hacker had been, now all that was left was a crater and the scattered body parts of at least two people.

“Haha! Nice!” he said pointing out the mess to Raven. The Japanese had obviously been covering the drop zone so with Vazquez’s shot hitting a wide area that threat had been neutralised as well.
“Sat-comm shows a fire-team around the the other side of this building. You hold here, I’ll be back” stroking the Boarding Shotgun in his arms he said “Time to give them a shotgun enema”

Before Raven could reply Archangel was on his feet and moving around the building. The first Keisotsu was at the corner, a couple of shots left him bleeding on the floor. Archangel didn’t even pause in his stride. Rounding the next corner a few shots came back his way but were silenced as a pair of blast-mode shots shredded the three Keisotsu covering the building. The first Keisotsu groaned and tried to stand, but as the mission specs had said extreme prejudice Archangel removed his head with a point-blank shotgun blast. The last Keisotsu was around the last side of the small building, the man had obviously been watching for Raven to come from the other side and expecting his comrades to be watching his back. Realising his mistake he tried to turn to face Archangel and was rewarded with a shotgun blast to the chest.
“Area secure!” he said into the comm and ducked back into cover with a rather surprised Raven

The adrenaline was now running hot for Pvt Vazquez, this was so much different to the training simulators. He tried to calm his racing heart but it was no good.
“Raiden!” came the sudden shout from Perez
Vazquez didn’t even think, he swung “Betty” up onto his shoulder and fired in the direction his comrade was pointing. The double shot of missiles levelled the top of the building.
“Ha! I don’t think he’s walking away from that” said Perez quietly, patting him on the shoulder
Pvt Vazquez slumped down against the parapet and let out a long, rather shaky breath

“Mutha fucka stole my kill!” muttered Longshot under his breath “I’d been waiting for that Raiden to move since this battle started”
“Don’t sweat it brother, let the kid have his day” said Blitz “and besides, we’re both dead remember, best let people think it until we’re needed properly”
