Old models & their fate

by Micky » October 13th, 2014, 1:31 am

When amazing new sculpts arrive, and you can't bear to look at your crummy old models anymore (eg. new Daturazi vs old Daturazi), what do you do with your old models?

Do you put them out to pasture?
Do you sell them on ebay?
Do you build a shrine and put them on display?
Do you spraypaint them gold and turn them into trophies?
Do you build them into terrain or display boards?

I'm curious. Let's discuss!

for me it would depend on how different they are. if they look really bad against the new model then I'd probably ditch them. I wouldn't actually throw them away, just in the back of a forgotten draw.

Though how cool would it be if you could trade in you old minis for a discount on the new ones.

Hrm... well, so far I haven't had a lot of minis resculpted. Just the Zanshi, Shaolin, and arguably the Invincibles.

I keep all the old ones, either for more variety or to abuse for conversion fodder. I turned 4 old Zanshi into medics and FOs for both the Zanshi and Keisotsu, for example.

I tend to either mix new and old models for variety - especially if there are just a few sculpts available - like Janissaries, where for quite a while there were old HMG, old Rifle, and new Rifle only, or if I need a lot of the basic sculpt to field full-sized Link Teams with backup / reinforcements (my Ghulam... and almost the Algulaciles).

Otherwise, I do not buy the new sculpts at all (that's how it went with Algulaciles - I do not intend to get the new sculpts, as I have a full set of choices out of the old ones).

Occasional new sculpts doubling the roels I have already covered end up as conversions (I had the old Mr.Muscle Algulacile Hacker - the gal from the Corregidor Box ended up being converted into missile launcher. I had the old Ghulam doctor - the new one form the Haqqislam Support Box carries a Missile Launcher too nowadays!).

Bought a couple that is going to be resculpted/got a resculpt. Now I am just focussing on those that are resculpted or won't be as their design is already good and I don't buy anything that doesn't look good. That's why I haven't started Morats yet. Their Yaogats are not something I'll spend money on. Same goes for many Shasvastii models. I've run Corregidor for months without Alguaciles.
Those that did get a resculpt will stay on my shelves, as a token, showing new players the improvement. Got a couple of Akalis, Kamau, Fusilliers and a Ghulam that will probably get a resculpt.

They go to the shed of shame if I no longer play the game.
If it's just a newer sculpt of an older model, it joins the older ones. I'm well aware of supply chain issues with real-world military stuff (ex-Qie), so having a future force with differing equipment is not only believable for me, but inevitable. Models are models.
Newer, better looking models are just more likely for me to WANT to own them. Newer sculpts just for the sake of them have no purpose to me.

Some models get used as bits for conversions. The leftovers go into my crucible, where they get cast into ingots that I can use again to cast other things (I used to do bronze casting, so "white metal" is a doddle).

With all the resculpts coming (I'm a MAF player...) all the old stuff doesn't see much use.
I skipped buying multiples and converting them and use the old sculpts only if I need more than I have in new sculpts. Atm, I own 11 Dats - 4 of the new ones and 7 old ones, and even though I really like the new sculpts, I probably won't buy some more as I already spent some considerable amount of money on them.
Of course, the old sculpts really look rather misplaced besides the new ones - but at the end of the day, it still is about money to some degree.

I'm wondering about the possibilities of using old Yaogats as Vanguards and using old Suryats as Raktoraks... would only need some minor weapon modifications.

I guess there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to do so.
With some minor conversion jobs and a clever paint scheme they should fit in just right :)

Conversions and terrain is where I see my old models going. Statues make plenty of sense to be of "older" armors and with some "artistic license" on proportions to the reality.

I have sooooooo many models that have gotten honorable discharges it's hard to know what to do with them sometimes. As for now....... they patiently await their fate.

I find it is best to hold on to them so if down the road inspiration strikes I have what I need on hand and am not left going "doh, I should have never gotten rid of that old line kazak!!"

Come to think of it I should make a new terrain piece. It's a nursing home for old models. That way they can live out the rest of their days at Shady Acres Home for Retired Minis

If anyone ends up with any unwanted or spare heads/ arms from their 'crummy' original Suryats then feel free to let me know and i'll give them a good home. :) I have acquired a spare Suryat body and have a left arm from the multi-rifle blister but need a right arm/ head to finish it off.

I already had at least one (if not more ) of each of the original morat models in the range before the raktorak/ kornak were introduced so i'm arsed if i'm going to dump all those models simply to buy the newer ones, no matter how big they make them! I can already make full lists of OOP models for each of the factions i play. :)

With 6 old vanguards, 3 old dats, 7 old yaogats, 2 old suryats, 3 old rasyats, 1 old sogarat and a kurgat.... i can relate to that statement.

I guess one thread with the ideas like sending the MAS a box of cockroaches (live) is really enough...

Besides, this one deals with models that are obsoletwe because they have been resculpted. Not ones that became obsolete because they've been made utterly useless by CB's decisions regarding N3.

Oh I'm definately turning my Caskuda into some sort of memorial. I'll spraypaint it and mount it on some wood and get an inscription like "In memory of punking cheerleaders" or something.

Given the fact that the guys I play with love the zombie scenarios so much I am probably going to take a bunch of old Pan O and Ariadna and make them into zombies.

seems fitting all things considered.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd find it confusing if you were using your Yaogats as Vanguards while I was using my Yaogats as Yaogats. :glomp:

I've been toying this idea of "Battle group Omega" for my older Nomads. A mercenary group that aquired bunch of vets and obsolete tech and make them worth a damn. Joins forces with Nomads proper occasionally.
