Very true. That is why I didn't talk much about collecting aspect, instead repeating that you only need a starter and maybe a blister or two to play the game. Then I promised to paint starting force for everyone who bought a starter. This way 3 more boardgamers jumped into it.
Now it does require extra work painting but I make sure it is worth it for me too. See, I'm a bit of a narcisist, I want my miniatures to look all ooh-and-aah, but I don't have painting skills for that. So I use other people miniatures to practice :) I practiced some freehand and using glazes on new player's Caledonia. I practice OSL on another player's CA. I wonder what I could practice on next one's Aleph. I wanted weathering, but it doesn't seem right for Aleph, so maybe I'll try NMM here and there.
This way I get:
a) practice, without need to spoil my own miniatures, with my (still) average skills.
b) new players, who are more likely to jump into, if they know they don't have to paint if they don't want to,
c) brownie points for painting stuff for people for free.

I go as far as to to snipe good second hand deals on the web (I got Aleph starter basicly for half price) to lower people entry costs. Or I bring proxy miniatures, so they can test new units, before buying. Like I brought old GW minotaur for Caledonia player, and now he just bought himself his own Cameronian (that I'll get to paint :3 ). He is thinking about cateran and galwegians now...

And lo and behold, in time all of them get more interested, and bought more miniatures. And one of them found a latent passion for papercraft and printed and assembled a whole table worth of buildings, scatter and vehicles (so it's no longer me to do all the hard hobby work to get Infinity going :P ). Also got us a shiny new board, exactly 4'' by 4'', with hinges for ease of transportation (if we wanted to make some demoes out of the club).

And now I have 5 other players, and 2 gameing afternoons a week - in a provincial town of 10k people with the nearest hobby store 40 miles away... (Granted, having a boardgame club there in the first place that I could hi-jack first for rpg and then for Infinity helped a lot :) )

I am a prophet, let me tell you how this is going to end: with your friends all having well-painted forces and you still left with a pile of unpainted minis

Hah hah. I did this with Homachine when I started getting people into it and it worked out really well (for them...). It really does work though - good call!

So, warjacks are hoes and the caster is the pimp? Suddenly it all makes sense. If the pimp dies, all the hoemachines break free.

My $0,02: for some reason, Infinity resonated with a lot of my non-wargaming friends. There's 6 of us now and although a couple of them had been playing Death Squads (http://www.deathsquadsgame.com), most of them only just got into wargaming because of Infinity.

So maybe look for players in places you didn't expect to find them. :)

Very true, for now I've got one person that has some interest, figured worse case I'll make/buy some exciting terrain, paint stuff up, and just play hard to get. Show up at what stores will allow me and make people come find out what that awesome game is we're playing. Eventually I'll start actively promoting again, but for now I'll just enjoy the game.

We'll see if the "if you build it, they will come" applies. :)

:ubergeek: <-- my warcaster

To be fair though, the malifaux/homachine crowd are often gw refugees. They found something awesome outside of gw, so are more likely to try something new.

And just so it doesnt look like I made it up, I actually stole the term from the frontline gamer. He has some awesome rants when he was posting on his blog. :D

Oh geez. Sorry - I was originally going to post a link, but he's a bit of an infinity fanatic from what I understand, and posted a lot on the old cb forum. This is the link to his site.

http://thefrontlinegamer.blogspot.com/

His classic rants about gw are phenomenal, and he was pretty instrumental in my exodus from gw about two years ago (his article comparing gw to an abusive spouse was awesome). If you get a chance, take a read - it's too bad he's taken a hiatus on writing apparently.

I'm also on a mission to make my friends from my hometown to play Infinity (I live in other city right now, and I'm travelling once in a month back to "my" town). But I got lots of patience, and can take it slow.
The worst part is, that I only have one friend who bought Ariadna French starter (110pts) and it holds me down from buying new stuff for my Aleph, but then again I could also be buing another faction, for demo games (Haqq).

What should give you hope?

Every game initially started as the outsider. Even the 'giants' of 40k and WFB originally had to tear people away from playing RPGs and board games, had people look at them suspiciously, and had to move people from doing the same thing week after week.

Then the same again many years later with Warmachine and even FoW - yes people become deeply entrenched in the games they play, but you have to think that everyone had that initial spark to make them want to try something new. It's just appealing to that spark, getting them to give it a try, and the rest will just happen.

Infinity has a lot going for it, and in my mind no weaknesses - a beautiful model line up, wonderful game mechanics and also a very low entry cost. The thing that has been perceived as a weakness - the need for much terrain - can be turned to your advantage. Chances are if you have been a fan for a while you have, or at least are planning, an impressive terrain set-up.

I'm kind of in the same boat at the moment - my two regular gaming partners can't really play much these days, forcing me to hit a local club much more. But, I'm just keeping plugging away until I get more interest. I'm a full believer in the adage that reward follows effort in all parts of life, and the more effort you can make to get people to play the game, the more response you will get.

Good luck though in any case, and don't give up! :)
