Which books do I really need?

by Ghost80 » February 26th, 2015, 8:55 am

Hello everybody, I'm a newbie and I've been wondering quite a bit about the books I really need to play Infinity.
As far as I know, N3 Rule Book + Core Book are the fundamental ones, while Human Sphere and Paradiso add many options, both to the background and to the rules+miniatures. But here come my questions:

1) Have the unit profiles of HS and Paradiso been updated for N3? If so, where should I find them? I ask this last question because I've noticed that, taking as an example Achilles, he has a different point cost in the N3 Unit Profiles ENG (downloadable for free from infinitythegame.com) and in the army builder (this one also for free at infinitythegame.com), so I don't know where should I look for the right profiles.

2) I've heard about an upcoming book called Acheron Falls (summer 2015), which should update HS, both for rules and for background. Does this mean that HS is no more needed? Or Acheron Falls will just add other material, thereby leaving HS as an indispensable book? I'm asking this because, if I've to spend money for HS and see it "obliterated" this summer, I'd rather spend them for miniatures.

Well... the situation is complicated as of now.

1. Yes, there was an update to the unit profiles. A massive PDF file is available for download at the official Infinity site (Archives section). It covers all the profiles so far (and is said to cover those being currently release - with updates).
You will need this, at least untill Army 5 (the offical army builder) finally hits the net.
What is currently out there is Army 4, which is a 2ed resource, and no longer up to date.

Alternative army builders do exist (like the excellent Aleph Toolbox N3) which cover that issue, too (though there are some glitches and bugs there sometimes :().

2. Acheron Falls is said to be a Human Sphere-like expansion book, not a Human sphere replacement. However, all the rules parts of it are available for download at the Infinity site, and an update document (well, quite shabby if you ask me :() is there too. You'd need both of these, and the Paradiso rules part too.

Now, let me present you with the golden rule of Infinity:
The rules are free. You don't have to buy the books to play the game.
You buy the books primarily to get the fluff and art (which are lovely. But hardly a necessity).

The only exception is the Paradiso in its campaign part - CB has not released it for free, and doesn't intend to. You want to play the campaign, you have to buy that book.

TL:DR - my advice: skip the books for now, buy more minis :)

And yes, I have all the books, 1ed rulebook, HS, C:P, Artbook #1 and N3 core/rulebook. Just borrow them from someone in your meta and give them a read. Then you will be able to decide if that was enough, or you definitely want a hardcopy of the fluff and art sitting on your shelf!
They say there will be Heaven and the Fount of Kausar,
That there, there will be pure wine and honey and sugar
Fill up the wine cup and place it in my hand
(For) ready cash is better than a thousand credits.

I agree. I too have the books

Skip them.

Use the free rules and builders and spend your money on miniatures.

Buy books for the fluff (and the campaign rules, if you are so inclined).

Use the PDF army list, pen and paper (or virtual equivalents) until Army 5 finally gets pulled out of Development Hell. Then use Army 5.

Now, take all that money you saved by not buying the books unless you absolutely HAVE to have to fluff, and buy more minis. You know you gotta get 'em all!

Not quite, since the rules printed in Human Sphere and Paradiso aren't on that page.

Here's the Human Sphere rules PDF, the Paradiso rules PDF, and the Paradiso Campaign sheets PDF. You will need to buy Paradiso to use the campaign sheets, but this beats marking up the one in your book!

Open the treasure chest http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/downloads/ and while at it, enjoy the old gallery too http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/facciones/
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

In the end, I've bought both Human Sphere and Campaign: Paradiso: I love too much a good background and the Infinity's one is really cool. Nice pictures inside, even if I'd like to watch more miniatures (I've noticed that, in all the manuals, there are not so many illustrations of miniatures).
