In second edition close combat was very hard to pull off, so usually limited to either specialized CC assassins like Oniwabans or Speculo Killers, or to cheap fast warbands like Galwegians or Antipodes. Otherwise it was usually better to just shoot a burst in the enemy's general direction.

N3 (Infinity third edition) is fixing that a bit; I haven't tried it out yet but with increased CC, Stealth and changed Martial Arts close combat seems very deadly now and an actual option if you manage to catch an enemy at short range, like in dense terrain. I'm looking forward to seeing how Domaru turn out.

FYI if you coming to Infinity from say Warhammer, 40k or say Warmachine there is significantly less CC then what you will be used to.

CC is now as Pierzasty mentioned much more viable option than before but its still just an option not the be all and end all thing to win. In Fact quite often running into CC will lose you games because you don't have enough orders to complete objectives.

Close Combat in Infinity

by Scorch » January 4th, 2015, 9:32 pm

CC in infinity is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Sure, when it happens it can be damaging, but you will rely on guns the most.

Even ninjas carry guns in this game.

Getting into CC isn't easy. With the new rules, it looks like managing to get there will be worth the effort. Especially with models that can take advantage of Surprise Attacks.

Actually, Daturazis with their MA4, mimetism and smoke grenades are one of the nastier CC units. You also have the impersonator Speculo and CC-oriented AD Rasyat. Not to mention the new Cybermask shenanigans with an Umbra hacker.

Besides Daturatzis CA has access to Hungries. They are cheap and impetuous. In the worst case they distract your opponent, in the best case they shred some juicy models.

Just remember that EVERYONE that can see you in Infinity gets a 'charge reaction', not just those close enough to be charged.

And you gotta use cover here. failure to use cover will get your butt handed to you on a plate.

Speaking of close combat, N2 mentioned that you get a +3 to your ARM unless your oppenent had any lvls of MA or natural born warrior. Does N3 still have this rule?

It doesn't seem to exist, I haven't found it anywhere. It makes sense to me though, with their move to make CC more fast paced and brutal with any CC-focused units involved.

Infinity allows you to play with minis you like and as long as you stay within points (cost to buy and use) limits, SWC (cost to field some speciality weapons/profiles) limits and pay attention to AVA (how many your force is actually allows to have a one time) limits then you can field ALL THE PRETTY THINGS!

List is still functional and the game still plays as intended. No perfect lists no death stars and no models you will NEVER use because the profile is terrible.

You could in games between 300 to 400 points use all of those models you have outlined. Might not be a really effective list due to high cost per model and low order count but its possible. Grabbing the Combined Army: Starter Pack will be the main way to get your Umbra and it gives you a few other options to flesh out your list and make it a little less order starved.

Nice models there anyway and like I said it bags you an Umbra anyway.
