Outlaw Miniatures - WildWestExodus

by Ironclad » March 4th, 2013, 12:36 am

Hi guys, not sure if this is the place to inform you all, but as you are gamers of many different systems (probably), I guess it is :)

There is a new game on Kick starter set in the wild west called Wild West Exodus, its a cowboys and indians steampunk setting with 35mm models, there are some big players building this game such as Alessio, Battlefoam and Micro Arts Studios. Would be great to have a few more friendly hobbyists in on an additional system :)

I'm not a huge fan of over-sized minies.

I've read the rules for WWE and they're no-hum. Another fantasy style game with a pool of "magic" and a main character that causes you to group around him.
Now you have a re-roll mechanic tht has you manage during the turn instead of at the beginning of the turn, but stuff we've really seen before many times. So for me, it'd come down to sculpts, theme and fluff and this one doesn't do it fr me.

As you can see from the picture Kidtermanal, they are not a great deal bigger. I would say from this picture that they would be a mm or 2 bigger than 28mm Heroic scale. :)

The keyword being "heroic scale". Keep in mind that the Space Marine is already bigger than a standard human soldier. And as far as I'm concerned, there's only 1 mini I like in that picture...

(Rasputina. Myrmidons look horrible in general).

@Magno. Magic? There isn't any magic in WWX. I think the closest thing to magic is the Warrior Nations (indians) spirit, as they call forth the energies of the earth. I am not aware of anything else that comes close buddy.

I like the resource management that you refer to matey, It could really hamper your day if you use it wrong, or things do not pay off. hehe

There are a few abilities that make you stay near your Boss, but as you also have Underbosses and sidekicks you are able to spread your troops out in order to outflank the enemy or pick off key components.

I have to say that it was the sculpts that did it for me initially. Then I learnt that there was a comic that would support the game which would include additional scenarios as well as a story that would help release upcoming miniatures. It's been a long time since I was into comics, so this for me was a really nice surprise and a trip down memory lane. I used to really like The Punisher and X-men. Didn't really like much else.

The rules that are out at the moment are the "Charlie Rules". in about 2 weeks the Beta rules come out and then the Alpha rules will be despatched in September with everyones order. Alessio is on board to write them, so expect a quality rule set to be developed. :)

Hope this helps

Mick

@Pierzasty. Indeed they are bigger matey, but a lot of people see that as being the norm. I do not. I just like well sculpted minis, which in my mind WWX models are. :D

I have a LOT of Infinity models also and love the fact they are to scale and not at all cartoony, but I think that is what is appealing to me about the WWX stuff tbh. The Warrior Nation (Indians) are my MUST have faction as they seem so lifelike in appearance for me.

Well yeah, I don't like 32/35/3+whatever mm models. I'm so used to 28mm that anything else just feels off unless that's obvious at first glance that it's a totally different scale, like 15mm or something. Well, that and I don't dig the Wild West vibe, e.g. Malifaux's Guild looks fine on paper but I like maybe 3 minis from the whole faction.

@kidterminal, I don't want to get to philosophical but, it may be that the EotD minis are the ones that don't mix well? hehe only joking.

I have a few different ranges. Malifaux, Dystopian Legions, 40K, WHFB, WM/H and now WWX. I chose WWX because I think they look great minis and awesome detailing. With all the extra bonus free stuff that you get, I will have a new table full of Wild West terrain. :) Sometimes I think it is good to mix things up, as it allows you to experiment and try new things out.

I understand if it wasn't for you. But I wouldn't disregard them because of the models the you have now. Get them if you see the merits of them as they stand alone imho. :)

If looking terribly ugly wasn't scary enough, they give him a GATLING GUN!!!! hehe

Glad you like them Samurai. What do you normally collect?

They are releasing a few more pics tonight sometime. We have had stretch goals every $5-10k so far. We are sitting on $185,000 and we are getting info to $300,000. So hopefully a lot of great gossip. :)

---
They have just released the stretch goals for WWX and I have to say WoW :D Every $10,000 they have more free goodies for people. Gave a link below, its near the bottom of the page.

So they can't tempt you into collecting a posse Samurai? or do you just paint?

What I'd like to achieve is that your posts look like this one. Instead of five separate posts, one very neat made using Edit button ;)

To answer your question, I only collect Infinity so far, Aleph, to be precise. I travel a lot without having a permanent home so I cannot have extensive collection. Maybe by end of this year it will change.

All we need is for Stone fist to be a transformer and we are away with this one!! I think that could make for a challenging conversion for 30/30!! :D

Does anyone know if there are any plans for more heavy cavalry like stone fist? I saw some concept sketches of some naked horses (not that I see many with clothes on, except 30/30 ofc, but he needs his trousers cause he is built like a ho....... Didn't think that one through, did I?) and was wondering if in the future there would be more like him? Even if they don't have dirty great big cannons strapped to them (although I am becoming fond of ONLY seeing horses in this manner now, although it would make gypsies more dominating I feel). We could perhaps have close combat horses like unicorns. I am not sure if unicorns were respected by the native indians, I just thought as it is alternative universe, it would just be common sense? Although I think the industry is crying out for bear cavalry (Scibor do some, but they do not look like real life bear cavalry imo). On that note, I am really looking forward to seeing what is in store for wave 2 LSV's. Anyone hazard any thoughts on this? or perhaps seen any sneaky peeks?

@Cervantes,
What are you planning on getting? Are you going to play skirmish style? As I remember that lovely frilly avatar from the Infinity site (it really brings out your eyes), so I guess you are into small amounts of men. Or am I correct in thinking that this game will scale higher than the current charlie rules suggest ($1250), and be able to field larger armies in the future?

Off Topic: @Levitas,
You say that, but I bet if Bravestar the tabletop game came out, there would be a community of pizza lovers queuing up in the freezing cold in nothing but there t-shirts for it, lol :)

Cheer

The game can be played between 2 values at present. $450 and $1250 ($=pts). I heard that the game will be able to grow in scale to larger battles than this. not sure if it will be implemented straight away though. We will have to see when the Beta rules are released.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Oh, sorry to hear that. He is definitely working hard at present. I am just waiting for the Civilians update at present. Not sure what their game mechanic will be. Have you heard anything about them at all? I am hoping it is a 3rd random player in a skirmish game. Or perhaps you have to protect them in a scenario. would love to get my hands on a few of the theoretical scenarios, as it would help you think about what models you want to collect. :)

Ah, ok. So, if it wasn't clear in my original post - I have no confidence in Outlaw or the game, and so won't be backing it.

And if you're curious, the dude with the collar is Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the inspiration for my screen name.

I am sure there will be more. At least I hope so at some stage. would be really nice to fight in a populated area on a game board. I mean some games have no scenery a la 40K, others have lots a la Infinity, but no wargame that I know of has lots of random civis running around. Just thinking that your board would look pretty epic, if some Lawmen were chasing Outlaws through an area that restricted their line of sight, or reduced their shooting (every miss has to be rolled to see if it hits a civi). hehe Just a few ideas I guess. :)

I'm interested in the style and scale of the miniatures but can't shake the feeling there's an degree of "Astroturfing" going on to promote this Kickstarter. For those unaware Astroturfing are public relations campaigns that are designed to mask the sponsors of the message to give the appearance of coming from a disinterested, grassroots participant. Astroturfing is intended to give the statements the credibility of an independent entity by withholding information about the source's financial connection.

I'm seeing the same sort of posts about the Kickstarter showing up on a number of different forums all using similar language and can't help but wonder if the people making these posts are genuine or not.

Yep. We already have 2 users posting on nothing more than WWX. That's one of the reason it's getting pruned back right after KS ends.
Even if they're rabid fans of the game/genre/minis, people will ask who's paying them for it. It gives the game no credit if it needs sockpuppets to survive.

I agree with you Cervantes. I really don't care for the aesthetics of the miniatures as they do nothing but remind me of that awful Will Smith movie, Wild Wild West. I'm getting a liitle tired of kickstarters in general.

@Lampy,
I do not work for them nor even know them. I was also accused of being a sock puppet on DakkaDakka, hehe.
I am glad though that that has been rectified and have been conversing with them in kind on there forum.
I do hope that I may be able to do that here also. However, if you choose that I am not the type of person you wish to have dialogue with, I shall respect your space accordingly.

Over on DakkaDakka, there is an interesting conversation at present about the comic and the implementation thereof.
How does anyone who is interested in WWX find this idea? Looking forward to it?
I think that the comic idea is pretty fun tbh. I have always felt a bit overwhelmed at the concept of trying to get up to date bit 40K novels,
as the time investment would be HUGE! (I am dyslexic which slows things even more) Please correct me if I am wrong and you are able to keep up easily though.

A comic could be used as an aide to gain interest in a younger audience, perhaps a son/daughter quality time type of activity?
Also, as a military veteran, when I went away on ops and came back, the world didn't stand still while I was away, so you've guessed it. I was further behind! :(
In the UK there are quite a few people into gaming, so going away and coming back to a few comics isn't as daunting. Not that I am expecting my scenario to be the norm.

I have just seen, the new HH for wave 2 Enlightened! they look a whole lot better than wave 1 imho and really please with this result.
I can only hope the ones being redone for wave 1 are equally as nice. But as we say on the KS'er. In Jesse we trust.
The Enlightened, for me, are still in 4th place though. First place being Warrior Nation, 2nd place is Outlaws and 3rd place Union.

Right well after reading these post's can I just say it was due to this game I started to use forums. Find it a bit rum that because I am only posting on something that interests me that I am a sock puppet, I haven't been posting on other things because I like to read the forums and keep my opinions to myself on stuff I don't know anything about.(that's not a dig at anyone)

I do like the spirit concept in the Indian Nations set, the Union Troops look ok, the Wyatt Earp sketch looks cool. I agree with you that a comic would be great for fleshing out the background. But this game isn't grabbing me. The enlightened are giving me the Wild Wild West movie feel. That's not a good feeling. :(

Not just me then!

Personal opinion, but just seems a lil odd that this is even here. While most of us play other games, this is another skirmish game. One that doesn't even have cross over potential for Infinity. Unless you want a wild west merc.

Not taking pot shots Ironclad. But 90% of your posts are about WIld West kickstarter, so why are you on an independent Infinity forum? Just curious good sir! ;)

I was on the other Infinity forum as Broadside, as I also have LOTS of Infinity stuff atm. I was then informed that the Infinity forum had changed in January and Pyscoticstorm pointed me here. So this was in an area for kick-starters, now it is off topic, so this is off topic for Infinity? :)

Good to know! Just asking, you can never be too careful these days.. :ninja:

Nah, I think a few signs just made it look like you were a fake promotional account of some such, as you havnt posted that much Infinity stuff (on a Infinity forum).

In addition, the whole Romeo/O12 Podcast incident has left some of us...twitchy...in regards to battle foam and its affiliated business.

It's good to know about all the choices available to us in the world of mini games. Wild west is not my cup of tea but my cousin would love this so I will pass the info on to him.
Some of the models are promising though and would prob be fun to paint.
