Xenonauts - infinity-esque game

by TallonHunteR » June 25th, 2014, 1:13 am

http://www.xenonauts.com/

xenonauts is xcom re-classicfied as i call it. now, how is it like infinity you ask?

1 reaction fire(assuming you lave tus for it)
2 fireteam scale combat (starts at max 8, but you can mod it to 16)
3 cover matters, there is a block chance for firing through stuff(including team members)
4 you can move your guys in buildings(which can have multiple levels)
5 turn based
6 destructible terrain (doesnt usually factor into infinity, but the rules are there)

now, i play to try to mod xenonauts into a more infinity-esque system featuring nomads as the playable faction. or all human factions if i can get an art team together and can also make *training required" weapons and armour. the campaign map is modable (geoscape), so i play to mod that into the paradiso map. the xenonauts will become nomads, and im going to try to add tags as vehicles.

the reason im posting here is that i am hoping a few of you will want to help, in either the art or programming part.

there is no multiplayer right now, nor planned to be, so ill have to talk to the devs and see if i can get code access. but as for most of the rest its bared in .xmls

Dunno about the features of OpenXCom but at least you would be able to modify all of it.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

omg, looked at a sprite folder...individual renders for every weapon and armor configuration with massive spreads of sprites O.O, time to learn to 3d model, again T-T

I haven't played Xenonauts yet, but it's on my list. I enjoyed the original X-COM (although I always ended up dying badly when the Ethereals showed up) and have played a lot of the new XCOM. I would recommend the new XCOM to fans of Infinity as well - you will find the small squad, mandatory use of cover, and two-skills-per-order action system very familiar.

oh, my mod is on hold indefinitely. i got a reply back from the dev saying that what i was going to try to implement was so alien to the code written that im better off starting from scratch.

A part of me likes the idea of a computer game that emulates Infinity, but another part of me would rather leave Infinity as Infinity and let other games be other games. If I made a tactical combat game of any sort it would certainly show influences of Infinity, but I would also make any number of decisions differently than they chose to.

I love the new XCOM. Is this worth looking at? Looks terribly outdated in comparison, of course, but then again I'm a huge Jagged Alliance fan.
