40K 7E

by MARC C » May 13th, 2014, 7:14 pm

The 7th Edition will have books : 1x fluff (128 pages), 1x Modeling (144 pages) et 1 x rules (208 pages). (White Dwarf right column.)

Somehow that makes sense. Surprising they didn't do that before...

LOL screw you Gee Dub my moneys you will never have it again.

You screw with the lore I loved *note post tense* you setup single man stores where people are either badgered into buying or simply not allowed to buy due to idiotic closures due to manpower shortages and then you expect me to pay anywhere from from a 30% to 90% markup simply because I happen to live in Australia.

Yeah the GW screwing that Australian players get is simply gratuitous. I like a lot of the figures that GW has put out over the years but their rules have always kind of fallen short of the mark. I wish I could say that I am saddened by GW's death spiral...however they have simply viewed and treated their customers with utter contempt for far too long.

The only GW thing I buy anymore is their paints. I know most people prefer stuff from other companies like Reaper and Vallejo, but I've just always liked their paints, and never had problems with them drying out.

I am not knocking anybody who buys GW products (because I certainly have), some of their stuff is actually very cool. There is no denying that I have had fun playing many of their games (Space Hulk, Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Warhammer Fantasy and even 40K) and I know that a great many people still do. I am never going to tell anybody that playing company X's game is wrong, I am not the fun police. Personally, never had any complaints concerning GW paints. The only reason that I went with Vallejo is that they don't change their formulas, so I know that I can get the same color two years from now. Reaper and GW will find new manufacturers that cut them a better deal and suddenly mithril steel is no longer available.

Canada has not been spared either, along with New Zealand as well...unfortunate to say the least.

40k needs a total overhaul of the rules, massive injection of creativity into the lore, and to lower the price across the board.

What they have done is continually add elements to a core system that is outdated and can't handle the weight. 7th ed isn't going to fix anything, but they are not brave enough to throw it out as they have a huge library of supporting books to update. But that is what they did with 2nd ed, and in my opinion what they should do again. People are playing a game from the 80s, that is the big problem.

The lore is the same. In 7th it will be pretty much the same old recycled stuff that was in the previous editions. Emperor, heresy, only war blah blah...boring. It was exciting when I was 11, not so much now i'm in my 30s and playing in other companies worlds.

What keeps 40k going is the imagination of it's players. What crazy list can they make, or what conversion can they come up with. It still has that sandbox appeal that lets you carve out your own slice of the universe and plant a flag in it. But the architecture is archaic and in need of demolishing, much like the Imperium itself.

Complete overhauls are risky. 4E D&D got WoTC in trouble... but streamlining the game would go a long way. But that will never happen cause GW is Citadel and their real purpose is to sell miniatures. They provide rulesets only because it makes them sell more minis.

Got a quick read of it, it streamlined some of it and discombobulated some more, will I play it? yes eventually, will I buy any more GW models? no, not really. The game was my first game outside of battletech, it will always have a place in my heart, and I might break it out every now and again (like battletech), but I think I need to cut the umbilical cord. it was a fun game, and helped me with my TBI recovery (memory and logical thinking)... but honestly, it is starting to be... silly, and not in the late 80's early 90's big hair and skulls way

40k got me into tabletop, but it also jaded me really hard towards miniatures as a whole for many years. It would take a massive price drop, a major rules overhaul, and most likely another company owning the license for me to ever give them a chance again.

Same here man. I had a lot of fun years with GW, and have friends who still enjoy it. There is just this massive exodus to other systems and companies now. The choice for those that choose to look elsewhere is much greater and cheaper than when I was rolling d6s as a kid. I see more and more variety of games being played at my local stores. So 40k would really need a massive overhaul to bring those people back. It would need to be fresh and exciting again. 7th ed is not that.

40k wasn't my entry point to miniatures (but I'm older than most of my local players).
7th ed, is more like 2nd ed using 3rd ed rules.

I did play 2nd ed - but only got about 6 games of it in during its run (damn work shifts) but I don't really see what the retro appeal is about the game - but I was mainly in it for the models, and the rules came a long way down the totem pole.
