Terrakami Games - Paradiso Train

by Stormshroud » February 18th, 2014, 1:25 pm

Well my wife bought me one of these lovely trains for valentine’s day, ain't I lucky. :D

Anyway I thought I'd give you a brief review of it as a product. It looks fantastic when finished but the tolerances on it when assembling are incredibly small and almost every piece has to be filed to some degree to make it fit. This isn't technically challenging but compared to all the other MDF terrain I've assembled, which includes a lot of Sarissa precision stuff as well as Systema Gaming and 48 various Terrakami crates, was unexpected and the whole process ended up taking most of my weekend. My only other complaint would be that the hinged container clamps on the carriages are very flimsy and not up to the rigours of regular gaming, 4 struts snapped on me during assembly. I intend on finishing it off with some plasticard panels to neaten up the sides of the engines; where I left off the side struts out of personal choice.

I'd give the product 8/10 for looks, but probably a 6/10 overall.

Thought I'd also mention the associated containers. I love the range that Terrakami offer, they are my favorite of the various ranges on offer at the moment. I assembled 48 in one day and they go together brilliantly. The MDF is a little thinner than some other ranges but the fact that they are all double layered makes them nice and tough. The crates all stack across the different designs and work brilliantly on the table - nice and stable even when stacked.

I'd give them 9/10.

Thanks a lot for the review.
The tight grip of the pieces was something that was encouraged to have by the people who checked our first models. To avoid using glue as much as possible, but we will try to get a better balance between tighness and easy assembly.

Has anyone seen a painted version of this train yet? I'm very tempted to pick one up (and much prefer the look of the Terrakami one to the Bandua one)!

I'm assembling my Terrakami train at this moment. I expect to be doing a couple of articles on it for the new Data Sphere blog (once we get that up and settled, don't pin me down on a date yet). I do intend to paint it and show it off. Without the almost mandatory (so it sometimes seems) airbrush, I might add.

Suggestions on colors are welcome. I was thinking blue, but the Bandua blue train kind of put me off.

Fantastic, I look forward to seeing pics.

I'm also not a fan of the Bandua blue - I'm planning to do mine white with some blue or red detailing.

An industrial yellow kind of theme? That's what I get looking at it. Maybe some rust streaks here and there (even though it's the FUTURE and plastics and whatnot).

An Industrial rusted yellow would look great on our train. It was my first choice but I am reconsidering for a red and white pattern that is also a common one on cargo vehicles.

Those trains made me think that you can go to your local Train store to check out some of the colors and pick up some terrain at the same time. Just so you know you will be looking for "O" scale stuff.

HAHAHA ..... $2,295.00 later I'd have me a one of these.

I'm sure you can get O scale kits under $1000 but that was the first Australian based website I found and yeah I don't have that sort of hobby moneys lying around.

I think he's talking about O-Scale terrain like buildings, vending machines, etc.

I was talking about the terrain but that Train does look damn good, but not worth $2k so I am glad Terrakami is making one. But the terrain can help a lot to give your board that extra look and it is pretty amazing what you can find at the Train store. I had one near me when I was a kid and its one of the reason I got into miniatures.

Tanks, airplaines, etc in 1/48 will also fill the job. O scale means from 1/43 to 1/48. And achitecture things can be found in 1/50.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

The model RR train I want will set me back at least $1500.

There's the first $500, the rest is in the streamlined passenger cars.

Worst part for me is that I'd basically have that on a loop, blasting down the main line and interrupting traffic for the actual model RR layout!

But I still suggest taking a trawl through the Walthers catalog (or a train enthusiast's book/magazine), see what real-world decorations works for you.

Just be careful, I find the 1/50 architectural stuff is generally too small for Infinity.

Which is really funny, when people say 28mm means 1/56 or 1/55. It's by definition bigger than the models.

An oil barrel or pallet in 1/50 looks right in a diorama. Or a model carrying a 1/48 jerrycan. There is always the issue of miniatures having bases, so things using different ground levels have the visual illusion problem. But that aside, things should work. Of course, my theory is that too many people have never been never oil barrels, pallets, jerrycans or original Willys jeeps. Or they have serious perception problems. No other way to explain how using 1/35 or 1/24 items looks right to them.

I can get the playability point of view, but not the perception one (without bases).

And speaking of 1:50... someone should look at Preiser code 68290 and do a review (sorry, no money to spare).

I had The joy of playing on a train table at last weekends tournament.

What awesome terrain pieces these trains are. Sad to hear that they are so work-intensive... Was about to build a train station myself...

I'm willing to bet the Mk2 trains are better than the Mk1s reviewed by myself on the blog and other posters in this thread. Do go ahead, as you've seen yourself it's just awesome stuff to have.

And work intensive? I do like a challenge. Okay, it's not super-easy like Systema, but if you like LEGOs, you'll like this!
