Signature Banners: NOW ALLOWED!

by Arachas » August 1st, 2014, 11:09 am

Edit: though it was by the smallest of majorities, Data Sphere has voted IN FAVOR of signature images. We have set them at the very limited size of 415 x 85 pixels. Enjoy!

The Data Sphere team would love your opinion on this. Should we enable the use of images in signatures?

The size of the images will be restricted, but large enough to accommodate ITS banners.

The poll will run for a week, after which we'll make a decision based on this vote.

Thanks for offering your opinion, guys!

Voted 'yes' - but with limits. Lifestories are un-necessary; however small faction icons/achievement banners/flags etc. are fine to let you get a quick impression about the poster and who/how maybe where they play.

Can we get a third option in the poll for "I want other people to have them but I want to turn them off (choose not to see them)"?

You can turn off signatures in your control panel. Sadly, there's no option to just turn off images in sigs. You either turn off sigs entirely, or you don't.

It's not the size of the banner that matters it's how you use it ;)

I enjoy modest sig banners, including the ITS one. It's part of the Infinity forum experience for me.

Granted, now that DataSphere is no longer taking over full time it is less of a big deal to me, and I will not be upset either way.

@Arachas.. oops, I voted yes. Mainly for ITS banners, although.. since we're not going to be the to-go spot, we might as well cut our losses there.

However, you're still not allowed to make a "stop banners now!" signature banner XD

A provisional yea. Maximum height of 110 pixels, maximum size of 50kb. No GIFs. Plus the option to ignore specific ones. I'd like the option to block certain avatars too. Some are downright repulsive. Any with "skullz" for example. Totenkopf anyone? No thank you.

I recommend an ad-blocking extension for your browser then, they work nicely for that. And Totenkopf or other explicitly Nazi imagery would get deleted/punished immediately after noticing.

As it says in the OP, we'll allow for ITS banners. That's the maximum size right there.

Yes, but limited size and number of them. I've seen some doofs with something like 15-20 banners in their sig, can't even see what they wrote with all the banner crap.

When they added the ITS banner to the official forum, I was tempted to remove everything else (and I may still remove my INYLIY banner, since that is distinctly getting less and less true).

Can we make a total sig height limit in the forum software?

Is this going to be a simple majority. Seems like if 50.01% of the forum wants banners that still means half the forum doesn't like them.

Not that anyone is going to read this before voting: When voting try to keep in mind not whether you want the ability to put a banner in your sig. Think about whether you ever look at anyone else's. Realize that everyone probably is the same and then you'll see why banners aren't necessary.

If I could I'd have the signatures be limited to an H1 name line plus simple lines with links to blogs and posts.

A small text signature is a nice way of personalizing the forum. If possible restricting size and colour of the font.

A graphical banner is a scourge and should be burned and buried six feet deep.

I voted no, btw.

I voted no because as already mentioned elsewhere if the image restriction is based around the ITS banners than I don't agree with the need for them. Their a scourge on the official forums would rather not have them here at all.

Put it in text if its so important to show off your ITS pin/score/size of your junk.

I damn it's gonna be close! I'm really hoping for nó banners, they're always a distraction and take up a lot of space. If there are important links players want to refer to I'd prefer they're well-organized with their own topic, or the poster will just have to look it up or store the link on their profile.

The way it is going now, we'll probably do our best to find a middle way. 50-50 tie means there we must meet in the middle.

The poll is closed, with a really, really close result.

As Scorch said, we need to find a middle way by which we can accommodate both sides. We're going to discuss it with the team. You'll hear from us soon.
