For our next tutorial we tackle the job of making brick look real. There are alot of steps involved but it's really not hard to make this look good. So have a go and try it out for yourself.
Step 1
Base coat your brick areas with a color that most looks like brick. This was done with latex paints I had left over but the following formula should work pretty well.
2 Parts Black
6 Parts Red
4 Parts Medium Brown.
Step 2
Make a mix of the base color and black. 50/50 of each. Water it down to make a wash out of it. So be generous with the water. Paint the entire brick area with the wash and let it dry. If you didn't get an even coat go back to the places that need more and give a secind coat.
The wash should sink into all the cracks and start to give the dark tones to your brick. Allow this stage to dry thouroughly before moving on.
Step 3
Take a pastel stick and with a razor blade carefully scrape downwards into a container to make pastel powder. Alternatively if you have pigment powders these will work well too but this is a cheaper alternative.
Once you have a good amount of powder its time to apply it to the brick. Working in sections with a semi hard bristled brush begin to genrously apply the powder to the brick surface. You want to push it into all the cracks but make sure you have enough on their that is also seems to be lying on top. Here is an example.
Once this is done use your finger and in up and down swipes push the powder into all the cracks.
You will see here how that extra powder helped really fill in the cracks.
Now take a small square of damp paper towel and in the same up and down motion begin to wipe off the excess powder. Make sure you either keep changing the paper towel or keep folding it to keep as clean a suface on the paper towel as you can. It tend to get gunked up very quickly.
ou will see here that if this stage is done carfully and correctly our brick is now starting to look real. If at this stage you notice spots where the powder has not stayed in the cracks don't worry just repeat the above steps in the areas where the powder was wiped away.
We can see the brick is really starting to look cool at this point.
Step 4
You will need 3 colors for this step.
Color 1- is a 50/50 mix of Black and the Base Color
Color 2- is the base color
Color3- is a Highlighted version of the base color. I did a 50/50 mix of the base color and beige.
Paint your darkest color randomly on bricks to start representing the varying hues on a natural brick wall.
Next in the same manner as the darkest color we are now going to paint the base color on random bricks.
Lastly we take the lightest color and repeat the process.
so now we have our colors down but the painted bricks stand out a bit too much. So now it's time for......
Step 5
In this final step we are going back to applying the powder all over the brick with a semi hard brush. The only difference between this step and the previous is we do not need to use as much powder this time.
Same process
1- Apply the powder with brush
2- With your finger push it into the cracks
3- Wipe away with damp cloth
This is the final result. Once again pics suck it looks pretty damn real up close.
Well thats it. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it.
Cheers
