[Marc C's] Museum and Entertainment District

by MARC C » August 18th, 2014, 3:13 pm

I'm reposting the latest building of the Field Research Center here. The size and latest design developments made me change the nature of the project. This table will have 5 buildings only : One in the center and one in each quadrant. The interior of each will be fully playable. Both exterior and interior will provide tactical decision points. ( I will come back to the Research Center later on)

-----START OF OLD POSTS-----
So I decided since I had a river on the table best make use of it.
The [edit]MUSEUM[/edit]. 16"x16" monster building that will be placed in the middle of the table

With overhead walkway...

...this is officially the most ambitious building I have ever created! The walkway has 17 parts.

I'm in a good place with this design.
Added a pavilion on the roof. I will add two more. One on each side of the first one and at a 45° angle.

How do you get to the roof terrace? With a monumental staircase. TAG friendly!

I've recently discovered that «institutional size» scenery is well suited for Infinity. As you say architectural details do become tactical decision points.

Last night I decided that this table will have only 5 large buildings. One in the center and 1 in each quadrant. The next building in the sketching phase is an outdoor amphitheater. I'm turning this table idea into a museum and entertainment district. (I'll get back to the Field center later on).

Thank you all for the positive feedback ! ;)

Wow this is looking fantastic Marc. I think it's my personal favourite of all the stuff you have done, that staircase looks set to be the site of many intense firefights.

Very specular and inspiring!
Do you enforce wall corners and other joints? I mean is it enough to glue the walls with Elmer's glue or you somehow enforce the connections of the surfaces?

I use wood glue (yellow). The cardboard is so thick I don't need to reenforce the corners.

Oh gawd, not another thread of your awesomeness. They always make me feel guilty for actually buying terrain, when I could be making it myself like you do.

But then, I try to do so and I fail to come even close to your greatness. Which makes me glad, because I don't have to feel guilty about buying stuff anymore. ;)

Love the circular reasoning! Almost pissed my pants.

My «greatness» hit a wall yesterday. I tried doing some new elements but I got the measurements all wrong and had to throw everything into my bitz box. I'm taking a break.. and my fingers are sore.

I feel for you, Mark C.

Getting wrong with measurements is an awful thing :(

...well, off to do some cuttin'n'gluin' myself... though I'm light years behind what you do!

Wow. Awesome and inspiring as always.

I've really got to get back to my own terrain making, but other projects keep getting in the way.

The first buildings I was trying to get them done fast, fast, fast. Just a simple doodle on a napkin was necessary.

For this one I just stopped thinking about the time it will take... and its taking a lot of time but judging from the generous comments its worth it !

MARC C, are you an architect? This is superbly done. That's not even taking into consideration it being on miniature scale! Reminds me a lot of the "detail" I would see when passing through my university's architecture department.

I have a diploma in Architectural Design. But my occupation turned out to be graphic design. Doing this project does remind me of my days at University.

I shoulda known you were an architect, Marc. That's *almost* cheating!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your 'entertainment' district, since I'd love to see how well 5 larger buildings plus scatter work as a board instead of the CB-recommended 9+4+scatter.

Technically I'm a designer not an architect. Were I come from I can handle architectural projects (renovations) that are under 100,000$. Above that you need a certified architect.

Well, the staircases are so large they count as a building. So that's 5+2 = 7. ;)

Big buildings, or building elements really make for great tables. It's good to see you doing one. There is the added bonus of a quick table set up.

I dated someone in your field (also in Canada). She did the math, drew everything out, really did the heavy lifting, and the architect would just review and sign off on her work... guess who got paid more... lol...

Inside view of the concert area and the stage.
With multiple passages, doors and staircase I'm hoping to create a very dynamic combat environment
