LoS/LoF Markers Any More Ideas?

by VisOne » June 14th, 2015, 1:19 pm

Folks,

Might have brought this up before can't be sure I haven't.

However here are some great examples of interesting and clear LoS/LoF markers on bases have you seen or done anything different?

Image

I'm trying to decide how to do my QK force I'm tempted to do my 3 colour gradient like my Acontecimento Force pictured there or maybe even another 3 colour camo like my Ariadna but that Tancrede's Father Degersen is so well framed by his solid line with triangle front method.

All of the others are great too but I'm not sure about hand painting allot of shapes and the faction logos ohh god no.

Any other options I'm missing that are both effective and help frame the mini more?

I'm having to mess with my original "Front Arc" colors, because I used Cryx Bane Base and Coal Black. Apparently, CBB looks exactly like Coal Black when CBB is in a shadow, so it's too hard to see the dividing line between the arcs. Maybe Bane Highlight?

One slick thing I've seen with WarmaHordes minis was a splash of airbrushed color with a hard edge on the 180 line, feathering towards the back. I'd still need to use a brighter color for the front arc, the example I remember was Red spray on black or dark brown base rim.

I was just looking at that but it seems really really risky on a non-lipped base.

Antenocitis has some tech brass strips that are used for marking arcs (compass bars). Unfortunately, they are straight, as they are designed for the Antenocitis bases, which don't have the taper. If you were so inclined, you could figure out what curvature you needed to fit various base sized, and have some cut/etched.

Regarding etched brass, I'm less than enthusiastic about it.

I was using some (different parts, different manufacturer, different purpose) and these were pretty difficult to glue in place. First, it tends to be springy, second, it doesn't get along with superglue too well.

Paper works better for that all of my previous Haqqislam have paper LoS/LoF markers.

Image

From left to right,

1. A shot of a model with the printed sheet to show just how big the printed semi circles are. Big enough to lap completely around a model which I do for 360 degree visor models.

2. Cut out stripe brush on plain white glue onto base then affix paper strip. Line up on cutting board or other straight surface and cut off extra paper. You should only have the front or back 180 degrees marked. Once you’re happy with where it’s placed paint a wash of 50% water 50% white glue over the paper and set aside to dry.

3. Next take some black paint thin it slightly let’s say 70% paint to 30% water using this either slowly go around the edge of the paper covering cut edge or take your brush and lie it on a side on to the base and run right around the rim of the base then reverse and do the top of the base. Both will cover the white paper but the later will create more variation which will help weather the strips. Set aside to dry.

4. Next I have used Army Painter: Strong Tone to seal the paper and paint. You could use 50% water 50% white glue wash again or something like pledge or even just spray it with a varnish.

5. Finally to remove any shine left from the varnish/sealer give the base a quick black wash. Let’s say 80% water to 20% paint; and then you have it the perfect lazy mans 180 degree field of view for Infinity. — in
I would keep doing them to some extent but I didn't make the original image and I've never being able to recreate the angles right since.

6. Some more recent models getting the treatment but now I don't bother with the Army Painter: Strong Tone or glue wash.

For me two colors and a solid line (like the naga in your pic) is the best way to go. It isn't super fancy but it's quick and gets the job done. I prefer also leaving the front black and then the secondary color in the back.

Thanks a lot!
Are there any for 40/55 mm bases? Or is there any manual to make my very own design?
