Guys - first of all: I'm sorry for being so hiperactive here in the topic. You probably cry or puke each time another picture of mine appears as there's plenty of them and in rather rapid succession. For Your knowledge I just use these forum posts as a way of doing breaks. I paint some commissions - then go back to the special project for around half an hour and then take a break to post new pics at the blog, at facebook or here. This way I'm able to restart before getting back to work.

Once it is said - here's another portion of picks.
As I wrote before - I've decided to remake the diorama - something was just very wrong with the last one - I couldn't let it alone.
Image

Claudius - thanks again for the tip with OSL... it helped a lot! Will probably still improve as new pics shown some things that can be done better still.
Image

Diorama as it stands now looks like this:

And at last - after many materials and methods tested - THE THUMBLEWEED!

Hope you like it guys!

Post all progress in own thread and only the final pictures here? We will look anyway.

As I wrote before - I've decided to remake the diorama - something was just very wrong with the last one - I couldn't let it alone.

It was crowded, too small. Now it looks OK.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

I welcome all posts on here! It's great to see your evolution on the model.

Seeing your developments helps me understand more of painting techniques and methodology. Hopefully it also helps other hobbyists. (if you have questions, ask! I'm sure Nazroth would welcome the break to reflect on his techniques)

Also, I think I'd further that glaze as the blue still looks very strong to me (not so much the reflection of light, but as if the armor is glowing, which I don't think is what you want).

Hopefully, some of my own models will come in so I can share my own works.

Alright - here are pictures of my finished Zu Yong. The pictures aren't fantastic, so I'll see about taking better ones later. However, I'll post proof of my completed work now.

See, Nazroth? Plenty of time! You still have a month to go! The OSL looks a lot better toned down. No name on the diorama plaque?

I like those tones on the Zu Yong, H1ghlander! It's almost lavender (or perhaps it is!) at the highest levels, but still manages to come across as a deep purple shade. The yellow/orange eyes gives it a final air of menace. If there's anything that could be improved, I think the weapon could use some sharper and more defined highlights of off-white. Similarly, the servo-muscle could use something to help it pop out more and shine. Overall, the piece looks too dark, though that might be the lighting in the photo.

And to show I'm not slacking!

My Icestorm set has been semi-painted for too long! (I've had the base coat on them all since LAST August)

So, in the spirit of the competition, I painted up the Nisse with a little help from Angel's book.

ImageOperation Icestorm Nisse by Bryant Vichainarong, on Flickr

Please forgive the quality, as I took the photo with a quick snap of my phone and not with my DSLR.

That is the issue I'm having at the moment. Those pictures were taken without flash, but with the flash on, the light is way too stark, and the colours don't look 'true', even though you can see details better...

I'd recommend having some true white light (not flash) and diffuse it. Or you could try diffusing the flash.

Well, the Sekban HRL was done awhile ago, and I have another entry:
Image

(I hope it is visible :?: If not, I'll be doing some adjustments...)

My attempt at Janissary ML conversion (if anyone's curious - that's Ahl Faseed Shotgun body & head with AP Rifle Janissary's arms. The launcher and handgun come from Wargames Factory's accessory pack, though have been cut to fit).
The Janissary's body & Ahl Faseed's arms made me a nice Janissary Shotgunner model which, sadly, falls outside of this particular competition.

That there, there will be pure wine and honey and sugar
Fill up the wine cup and place it in my hand

A month seems pretty much but I just received a large and importatn commission and not from a regular customer but a game producer. There's plenty of stuff queued too so I doubt I will have time to make another piece. The only thing I can do now is just to await and see if this one is enough to buy sufficient number of likes here :) Who knows - maybe this will be my first work to obtain 9.0 at Coolminiornot? I hope so as it took thrice the time as the "Lone Sentry" one. As for the name on the plaque - I'm still learning to write after my right hand was severly broken around nine months ago. I was able to recover pretty fast when it comes to painting (with only minor problems occuring once in a while) but as it comes to writing it is just soooo ugly and irregular. I can help it at this time :)

H1ghlander wrote:That is the issue I'm having at the moment. Those pictures were taken without flash, but with the flash on, the light is way too stark, and the colours don't look 'true', even though you can see details better...

My advice is:
1) Painting: do more lines and edges. The base you've shown till now looks pretty awesome for a grand and effective end result. Just line the edges with some bright colours and do some small dots here and there.
2) Pictures: It is a real pain in the ass when it comes to take a proper picture. I used to take pictures using phone-camera and what I can say is to keep bacground far away from the miniature, so that the camera focuses on the closer miniature properly. Position the light so that it is just a bit over and behind the camera - straight in the line of the shot, so that you minimize shadows and colour steal effect. In the end it is good to throw the picture into photoshop, or other graphic program just to bring colours closer to the original. If You have any source of white light - use it, otherwise use a strong source of yellow light and repair colour damage in a graphic program. That is all I can suggest for the picture.

PS: PM me Your e-mail adress and I can send You a colour-balanced picture of Your miniatuure ;)
Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice. There isn't much edge highlighting as I was trying to be as realistic with shadows as possible. Due to the large shoulder pads and pose of the Zu Yong, only bits of the calf and foot are exposed to zenith lighting (my imagined light source), hence, why there wasn't much on the rest of the mini. However, I am very appreciative of the offer of a colour-balanced picture - I'll PM you right away!

@Claudius - Thanks for the compliment on the highlights. I just added increasing amounts of white to my purple. For the hottest highlights, I went with four layers of highlight, starting with a 'large' highlight, and gradually decreased the area with increased levels of white. It's hard to say precisely, but my initial highlight was probably ~70% purple with ~75% coverage, and my last layer was close to ~30% purple wth 15-25% coverage, depending on the area.
