Eric's crazy projects

by Eric » July 23rd, 2016, 7:38 pm

Hi guys. It's been few years since I painted any miniature but now I decided to get back to it and, most importantly, to start working on an idea I had ever since I discovered Infinity. Beeig a long-time sci-fi modeller obsessed with putting LEDs inside everything and a package arriving today containing dozens of SMD LEDs, here are my first attempts today.

First some blending exercise to get back to it:

Now for those who wonder what SMDs are:

And the first lightning test (drilled holes are huge and nasty, hopefully that gets better with practice, I broke like a dozen of drills today):

You, sir, are clinically insane. I salute you!

I've settled with using fluorescent paints for my glow effects and black lights over the table.
“I'm curious, son. When has 'This might be a trap' ever stopped you?”
“Stopped? Never. Slowed me down while I load the guns? Every time.”

Section9: how is that working out, do you have any photos? I assume you have to dim the lights for the effect to be noticeable

jherazob: man, a huge shout-out to you for an Oglaf profile pic :D

Other person in other forum said they glow a lot with black light, and posted this:

Just had an idea: fluo paint for the surfaces, and LEDs in the base or other "easy" places (maybe in the scenery). After that, what people did for TO and test if lights under the feet manage to light the upper surfaces.

thing is, base is not such an easy place because you need to put a battery and the switch there which are only few mm thick but the base is much thinner. even if you highen it or glue two bases together, there's not much space left for an LED and optic fibre.

anyway, I'm still waiting for some supplies, fiber optics etc, but I made a tiny progress on the cosplay girl. and, most importantly, my FLGS made x-mas come in summer and I got two boxes of the crown piece of my SMD LED project, let's see if you can guess what it is:

First the girl

And now the teaser

I am really thrilled by this sculpt as it's such lightning friendly, big empty space inside, plenty of places to hide the cables and a big base to put the battery in...

I started cleaning up the parts and drilling bigger holes as I managed to break all the smaller drill bits. Metal is pretty thick but still hollow, much better then a full chunk as most of the sculpts are:

Some parts fit together pretty well, like this tail endpiece:

Image

Midpiece's fit a tiny bit more problematic on one side and has a huge gap on the other:

Image

Image

Gaps are pretty visible, so I'd probably require a lot of filling and sanding, but it's necessary to avoid any light leaks

Nose required quite a lot of Dremel work to fit:

Image

And it's still not 100% but much better than it was originally:

Biggest problem appears to be the lower part:

Next step will be drilling the front part for fiber optics (once I get the new drill bits - last time I bought a set of 10 bits each one a different diameter, now I learned it's better to buy a 10-pack of same diameter - 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 mm). Plan is to use three different LED colours - white, green and red. As you can see on this diagram, the nose part will feature green and red lights:
