Textures on the playmat look great, but I'd avoid streets that go directly from one side to another. The OCD in me would prevent me from placing buildings on the street, which would leave a very long open firelane from deployment zone to another. A more asymmetrical layout would be preferred.

True, but the modeller in me sees them riddled with roadblocks, vehicles and other los blocking features

This is what I always think of when I look at that mat just makes it slightly less of an issue for me having these huge fire lanes.

I still not get it. Now you have two corner to corner fire lanes if you don't fill the streets with things. So going from one side to other you must cross them, and both players probably were able to deploy in such a way that they had people shooting from the corners easily.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

Because for some reason I'm not astute enough to explain if you don't have parallel roads to deployment people will without hesitation put terrain on them.

But with the one shown originally no one will put stuff there.

I can't account for the real OCD people around but just for those who are in the general gamer population who seem to be naturally trained to square buildings to deployment edges for some reason.

Different layout schools then, first thing I thought when seeing the roundabout was "not just cars or blockades in streets, now a proper excuse for vehicle jam, or even pile up... and some kind of decor in the center".

Generally, gor my experience, diagonal arrangement of roads and potential firelanes is better for gameplay.

And roads have to be somewhat filled with vehicles, barricades or other stuff anyway. Just as any else kind of terrain.
