Mission: Annihilation. My opponent realized on turn two that he had forgot to draw his classified objectives, so I decided to ditch mine and we continued without them.

Deployment: My opponent won initiative and chose a side of the board with multiple high buildings in the deployment zone (my side was mostly low buildings). I chose to go first. I sat up aggressively as I could since I was expecting serious ARO. My Yaogat Sniper was placed on the tallest platform in my deployment zone with cover(only about 3 inches tall). I kept my Sogarat in reserve to place on the other tall platform (about 5 inches tall), hoping he could survive without cover against the models I was sure my opponent would place on the tall buildings in his deployment zone. I tried to infiltrate my Zerat into a safe position where she could work her way into the enemy lines to look for vulnerable models, but I failed her Infiltration roll and ended up deploying her on my board edge, where she remained for the rest of the game. I rolled an 18 for the Krakot's Metachemistry lv 2. +3 PH and Regeneration. I was actually disappointed.

The Nomad player deployed everything in total cover, with the exception of the Moran which was bizarrely deployed directly in front of my Yaogat and outside of cover ( I never discovered why he did that). The Moira and Grenzer were deployed prone on a rooftop (about 5 inches up). The other high rooftop (about 8 inches high) had a camo marker (which turned out to be the Intruder).

MAF 1st turn: I used the Daturazi and Oznat's Impetuous orders to provide smoke for the Yaogats. The Yaogat Sniper killed the Moran and then re-positioned to spot and kill a Zero. Since no other targets were available for shooting or discovering I decided to run the Krakot right up the center of the board to the base of the building were the Moira and Grenzer were prone. In the process the Krakot took an ARO shot from the Spectre and went down, but was saved by Regeneration. I spent my next two orders on Speculative Fire, killing the Grenzer and wounding the Moira with Grenades. I spent one more order to step around a corner and put Chainrifle templates on the Interventor, Alguacile and Wildcat. The Alguacil and Wildcat died and the Interventor suffered a wound (the Krakot took a Boarding Shotgun shot but made his armor roll). With my final order I moved the Krakot 4 inches and put Chainrilfe templates on the Alguacile FO and Revrend Healer. The Healer survived and shot the Krakot down, but the Alguacile was killed.

Despite complaining about the Metachemistry roll the +3 PH and Regeneration made Speculative Grenade attacks a 50/50 shot and saved the Krakot's life against an unexpected Spectre ARO.

Nomad 1st turn: One of the 6 models that my Krakot had killed was the Nomad lieutenant, so my opponent started in LoL. He spent the Reverend Healer's order activating a Zondbot and successfully healing the Moira. Revealing the Intruder Sniper, he spent an order to split his fire between my Sogarat and Yaogat Sniper. He rolled to crits, and I failed both model's additional Armor rolls against the DA ammo. The Yaogat died and the Sogarat was left unconscious. The Spectre spent his order to re-camo.

MAF turn 2: Since the Intruder had a view of literally the entire board I decided that taking him out was my priority. Unfortunately my only option was my Yaogat. I moved him into position and took a shot with my Panzerfaust. We were both in our +3 range and neither of us had cover, so it was literally my BS 15 shot against his BS 16 shot. I got lucky and won the roll, killing the Intruder. I spent a few orders on Combined Maneuvers to reposition models before spending an order on the Sogarat to successfully Automedikit. The Yaogat spent an order failing to discover the Spectre. The Suryat spent the last order and his Lieutenant order moving up the board into a better position, but took hits from two mines in the process and died.

Nomad turn 2: The Moira revived the Interventor and killed the unconscious Krakot. The Moira took a shot at the Daturazi, but couldn't beat his Dodge roll. The Zero Minelayer tried to shoot the Raktorak, but died to his HFT (the Raktorak survived the shot but died to a mine).

Morat turn 3: The The Daturazi died trying to lay down smoke for the Yaogat, but the Oznat got the job done. The Yaogat spent his last Panzerfaust shot killing the Moira through smoke. The Sogarat gunned down the Spectre despite his TO Camo. With several orders left the Oznat was in a prime position to charge into the enemy deployment zone and kill both the Reverend Healer and Interventor (the only two models left) but my opponent decided to concede.

Victory Morats!

Thoughts for this game: I wanted to continue to try out the Yaogat Sniper in small links. I've been very disappointed with the model in the past, and this game didn't really change my mind. He killed two easy targets, but either of the other Yaogats would have done a better job considering the targets were within 16 inches. So I remain unimpressed by the model. The Combi/Panzer Yaogat continues to be a star. I wanted to try out the Hacker, but he did absolutely nothing all game. To be fair, there was really nothing for him to do.

The Krakot is still new to me, so I really wanted to give him a workout. This is also the first time I've actually remembered to roll for Metachemistry, and it probably ended up winning me the game. Surviving the Spectre's attack thanks to Regeneration and being able to land 2 Speculative grenade hits on the Moira and the Grenzer thanks to +3 PH was very lucky. Chainrifling the enemy back line was less about luck and more about taking advantage of poor deployment, but I'm still amazed that this model was able to mow down 6 enemy models in a single turn.

the Yaogat's against-the-odds Panzerfaust attack on the Intruder was even luckier, considering that he was at a small disadvantage. If he hadn't been able to put the Intruder down I would have had to try to engage him with my Suryat, and while the Suryat has better BS and a HMG, I would have had to walk through at least one order worth of sniper fire and two mines to get into his +3 range, and the Intruder would have had cover at that angle. And if I hadn't put that Intruder down he would have locked me down entirely, since there was't anyway to move on the board at all without provoking his ARO. As I said, I was pretty lucky.

I've been trying to decide if solo Oznats are worthwhile. For the most part I think Daturazi are obviously better, and the Oznat didn't do anything in this game to suggest otherwise. However, if my opponent hadn't conceded the Oznat's 6-4 MOV would have allowed me to spend my last 4 orders to get her into his deployment zone to try to kill the Healer and Interventor. A Daturazi would have come up a little short, movement wise.

I've also been trying to determine if solo Raktoraks make viable specialists, but this game didn't really give me a chance to test that out.

If I take a solo Sogarat it's usually armed with an HMG, but I wanted to see how a Feurbach Sogarat would do as a potential backup for the Suryat. Really, he didn't get much done at all. His gun just wasn't a deterrent in ARO, and he had trouble hitting in the active turn. When you're facing Intruders, Zeros, Moiras and Spectres (all in cover) BS 13 just doesn't get the job done. Next time I'll take a much cheaper 2nd Suryat. I was very happy that the Sogarat made his Automedikit roll. That almost never happens when I take the unit. I wasn't happy to see that both the Sogarat and the Suryat failed all their Armor rolls. In fact, the Krakot's one Armor roll was the only one I made all game. But that's pretty normal for my Morat games.

Mission: Firefight: My classified objectives were both related to the HVT (make a successful Engineering roll in base to base contact, make a successful Doctor roll in base to base contact)

Deployment: I won initiative and decided to set up on the board edge with two relatively high buildings, hoping for a good vantage point for my Sogarat. My opponent decided to go second. I deployed my Sogarat on a high point in the middle of my DZ, and my Yaogat sniper on a low building to the left. The rest of the Yoagat team was deployed at the base of the building where they could easily move forward. The Daturazi and Oznat were both placed nearby to provide smoke and move up the left flank. The Suryat was placed in a spot on the right that would allow him to advance on a path toward the enemy with ample cover but also long fire lanes. The Krakot was placed on the far right flank, where his 6-4 MOV and Superjump would hopefully be useful. The Medtech and Gaki stayed in the center. My Zerat infiltrated near one of the Panoplys on the right side of the board.

The Nomad player deployed conservatively, keeping most models in total cover in his deployment zone, with no visible threats. His Moran hid out in a building in the middle of the board, with the Krazy Koalas deployed outside. He deployed two camo markers near the same building (one on top next to the central Panoply, one near the rear of the building) and a third camo marker near the right Panoply behind a large shipping container.

MAF 1st turn: Impetuous orders first. The Daturazi threw down smoke in between the Yaogats and the camo marker on the roof of the building in the center. The Oznat moved toward the center of the board where the Moran hid. The Krakot also moved in that direction. The Gaki climbed right up the wall of the central building trying to get to his target, ending up just inches away from the central Panoply and the camo token which I now was pretty sure was a zero. I spent the Gaki's impetuous order to move him a little closer to the camo marker, provoking both of the Moran's Koalas. I was hoping that the Koalas would kill the Gaki, and that the Zero would be caught in the explosion. The Zero did respond to the Gaki's Move with a Dodge, but the Gaki's own Dodge allowed him to survive the Koalas. My first regular order was spent on the Yaogat Sniper, who killed the Zero through the Daturazi's smoke. With the Koalas out of the way, my Zerat was free to tap the Panoply and pick up a Panzerfaust. She then participated in a combined maneuver with the Suryat, Sogarat and Krakot, moving around the corner of the shipping container in the hope of flushing out what I suspected was a second Zero. The Zero ARO'd with a shot on the Krakot, killing him, but then died to the Zerat's boarding Shotgun. Another two order put the Zerat at the corner of a building just outside of the enemy DZ, facing off against a Jaguar. A Zondbot and Moira were lined up behind the Jaguar, but both were facing away from the Zerat. The Zerat's won the face to face rolls, killing the Jaguar and Zondbot and wounding the Moira. My last orders were spent having the Yaogats move forward to discover and shoot a mine and on a coordinated order that advanced the Suryat, Medtech, Daturazi and Oznat up the board. The Daturazi hit the left Panoply and picked up a Adhesive Launcher.

Nomad 1st turn: The Nomad player started off by losing both Assault Pistol Morlocks to Sogarat and Yoagat AROs. The Chainrifle Morlock managed to kill the Oznat. The Tyskolon took Spitfire shots at the Sogarat, but was disabled by a lucky Feurbach crit. The Clockmaker spent an order and a Command Token to fix up the Tyskolon through a Zondbot, but when the Tyskolon tried to shoot the Sogarat again it suffered a second crit. Giving up n the drone for the moment, my opponent moved his Moran hidden inside the central building to a door where he could fire on my Zerat. The Zerat died, but the action provoked a Dodge from the Gaki on top of the roof, who survived the short fall to the ground directly in front of the door. My opponent switched tactics, using the Moran's Repeater to attempt a hacking attack on the nearby Suryat with the Interventor. The Suryat managed to fend off two consecutive Gotcha! attacks before finally passing a WIL roll to fail a Guts check to move out of range. The Interventor then turned it's attention on the Suryat, immobilizing it before attacking with the Tyskolon for the third time and wounding the Sogarat twice. My opponent spent his last order having the Moran shoot the Gaki, who failed to Dodge and didn't get to explode due to being wounded twice.

MAF turn 2: My Daturazi used his impetuous order to advance toward the enemy. My Medtech moved to access the right Panoply, picking up Mimetism, before moving toward the Krakot. Unfortunately his attempt to Doctor the Krakot failed. The Medtech then moved in base to base contact with my opponent's HVT and was able to complete both objectives. Unfortunately, the Moran shot him dead. The Suryat moved up the right side of the board, taking out the Chimera before going into Suppression Fire behind cover in the back corner of my opponent's DZ. With my final order I activated my Sogarat's Automedikit to revive the model.

Nomad turn 2: The Chainrifle Morlock died to Yaogat ARO. The Interventor managed to Immobalize the Sogarat through the Moran's repeater again. The Tyskolon advanced on the Suryat and fired with it's Spitfire. I thought the odds would be in my favor, since the Tyskolon was firing B 4 at BS 9 (due to cover and SF) and my Suryat was firing B3 at 13 and had cover. I managed to roll a 7 and 11, but my opponent rolled four 9's. Four crits. So the Suryat went down.

Morat turn 3: With the surprising loss of the Suryat I was left with only the three Yaogats and the Suryat. Unfortunately, the Sogarat was stuck on top of a building with no line of site to anything and within ZOC of a repeater. I had already claimed multiple Panoply's and secured both my Classified Missions, so I knew I had 3 points secure. But my opponent had killed my Lt and I wasn't sure if I was killed more points worth of enemies in total. I decided to make one of the Yaogats with Combi rifles my Lt, and spent two orders moving the link closer to the middle of the board. The Lt fired on the Tyskolon, finally destroying it. I broke the link to have the Lt spend his order to come around the corner of the central building and shoot at the Moran. Both models survived the action.

Nomad turn 3: My opponent had a short 3rd turn. Unable to complete his classified missions or secure any Panoply's, he focused on killing my Yaogats. His Lunokhod put down the other Combi Yaogat, but he was unable to kill anything else with his remaining orders.

Victory Morats! My Classified's and secured panoply's gave me 3 victory points, while his Lieutenant kill gave him 2. We added up our remaining points and discovered that I had killed about 20 more points then he had, securing me an extra 4 points and the win.

Thoughts for this game: Crits were a huge part of this game, drastically swinging the direction of the game multiple times. Without those crits, I couldn't really guess who would have won.

My list this time was very similar to the one I took last week, substituting the Raktorak for the Medtech and picking up a Gaki. The Medtech didn't manage to heal the Krakot unfortunately, but his speed allowed him to move up the board fast and secure the Panoply and both Classified Objectives. I think he was more useful than the Raktorak would have been in the same situation.

The Zerat was the star of the show on my side of the board, securing a Panoply and taking out 4 enemy models. But the odds were in her favor with each attack and she was well positioned to use her shotgun. By the time she died she had already run out of easy targets, and I don't think she would have been able to engage the Chimera or Tyskolon (the two closest units) and survive. Like any skirmisher, a well placed Zerat can do wonders. But she still feels very barebones and vulnerable to me.

The Krakot, Oznat and Daturazi all died without doing anything of note. The Gaki did his job and ate some Krazy Koalas before dying.

For the last two games I've tried to place the Sogarat on a high platform to use as a kind of mid range sniper. It worked in this game in the sense that he was able to kill a Morlock and lock down the central fire lane, but just like last game he was an easy target. he got lucky and was able to fend the Lunhkod off twice with crits, but once he did get hit his armor didn't save him (just like last game), and he ended up being very vulnerable to hacking. It was nice to see his Automedikit work again, and in the end just having him alive won me the game. But i just haven't been impressed with his armor or ability to win face to face rolls.

I fully expected the Suryat to survive his encounter with the Lunhakod, and maybe even win it. If he had survived, I have no doubt he would have swept through my opponant's backline and taken out both drones, the Grenzer and the Clockmaker (the Interventor was hidden in a building and out of reach). Losing him to 4 crits stung a lot, but it also seemed fair after my earlier pair of crits on the Lunhkod. The Sogarat did his job well, advancing to take down the Chimera.

The Yaogats didn't see much action this game and mostly served as an ARO threat. the Sniper scored a pair of kills, but juts like last game the Combi Yaogats could have done the job better considering both kills happened at less than 16 inches. I feel like this list desperately needs long range fire power, but against and again the Yaogat Sniper just doesn't do anything of note.

Re: Jake's Morat battle reports

by jake » July 17th, 2016, 7:14 am

Sick for two weeks in a row, but finally got a game this week.

7-14-16
MAF vs Alep
300 points

MAF Combat Group 1
Sogarat HMG Lt
Sogarat Feurbach
Yaogat Multi Sniper
Daturazi Combi Rifle/DA CCW
Oznat Vulkan Shotgun
Gaki x2
Krakot Chainrifles x2 and Grenades
Zerat FO
Medtech

Combat Group 2:
Raktorak Vulkan Shotgun
Vanguard Hacker

Aleph
Deva Lieutenant
Deva MSV2 Spitfire
Zayin
Lamedh x 2
Naga FO x 2
Proxy Mk2 MSR
Proxy Mk4 HRL
Proxy Mk 1 Engineer
Dakini Paramedic x 2
Dactyl Doctor
Yudbots x 2
Netrod?
Some other stuff?

Mission: Firefight. My classified objectives were Telemetry and HVT: Designation. Luckily I had both a FO and a Hacker in my list.

Deployment: I won initiative and decided to go first. I sat up to strike hard on my first turn, since Aleph is usually a poor match for me. I deployed my Sogarats on opposite sides of the board where they could march through the scenery toward the panoplies and the enemy lines. The Hungries team was put in the back left where it would be protected and could use its speed to run up a flank and hopefully engage surprised enemies. The Zerat and Krakot were deployed forward left in front of the Fuerbach Sogarat, and the rest of my models were clustered around the HMG Sogarat. I held the Yaogat Sniper in reserve since I was expecting both enemy snipers and TR remotes. I ended up placing him on a nice raised spot in the center of my deployment zone, near a Daturazi that could provide cover.

The Aleph player deployed with his TR remote, Spitfire/MSV2 Devy and HRL Proxy in cover but providing ARO threats. Most of the rest of his army was behind what he thought was total cover. He later discovered thata good number of these models were very visible to my sniper.

MAF 1st turn: My first Impetuous order saw the Krakot die to the TO bot. I didn't feel like I could afford to spend an order to hold him back and unfortunately his Metachemistry roll of 6-4 MOV put him in the enemy LOF. My second Impetuous order saw my Daturazi throw smoke in front of the Yaogat. Regular Orders began with the Yaogat, who spent a single order disabling the TR remote and then 3 more trying to destroying it (since a Proxy engineer was sitting prone right next to it). With my 5th order the Yoagat killed the Deva Spitfire and with my sixth put the Proxy HRL into Unconscious. I spent two coordinated orders in a row moving the Sogarats, Daturazi and Zerat and trying to discover the camo tokens that I assumed were Naga. They failed both Discover rolls. At this point I realized that my Yaogat had LoF on the Dactyl and Deva hiding behind the low hill in the back of the enemy DZ. I spent an order to kill the Deva (which I had rightly assumed was the Lieutenant), but the Dactlyl was able to go prone. My final orders were spent moving a Hungry forward to try to discover the Naga on the left flank (it failed) and putting my Sogarat HMG in Supressive Fire.

Aleph 1st turn: My opponent revealed that I had killed his Lieutenant. His first order spent was from his hidden TO Proxy sniper, killing my Yoagat sniper. A second order was spent to Doctor the Proxy HRL through a Yudbot. I killed the Yudbot but wasn't able to prevent the successful Doctor roll. My opponent spent orders on both a Dakini and a Lamedh to try to wound my Sogarat HMG, but the Sogarat disabled both. My opponent attempted the same with a Naga, but both the Naga and Sogarat survived unharmed. The Naga on the other side of the table killed the Zerat, but died to the Sogarat's Fuerbach in the process.

My opponent decided to concede at the end of his turn.

Victory Morats? I won the game by concession, but was also clearly ahead on points. I don't believe that my opponent's situation was as dire as he thought it was, but I do understand his frustration at losing several models in a row at the beginning of the game. If it were me I would have kept playing. My opponent had lost 7 of his 17 models, but I had lost 3 of my 12. It would have been an uphill battle, but he still had a Doctor alive and in a good place to heal several models, plus a TO sniper overwatching the entire board who I no longer had a good answer to.

Thoughts for this game: I positioned myself to strike as hard as I could in my first turn, knowing that I had to take out the TO bot and the Engineer and Doctor, and the Lt. if I could guess right (and I did). I never got to take a shot at the Doctor, and i think that could have resulted in my losing the game since the Doctor was in a prime spot to revive several models.

My list this time was very similar to the one I took last week, although this time I left the other two Yaogat at home and opted for a Hungries link instead and upgraded the Suryat to a Sogarat. I don't think either addition made any difference in this game, since the Surayt and Sogarat's killing potential are identical and I rolled a 20 on the one ARM roll the Sogarat was required to make.

The Yaogat sniper did virtually all of the heavy lifting in this game, and I think this is only the 2nd time in all the games I've ever taken him in over the years that he's did anything notable. His success had everything to do with my opponent's very poor deployment and little to do with his own capabilities, although keeping him in reserve helped a lot. Although the Yaogat was able to make use of the Daturazi's smoke, a Zerat would have done almost as well in this situation, engaging the TR bot at BS11 vs BS2, and the MSV2 Deva at BS11 vs BS3.

This is the 3rd game in a row where the Sogarat didn't really do anything, but my plan had been to push both forward into enemy territory and kill what I could. Again, I really wish this unit had Duo, or could form a Haris without Kornak (so I could just take 2 Sogarat in a link as if they were a Duo).
