Scorch's Miniatures

by Scorch » November 7th, 2013, 4:18 pm

So, finally managed to take some pictures of some of my miniatures. :D
I'll put them up here! If you guys have some advice on the paintjobs, let me know ;) Always room for improvement, right?! I know these photos aren't the best, but I had to make them without much light. Hopefully I'll find a solution in the future.

I think the models look great  and I really like how colorfull they turned out! I was afraid that they might get al smudgy darky like Warhammer seems to get painted quite alot.
For specs; I use Vallejo Game Color and some Citadel washes. The khaki-colors are Citadel as well. They are primed with Army Painter White Primer and finished with varnish from the same range.

I'll be putting up more of these in the future (just ordered a big amount of new models) and if you want some more pictures/information you can visit my blog as well, which at the moment is brand new so it doesn't have a lot of content. YET. ;)

Thanks ^^ Have to touch them up a little bit though. Give some of them a little more shading.
And yes, them's a lot of factions.. If I had the money I'd collect them all at the same time :toot:

Thanks! ;) And yeah, I'm planning to keep the good work up! Ordered a large amout of units (around 40) last week, so I'll be painting a lot when I'm not studying. ^^ More practice hones better skills! I'll keep posting new units from these new ones when they are done! ;)

Frack, I think I have 20 nekkid Hassassins to paint, another 20 nekkid Nomads, and I don't even want to think about how many YJ minis to paint!

Yeah guys! 40 units! ^^ Haha! I'll have something to do during the cold dark months and the coming Christmas holiday aside from the fun, warm and fuzzy family-related diners and gift-giving. =) Looking forward to it!

Long time no see. College, moving to another city, setting up Data Sphere blog and all the trouble with the non-closing of the forum took a chunk of my time. :) Not going to bore you with details! Icestorm models incoming!
Image
WIP Alguaciles. I really like how the black skin turned out. I was really afraid to get too much of a 'blackface' effect. He turned out pretty naturalistic, and I'm happy about it! His hair and facial features really struck me as an African person.
Image
WIP :nomad: The Brigada is almost finished, as is the black Alguacil. WIP on the other one.
Image
Just one last before it got too dark here. I finished some of the details on the WIP Alguaciles.. and look, the ORC and WIP Fusilier showed up as well!

Better pictures will follow.. (Iphone cameras *sigh*)

Lookin' good!

The way you painted the black alguacile's skin gave me a revelation on what I've been doing wrong when I try to paint black skin. I wasn't including orange in the palette!
Thanks!

I used beasty brown and black (1:1) and watered it down a bit.. but found out it was terrible and really a dirty non-realistic colour for skin, but it was great for the hair and beard. So I went over it with beasty brown and took the GW black and brown washes to apply some more shadow and darker effects to it. After that I mixed some of the 1:1 black/brown that was still wet with more brown, to add some shade to eyebrows, eyes and cheeks.
After that I applied black/brown wash to the hair to bring out the dread-effects.

Okay, because of popular demand:

Scorch's PanO Blue

Undercoat: Vallejo GC
1 Cold Grey : 1 Imperial Blue
Image
Wash: Citadel Washes
Nuln Oil
gives the blue a darker, dirtier look, also brings the deeper sections out and adds to the less flat look of the model
Basecoat: Vallejo GC
2 Steel Grey : 1 Magic Blue
Magic Blue tones down the pretty purple vibe of Steel Grey (It's pretty Lila otherwise)
Image
Highlight: Vallejo GC
Still haven't decided on the last highlight to bring that finishing touch on the models. I'll upload the recipe after I'm finished with on of the models! :D

Models look great and so does the airbrushing bro!

Your OIS minis are gonna look great once you get them done. One addition to your pan o color scheme I would suggest. as a last step on the blue take a really dark purple. 3 drops purple, 1 drop black, 12-15 drops water. Only apply this to the cracks and darkest points. The mixture is so diluted you will notice that you really only see it in the cracks or deepest recesses. Repeat the process as many times as you like for the desire effect.

You can do the same formula and process for the nomad red armor using a dark green and black.

You would be shocked of how easy it is and what a difference it can make in depth of color.

I might try that out. Since it is my first wargame ever I'm still playing it safe. Sounds like you make a kind of wash, am I right? I'll look into it. As long as all the colours remain bright! ;) I like that about Infinity.
Could you maybe post a picture of the effect?

I am already a bit ahead on my models, but haven't posted any pictures of them. I broke some arms of the Alguaciles during the rebasing of the models on Customeeple's Giraldez bases. So I'll have to retouch some things first. Let's hope the Fusilliers and the entire NCA and Nomad forces will go easier and with less breaking. :cop:

Yes you are correct. It is absolutely a wash.
Ok in the pic below ignore the models just look at the dark purple shading on the gray part of their bases. I use a very similar mixture to you on that so the effect would be the same.

Since last time I posted minis I've bought an airbrush. And I've been using it to paint lots and lots of terrain. :) It needed to be done.

WIP:
Image
Bit of OCD picture. All nicely arranged. Terrakami's containers and boxes are great and affordable scatter terrain. These units will look awesome when you mix them up on the table to create some cover in more open spaces. Love it!

And this evening, I've tested my airbrush on some minis. That was pretty scary at first, as I was afraid to mess it up. But, stuff went smooth.

My NCA force has been in the closet since the starter came out. I bought the Bolts and couple of blisters + the Assault/Support Remotes of PanO in the meantime, but due to private stuff, I couldn't get them started.
Now I did! ^^ and I'm updating some units I already finished to my new PanO colour scheme (up in this thread).
Image

Image

Pretty neat. Please note that the Fusiliers in the front (from O:I) have the same hue of blue, so the bright blue will dumb down a bit when I've added all the details and highlights to the models.

I am very pleased with the results of my first model airbrush attempt ever. :) And it went so fast! I've done this work within two hours, while I'd have been working on them with a brush for months. Love it! :)
