Moderator Applications

Hello all,

As some of you may have noticed, we had a particularly nasty set of Spammers attack recently.

As such, I've decided that we need to step up our moderation efforts. To do this, we're going to need some reinforcements.

Here's how it works:
  1. Reply to this post with your explicit intent to apply for moderator status with your time zone and general availability.
  2. Upon my (or another staff member's) viewing of your post, your name will be presented to the other staffers for review.
  3. This review will last 72 hours and will require either a staffer's or five different established forumites' backing in order to be strongly considered.
  4. Upon strong consideration, I will PM the applicant and clear up a few things and make sure that everyone is on the same page.
  5. Assuming everything is good at this point, we'll have a new moderator.

Of course, there are some base requirements:
  1. At least 10 verified posts

These requirements are subject to change at any time and without notice.
These requirements are, as well, not retroactive.

If you have any input or comments, please feel free to reply below. These regulations and guidelines aren't as well thought out as our normal stuff due to the emergent nature of the current situation.

Oh, FB. Always the small print.

Is that a problem? I'm open to changing that, actually.

Our current moderators don't really utilize it, though I was thinking it would be a good change.

Hi Claudius,

I'm not 100% clear on the actual duties involved - it's it essentially monitoring to catch spam as it happens (and shut it down), or something else?

Yes, that'd be the primary role. In this capacity, you'd basically be in the lookout for post that require approval and approve posts that aren't spam whole disallowing posts that are and notifying an admin with the poster's name so that user can be deleted.

I'd be willing to do the work, but I think I'm short of the 10 post requirement.

Ironically, not anymore. That was your 10th post.

Oh, cool. Alright, well then this is my explicit intent to apply as a moderator. I'm Eastern Standard Time, and my availability is pretty much open except for Wednesday till about 5, and Tuesday evening. Other days I'm only in class for an hour or two at a time and am usually home for the rest of it. Full disclosure, I lack a smartphone or any regular access to one unless my fiance is nearby.

On a side-note, I agree with Mob of Blondes about the FB thing.

Sounds good. I'll go ahead and remove the bit about FB. I can understand not everyone wanting to be on board about that, now that I've slept.
