Okay...everyone that is everyone seems to be doing a table diary....I hate to be left out.

So here is the teaser picture.....

Image

There are lots more pictures coming.

1.) I work lots of hours at a real job.
2.) When I paint I drink.
3.) You get what you get. Enjoy if you want....
4.) I painted the Zuzzy mat
5.) I painted the "sidewalks" so what you see has buildings that are going on them

Crushar what's the overall plan for the table in regards to playability and density?

Is it just going to consist of Warsen.al products?

How do you find the quality of what you have made so far?

HDF or MDF partially cut or fully cut?

How does it take to painting and what method are you using?

With your building shot you have there have you left it partially unpainted or have you manage to colour match the base material colour?

Don't mind all the questions these are just what comes to mind when I look at build logs. I tend to go into too much detail but here I'm seeing the extreme opposite with little information to gauge what you're looking to accomplish.

Vis- Excellent questions sir! I tend to just throw things out into the world with neither care nor concern, but you have some really good questions...

What I am looking at is trying to replicate a "city center" or something. I will be trying to make every building individually painted (but they are all Warsenal), meaning that I will try to give the board lots of color by painting the buildings each differently. There may also be a train running through the city center as well...

As for the buildings themselves I have found that when painting MDF terrain that if I use Testers Model Master paint that it not only provides a nice base coat but also a really awesome color that makes painting half way done for me.

(Example of the paint I use)

As for the buildings themselves they are wonderful but they also have some issues.
1.) They are large buildings with no windows on the sides.
2.) The one story buildings have only one door included.

I will be addressing those problems soon enough. Love the product but they are not as "Infinity friendly" as I would like.
I will be cutting windows into the side walls.

Here is an example of what I am talking about:
Image

Now each window on the two story houses comes with these little plastic frames. I will sacrifice to make windows on the sides of these buildings.

Now onto the painting. I am using an airbrush for 90% of the painting on these, once the testors is on, these things are taking paint wonderfully. I really am enjoying painting them actually.

The doors I will have either buy from Warsenal (so there is a door at each end of the building) or I will have to hack them up with a saw. Not sure which I will do yet.

More to come.....

I can certainly see your issue with how those buildings will play without windows. I understand why they were designed that way given they are meant to interlock over and over with the opposite version of the trapezoid and while that is all well and good if you make a series of buildings or bring them right back around it leaves you right up shits creek without a paddle if you're using them like you are.

Cutting the new windows will be a bit of a trial though if you haven't build all of the buildings already I would strongly suggest you cut them windows before assembling that particular layer (sheet of MDF) its going to be situated in. That way you can easily mark and cut using a good knife/cutting tool and a straight edge you can actually brace onto the sheet to keep it flush and flat while cutting.

Another option is to forgo straight line windows and use a hole saw for ease of cutting and opening new areas. Although it is really different to the rest of the aesthetics of the building.

Anyway interested to see where this build takes you and especially looking forward to seeing the train!

Yea....actually these buildings were put together about a year ago at a terrain making party I had at the house.

While I fully endorse these events perhaps that much alcohol should be limited.....or I should have been more vigilant in watching some newer terrain makers...either way...buildings are already made. So I just have to deal with it. I will have to cut the windows into the buildings while the buildings are put together, and even painted as I am tired of seeing them in the unpainted state. I have a nice dremel tool that works pretty good. Here is a test piece on the windows...

Here is a bit of an update on the table so far...

Oh and I seemed to have gotten sidetracked these weekend at some point as well....these were on the table for a long time. Now they aren't. My table seems empty without them...

I'll have what Crushar is drinking, please :)

Everything looks pretty good.

My one though on long straight walls is that they need scatter up against them. It looks like you have that into account though. A soda machine or something I see?

Instead of a hole saw, which is much too rough for MDF, use a Forstner bit.

The problem with a hole saw and the Forstner bit is that it is for a circular hole. I don't want to make portholes in these buildings...I want windows that gamewise players can actually enter the building through. Thus making them much more playable. Plus I need to make them pleasing to the eye. So just cutting a hole in the building does not appeal to me...not at this point anyway....

Also here is what the train looks like at this time...

Already put together?! They're so tight fitting!

...

What do you mean you punch the pieces out?

...

Shit.

You cut the hole, then square it with a rasp, or file. It is a fairly quick and easy way to do things. Cut two holes side by side, square off and you have a rectangle. Using a dremel or roto-zip on MDF has always been problematic for me. But I have a bias against nasty rotary devices.

If you have a nice sharp chisel ( say a 1/4") and a mallet you can use that to square off the holes. This way works, and quickly too. I'd practice on scrap first, to get the hang of it, if you've never done this sort of thing before.

Ages ago I was in a building that had circular windows. You could get out through them, they were big. They rotated along the middle, top to bottom axis.

Like the big one on the right.

Bigger, but probably worse insulation.

Some even go totally insane about circles:
