Data-Sphere Painting Campaign!
Summer '15 Season

The goal of this campaign is to paint our models and show off our progress in an attempt to keep a steady and sustainable pace of painting.
Participants (and observers) are encouraged to share Work In Progress (WIP) pictures and divulge their techniques and recipes for their works.
High amounts of detail and creativity are encouraged, but not required for participation.

To enter:
  1. Post in the season's thread with your entry. Both an unpainted (with a timestamp) and finished picture of the entry.

The theme of this season is: Specialists!

Requirements:
  1. Must have the Doctor, Hacker, Engineer, Forward Observer, Specialist troop, or Chain of Command special skill(s). Sorry, no medics allowed.

That's it! Remember that models not specifically specialists (such as Keisotsu and Kamael) are specialists as long as their weapons are the same. Please keep that in mind. Though, we already had a campaign on light infantry, so perhaps try to submit something different?

In the case of a partial profile that qualifies, all models of that profile must be submitted. Profiles such as the Scarface and Cordelia of Mercenaries will require both the "specialist" profile model and the "non-specialist" profile model (such as Scarface's TAG).

They carry ITS games on their backs and pull us out of the fire. Let's get ITS ready and paint up some specialists!

That's it!

At the end of each Season (this one ending on August 31st at 23:59:59 UTC), no more submissions will be accepted and the season's submissions will be compiled together. The following month, poll thread(s) will allow users to vote for which models they most like! There is no strict criteria on what you are casting your vote for! What this means is that users can vote on the "Most Improved", "Best Painted", "Most Interesting", "Most Ambitious", "Most Helpful", "Most Friendly", "Most Involved", "Most Funny", etc.! This form of voting doesn't prevent amateur or new painters from taking part. I know I'll always be voting for those that try their hardest. You'll also have multiple votes, so no worrying about which entries to pick! Votes are changeable at any time during the voting month. Voting for this first season will end on September 30th at 23:59:59 UTC.

To vote:
  1. View the appropriate thread for the month that you wish to vote for.
  2. View ALL entries for that month in the provided Imgur album (that will be accessible in the top post).
  3. Select your vote(s) from the Poll in the thread.

You're done!

Note: it's possible that the number of entries will require multiple poll threads. In this case, please view all threads.

Prizes!
But wait! There's more!

For each season, there will be 3 winners that will be featured.
Second and Third places will receive commemorative patches and feature in a blog post.
First place will receive the same prizes as Second and Third, as well as some Vallejo paints to reward their artistry.

Note to previous season winners: we're still working out the kinks on prize support and how to handle distribution. Sorry for the wait. We appreciate your understanding.

Best of luck!

If you have any questions, post 'em below and I'll respond in the thread.

Is no one interested in participating this season? Everyone all tuckered out? :(

I'm interested, but still trying to decide on a miniature. I think, what might keep people from joining in, is the pending decision on the last competition. I guess, all are waiting for some closure - at least that's what I think. :)

Anyways, I'm always up for some good ol' painting fun - once I've decided, I'll join. Hopefully this will be by the end of the week. :)

I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting... and in the meantime managed to fully paint 3 specialist models, and start another 2 beyond the point where they qualify for entry. Plus it is really hot here these days (at least on afternoons) so the paints don't like it and dry up far too quickly on a palette. So I'm not going to be starting any new specialists anytime soon...

I'm interested - I have some ZuYong FOs that I intend to enter. However, I need to wait for their rifles and base toppers to arrive...

My entry will be Yuriko Oda (trust her, she's an engineer ;)) but as Errhile said- it's too hot for my paints (primer dries third day since I undercoated the models :? ). I hope to upload some photos tommorow.

Use a wet palette. If that dries too, use a bigger reservoir.

Trust me, wet palettes didn't help much this weekend. Germany was seekng somewhat close to 40 degrees celsius, with private homes not being equipped with ACs.

My wet palette wasn't helping because the paint would dry too fast on your brush tip, making proper painting and especially blending nigh impossible.

Temperatures have gone down by now, so painting can commence.

I am very interested but at the moment all of my specialist figs are already painted...
So I need to wait for my LGS to get enough people odering to make their own order.

And I feel the heat-problemo...
Todays the first day that looks like it won't be too hot... guess who has to go to work today ;)
So, I will be joining in, it's just that the figs still need to arrive.

Alright, there she is. Keisotsu Gui Feng Yuriko Oda.

My army needs speed painting (I will join tournament next weekend and I need painted army), so there will not be any fireworks- just simple TT.

I have some commisions with a strict deadline, so I'm still debating with myself if I can make it or not.
I think it will be a Guilang FO if I enter.

Looks good! Good luck and have fun with the campaign!

I hate deadlines so much. Whenever I take commissions, it's with the explicit understanding that I don't do deadlines. That said, the campaign ends at the end of August, so you have plenty of time.

So good to have that, I've switched to "I'll paint them someday, when I paint them" and it's far less stressful XD

Yes, I should do no deadlines as well, but this is for a company so they need them for their shows, starting in Spiel, Essen this year :)
Anyway, I should find a gap in my timeschedule.... I just need to ;)

Indeed (looks sadly at his Nomads, Haqq, Space Marines and Sisters of Battle, Dwarfs, Wolsung gang and band for Malifaux ;)).

She's a Doctor, which counts as Specialist under ITS 2015 rules.
Therefore, she does count, I guess.

Correct. She has a doctor profile with those weapons, so she's in.

Alright the, the girl is finished. As I said- nothing special, just simple tabletop. She took me about 5 hours (+almost three days the primer dries :? ).

I do not like the "original" colour scheme of JSA (OK, I like it but NOT on JSA) and I wanted an orange colour on one of my armies. It doesn't look good on Haqq, ALEPH has other scheme and Nomads in orange look OK, but in my gaming community there are other guy with orange Nomads. And FRRM in orange sucks, so I've decided to us it on my freshly bought JSA. I think it looks fine.

I'm really really prud of her face. I always have problems with painting faces- if on eye is good, the other is sooooooooo big that it looks freaky. And almost all models that I've painted have lazy eyes :?(maybe that's why they can't hit anything with their combirifles  ). But Yuriko is my best painted model ever.

I hope you enjoy her.

I might throw in an 112 Emergency Service model later (After Comic-Con)

I'm thinking of painting him West Coast Firefighter style to go with the theme of USAriadna.

Okay, so here we go again, eh? I'm gonna join with Machaon, who will serve as my PanO Trauma-Doc. Here's the before pic:

Alright, time to post pictures.

Because I'm still waiting for stuff to arrive via water and air, my progress may be slow, but I hope to have everything (or, at least one) finished for the deadline. My submission will be part paint, part conversion.

My three ZuYong, ready to swap in their HMGs for the ability to see better:
Image

Rather than try to do a weapon swap, I'm going to modify the HMG to look more like a combo-rifle. The plan will be to cut away most of the barrel and top rail, put in a new barrel, and then create a new top and bottom rail (apply green stuff as required). I will post pictures as I make progress with my conversions and painting.

I would've liked to have seen more progress pictures, but that's fine. If you could, could you get me pictures that only show your submitted specialists? Thank you.

Ambitious. I like it! If you wanted it to look more like a combi-rifle, you should consider trimming down the magazine, as well.

Go with rigid epoxies, easier to sand down to mechanical shapes. You could too reuse the metal tabs for this task, if you cut them. :thoughtful:

@Claudius: I intend to handle it like the last time - progress pictures here, as well as comments and critique, and a series of articles on my blog about it. Was a lot of fun the last time, so why change a running system? :)

In my defense, I did the majority of the work on the batch of minis these guys were a part of in a day, so not much time for WIP shots ;)
But here are some individual pics of De Fersen & the Dozer. If I go back and add any more detail to'em before the deadline I'll post those as well, but for the tabletop I'm happy with these guys :)

You can do a whole lot more with these, mate. I mean, there's so much time left, why not work on it some more? :)

Also, try to change the lighting on the pics, it's pretty hard to see any details. From what I can see on your current pictures, the light is coming from somewhere up behind the minis. Change your lightsource, so the light comes from the front and top. That way we can get a better look at them - which is what you'll want for the voting in the end. Also take the picture in front of a neutral background (grey or white piece of paper) with only one mini visible. You'll notice the difference. :)

Another handy trick I use is to hold or rest a sheet of frosted paper between the light and the mini, something like tracing paper I guess. I tend to prop a piece in an arc over the mini and it has a similar diffusing effect to a light tent but way cheaper and easier to set up :)
